The Second Son of The Marquis Runs Away from Home ~ Lacking Talent, He Abandons Everything and Becomes an Adventurer ~ - 99
Chapter 99: Those Who Resist Death (United Army Side)
A little earlier in time…
“The victory conditions for this battle are twofold: defeat Mudo and close the Gate of Yomi,” I explained to the generals gathered in the command tent.
“So, in addition to us, Amane, Hinowa, and Aria will strike once they’ve taken down the big ones and immediately charge toward Tendo Castle. During that time, I need you to draw the outside Yomi soldiers away so they don’t reach us,” I continued.
“Draw them away, you say… But we face 25,000 soldiers, and they have 30,000. Without the use of divine artifacts, just drawing them away will be quite disadvantageous for us,” one of the generals asked, seemingly wondering if there was a plan. I responded, showing the map on the table.
“True, if we fight head-on, the casualties would be significant. So…”
“Is the setup done?!”
“It’s ready!”
“Good! Everyone, fall back!”
At the order from Ilma and the other generals, the united army began to retreat. As the army fell back like a receding wave, the Yomi soldiers followed closely behind. However, the mages assigned to each squad immediately began casting their spells.
Just after, columns of fire rose in a straight line. Yomi soldiers who ran into the flaming barriers either burned and fell or were slowed as they passed through, some catching fire.
“Now! Fire!”
At the command, arrows were shot in unison. The arrows, which had spells inscribed on them, arced through the air and rained down on the Yomi soldiers. When they pierced the Yomi soldiers, the struck areas rapidly decayed, causing them to collapse.
(Yomi soldiers are undead monsters called “undead” on the Human continent. That’s why fire and anti-magic spells have a significant effect on them.)
(While holding them off, if we can set up traps and draw them in, the lower-level Yomi soldiers, who can only follow simple commands, should be easy to handle.)
“…I didn’t expect it to work this well.”
Ilma swallowed nervously but continued to assess the situation. Then, from two directions, giants and beasts began to leap over the flaming barriers.
(But the flying soldiers or higher-level ones might get past. The flying ones, at least, are manageable, but the higher-level giants and beasts…)
“Ahhahaha! Hahahahahaha!”
With a loud laugh, Setsura, wielding a great sword, jumped higher than the giants, her grin menacing. She brought her sword down, crushing the giant’s head and helmet in one strike.
“Ah, seriously!? This isn’t my style!”
“Hmph!!”
Hiruko wrapped a water serpent around the legs of a beast, freezing its movements, while Fudou severed its limbs. The fallen beast’s body was sliced with a sword infused with fire, and Hiruko, using magic, shattered its head.
“It seems you still have some energy left to talk, huh? Let’s go!” Fudou said.
“Ugh! The new general is even more demanding than Lord Shion!?” Hiruko replied, shaking off his usual laziness as he followed Fudou. The three of them, following Belk’s orders, ran across the battlefield, fighting higher-level Yomi monsters.
(With this, we might be able to hold our ground.)
Ilma thought to himself, but reminded himself that being too optimistic was dangerous. He immediately ordered the next step of the plan.
