The Second Son of The Marquis Runs Away from Home ~ Lacking Talent, He Abandons Everything and Becomes an Adventurer ~ - 97
Chapter 97: The Land Overrun by Magical Beasts
“Aria, I’ll handle the left!”
“Understood!”
Half a day after departing, we entered the Brayja territory and were immediately attacked by swarming magical beasts. We kicked them away and pressed forward.
The magical beasts that appeared had crystals embedded in their chests, and those with any semblance of human intelligence were nowhere to be found.
Countless wyverns swooped down from above, launching a surprise attack. While kicking back the approaching magical beasts, I prepared to intercept them with my battle axe. However, only one magical beast leaped out.
“Tch…”
“Heavenly Tears Guard Aegistear!”
A water barrier blocked the wyverns approaching from above, allowing me to swiftly slash down the magical beast that had emerged.
After she landed on the barrier, Aria sprinted, engulfed in flames, and elegantly slashed through the passing wyverns.
With the magical beasts temporarily gone, Aria and Serena gathered around.
“Both of you, thanks for the help.”
“No problem. Protecting is what we excel at.”
“You’re welcome. However, this is…”
As Aria looked at the defeated magical beasts, Ruscudite appeared, frowning as she observed them.
“These creatures give off an unpleasant feeling.”
“Unpleasant feeling?”
“Aye, their existence is similar to ours, but… they’ve forcibly brought out desires and are unable to return. That’s the feeling I get.”
“Desires…?”
There was a point of agreement. Both Greb and the captive we caught wouldn’t have been foolish enough to commit such thoughtless acts.
While I didn’t intend to defend them, there seemed to be something in these crystals that compelled people to do such things. It was a natural conclusion to reach.
“…For now, let’s keep going. The town ahead should have a protective barrier against magical beasts. If we’re lucky, it might still be safe.”
We continued our journey, departing with Garma pulling the carriage. The Duke’s territory was vast, and the frequency of attacks was high. Unlike when I first arrived in the kingdom, we couldn’t afford to advance disregarding our exhaustion.
As we defeated magical beasts along the way, a town surrounded by stone walls came into view. As we approached the gate, there was no gatekeeper, and signs of magical beast attacks were evident on the walls.
I pushed against the gate, and the latch wasn’t engaged. Putting strength into my body through physical enhancement, I slowly opened it.
“This is…”
Inside the town, it seemed like both corpses and magical beasts had run amok. Judging from the state of the fallen bodies, it had been more than a day. Among them, some were armed, but nearly half were civilians.
“Damn it…”
Aria grimaced at the gruesome scene, and Serena chanted a sacred verse. However, amid this, we heard a sound.
It was the sound of combat. Someone was currently alive, and that was certain.
“There!”
Drawing my sword, I urged Garma to run. Passing through the streets and reaching the square, we witnessed a bizarre scene: a massive slug-like magical beast was making strange noises while looking upwards.
At the end of its gaze, a warrior clad in rock armor was about to swing a giant single-edged sword.
“Nngh!!”
The descending blade was absorbed into the magical beast’s head as if being sucked in. Slicing through its slime-covered body vertically, when it touched the ground, a roar accompanied the splitting earth.
The magical beast collapsed, scattering slime and bodily fluids. In the midst of this, the helmeted eyes of the warrior, reminiscent of an ogre, focused on us.
