Chapter 14: The Physical Exam – “Want to do it again?”
The slender earpiece of the glasses randomly poked her eye corner, causing Xie Shiwei to instinctively tilt her head.
She dodged it.
But she paused, and quickly turned her face back.
In the past, Xie Shiwei had encountered many incidents similar to having her glasses snatched today.
Earthworms put in her schoolbag, books piled on the corner of her desk repeatedly knocked over, her hair suddenly grabbed by someone passing by while she was bent over doing homework, only for the person to run off by the time she looked up…
Before she started wearing her glasses and deliberately dressing the way she did now, these things would randomly, suddenly appear in her life—
She used to cry.
Later, she realized that poor, helpless vulnerability only became a feast for the tormentors.
Her tears were their adrenaline.
The best response was to show no emotion and immediately strike back according to the situation.
But Xie Shiwei never considered what she should do if the person she had a crush on was the one bullying her.
At this moment, her entire world had turned into a blur of colors.
Yet, the block of color that represented Jiang Xiyao still shone white and bright. She could even recognize the alluring red mole on the other’s lips.
Even though it was all a mosaic, the block belonging to Jiang Xiyao was still better-looking than everything else.
Then she remembered that when Jiang Xiyao was annoyed with someone, she only wanted them to disappear from her sight immediately. She would never deliberately initiate such a childish prank.
So why would she specifically try to make her cry?
Xie Shiwei, who only took off her glasses to wash her face or sleep, could not adapt to thinking in a blurry world.
She grew increasingly confused, only staring back with a blank, helpless look.
Jiang Xiyao waited for a long time. She neither saw the timid custard bun retreat nor struggle or resist.
But she also didn’t cry easily like last time, where tears streamed down her face and dropped uncontrollably from her jawline.
Jiang Xiyao even saw that the large, clear eyes, tired from being held open for so long, started to well up with moisture—but they stubbornly allowed the film of water to only shimmer in the eye sockets.
The tears swirled for a long time but refused to fall.
—What is this?
She supported her chin for a moment, then suddenly chuckled, asking as if to confirm:
“Not crying?”
Who was it that said she’d wear a collar and be her little dog? Is this how an obedient dog behaves?
The person in front of her unconsciously bit down on her lower lip. The sweat from earlier had cooled at her temples and neck, coupled with a face that was now pale, perhaps from low bl00d sugar or extreme shock.
She looked as though she would rather sway and pass out than submit.
“Honestly, you’re not well-behaved at all.”
When the tone of dissatisfaction, mixed with a hint of exasperation, reached her ears, Xie Shiwei was stunned. Just as she was about to say something, something hard and round was suddenly placed in her mouth.
Her tongue instinctively pushed against it, melting a strong green apple flavor.
…A hard candy?
Her body, desperate for sugar, instinctively held the candy under her tongue. In that short moment, the particularly bright, white block of color had already left her sight.
Xie Shiwei reflexively reached out, but her outstretched fingers only grasped the glasses left on the ground.
When she finished checking the glasses and put them back on, only she remained in the empty corner of the gym.
She blinked in confusion, and the tears that had been irritating her eyes now fell unconsciously.
—What exactly did Senior Jiang want to do just now?
…
The Unkindness of Friends
Clutching her confusion, she regained her strength and walked back toward the physical examination area. But her mind was obsessively replaying the word “not well-behaved.”
She said she wasn’t well-behaved, yet why did she give her a candy?
In the crowded indoor testing area of the gym, Xie Shiwei, standing alone at the edge, suddenly covered her face in a corner, her face completely flushed.
[Could it be that Senior was really complimenting me when she said I looked pretty while crying? It wasn’t my hallucination?]
[Does Senior really like to see me cry?]
[Impossible, impossible. The person I like couldn’t be a pervert like that.]
While Xie Shiwei was still pondering, a group chat voice message popped up on her phone.
Her roommates were asking each other when they planned to do their physical exams. Xie Shiwei quickly said she was right there in the gym, lining up for the sit-ups, and asked if anyone wanted to join.
“I can. Wait for me. I’ll take a few laps after eating in the cafeteria and then come.”
“I can come now, too. You can help me see which line is short. I might as well get all the tests done.”
Xie Shiwei agreed to both.
No matter who came, she would have a partner.
Because of this, she temporarily sustained her energy with the sweetness of the green apple candy, didn’t rush to the cafeteria for lunch, and immediately joined the sit-up line to prepare for her roommates’ arrival.
An hour and a half later—
“Student, are you… taking this set?”
The person standing behind her in line asked tentatively as they saw her stand by the green mat again.
Xie Shiwei quickly stepped back, still unable to see her roommates in the crowd. She habitually pushed her glasses up and spoke: “My partner hasn’t arrived. I’ll go to the next group. You go ahead.”
“Thanks,” two girls nodded and smiled at her.
But Xie Shiwei barely had the strength left to curve her lips.
Just now, the roommate who said she was going for a walk to digest her food supposedly found her favorite skincare products on sale at a downtown mall and asked her to wait longer.
And the one who asked her to help plan which tests to take said she met friends from another department at the track field, who agreed to do the tests together, so she wouldn’t be partnering with Xie Shiwei.
When she received the messages, she checked the time; the cafeteria had long since closed.
Xie Shiwei let out a tiny sigh, seeing their apology messages in the chat box, and typed back a weak “It’s okay.”
She decided to find another solo girl in the line and partner up temporarily.
But her luck was clearly not good today.
“Oh, I’m actually waiting for someone.”
“My friend is running nearby and will be here soon. Why don’t you ask someone else?”
“You… don’t have a friend with you? Should I ask one of my roommates if they’re free?”
Numb from being rejected, she even received pity from the senior student recording the test scores.
Xie Shiwei quickly waved her hands: “No, no need. Thank you, Senior. Don’t bother… Can I just do it alone?”
She had thought about it.
The partner for sit-ups mainly helps hold down the feet to prevent using leg strength and incorrect form. If she could manage to only use her core, it should be… okay?
She just didn’t know if she could do seventy sit-ups in one minute for full marks.
The senior student looked at her with even more sympathy: “Why don’t you come back around 5 PM? I can help you then. Doesn’t your batch’s physical test count toward your final GPA? It affects your scholarship.”
Xie Shiwei wanted to come back later, but her part-time job schedule was full.
She couldn’t come in the afternoon.
She bit her lip: “It’s okay. I’ll just try my best.”
The senior glanced at a mat that had just become vacant in the corner and reached for her student ID card: “Then go ahead now.”
…
The Sit-Up
Lying on the mat, Xie Shiwei tried hard to ignore the onlookers’ gazes, assuring herself they were just curious about the testers’ ability and scores, not specifically watching her.
However, the intense stares multiplied, and a commotion even started in the crowd.
“Wow, wow, wow! Hurry and look!”
“Why is she here?”
Xie Shiwei frowned at the chatter. The moment she involuntarily opened her eyes, she caught sight of a stunning profile standing ahead and instantly understood.
“Why would Jiang Xiyao come here? Doesn’t she always skip the test? A whole group of people usually fights to take it for her.”
“Who knows? Maybe she suddenly developed a crush on some rich second generation and wants a new rich man to cling to.”
“I’ve never seen the elegant Ms. Jiang Xiyao break a sweat. Guess how many points our Art Department’s fragile goddess will get? I bet she’ll just pretend to struggle for five minutes, then sit up and say she’s too tired.”
As the talk grew bolder, the woman, accustomed to being the center of attention, merely lowered her gaze to look at Xie Shiwei.
Xie Shiwei instinctively sat up with a carp jump motion, blinking knowingly to move aside:
“Senior Jiang… you, you first?”
Jiang Xiyao glared at her.
She had been enjoying her meal peacefully at a Michelin restaurant when she suddenly heard the voice of a starving ghost singing, “I’m so hungry, so hungry, so hungry~ I’m really hungry~”
A moment later, the girl’s inner thoughts took on a theatrical flair, playing the role of a poor, sad little cabbage—not only having lost her mother but now having no friends to complete the physical test with, wailing about how pitiful she was, so pitiful.
Annoyed by her inner monologue, Jiang Xiyao noticed that this custard bun, who acted tough and unyielding toward her, only timidly said “it’s okay” to those idiots who dared to stand her up.
Huh? “It’s okay”?
She’s so tolerant of those wastes.
Jiang Xiyao squatted down expressionlessly: “Lie down properly.”
Her eyes scanned with scrutiny the pants Xie Shiwei was too poor to replace, which were too short to cover her ankles, and then the pair of shoes that were inevitably yellowing no matter how hard she tried to clean them.
Finally, Jiang Xiyao reached out and precisely gripped her two slender ankles.
The familiar sensation in her palm caused her thumb, resting near the ankle bone, to suddenly rub the spot.
Huh?
Does this feel the same as the skin texture Xie Shiwei put on her body in her fantasy?
Xie Shiwei instantly flinched, trying to pull back with a look of terror: “Sen-Sen-Senior Jiang—”
“What is it?” Jiang Xiyao raised an eyebrow: “These hands of mine would never touch cheap goods.”
So don’t expect her to help hold down your shoes or the tops of your feet.
[Ah, ah, ah, is that the point? Isn’t the point why she’s suddenly helping me? And, and why is she touching my ankle while saying she won’t touch cheap goods?]
[Is it my imagination? Did she just… just rub it?]
Xie Shiwei’s face immediately turned bright red.
When she was a child, her grandmother would gently tickle the soles of her feet to wake her up, fearing she’d be late and pitying her for waking up early. Because of this, she instinctively associated this kind of foot touch with the affection of a family member.
She had never been touched on the ankle by a stranger. She couldn’t help but curl her toes.
“No, Senior, Senior…”
Jiang Xiyao cut her off resolutely: “Start.”
Seeing Xie Shiwei tense up, she could only resign herself, close her eyes, hug her head, and begin the exercise.
Jiang Xiyao scoffed, then looked at the ankle she had gripped between her fingers.
How can someone have so many sensitive spots all over their body? She blushes just from a touch on her ankle, and even blushes when her glasses are touched?
Jiang Xiyao stared at her, but her peripheral vision caught sight of people in other groups bouncing up and down uncontrollably like fish on a cutting board. She silently compared their speeds—
“Xie Shiwei.” She suddenly urged with a cold face: “Hurry up.”
She specifically came back to school for this. Xie Shiwei had better not lose to anyone.
[Huh? Huh? B-but if I go faster, my legs will move! Senior is only using one hand, only a few fingers. How, how am I supposed to use force?]
But the moment she heard Jiang Xiyao slowly and menacingly say her name again through clenched teeth.
Xie Shiwei’s survival instinct kicked in, causing her to frantically accelerate.
Her thoughts also began to scatter uncontrollably.
[Ah, ah, these dead legs better stay planted in the ground! If I dare kick the Senior, my life is over!]
Jiang Xiyao scoffed internally. You’d be lucky to move those legs one centimeter today.
[Ugh, if I sit up too fast, will I hit the Senior? If I accidentally hit her lips, will she accuse me of molestation, or assault and battery?]
Dream on. You want to kiss me from this distance? In your dreams.
Xie Shiwei had no idea that her every thought was being heard. She just kept her eyes closed and worked vigorously until the stopping whistle blew, and the senior student recording the scores asked:
“What’s the score for this group?”
She snapped her eyes open: She forgot to count!
Xie Shiwei’s mind went blank as she stared at the ceiling, momentarily afraid to look at Jiang Xiyao’s expression.
She feared hearing a single word like “waste,” and even more so, feared that Jiang Xiyao, knowing they had to start over, would simply walk away, leaving her alone…
“68.” A lazy voice came from in front of her.
Xie Shiwei looked over blankly, only meeting a pair of shimmering, black eyes filled with slight mockery:
“If you had just gone faster at the start, this wouldn’t have happened. You wasted your own time.”
Seeing that Xie Shiwei seemed too overwhelmed to move, just lying there foolishly.
Jiang Xiyao paused, then asked lightly: “Want to do it again?”
This question seemed to trigger a switch in Xie Shiwei. Her face turned red, and she frantically shook her head.
She stammered an explanation: “N-n-no, no need. Thank you, Senior Jiang. I, my other tests were full marks, and if you round this up, it’s close enough…”
Most importantly, she felt terrible pain in her ankles, whether it was from the adrenaline rush of seeing her crush or from the extreme restraint she put on her legs.
Jiang Xiyao withdrew her hand, stood up without much expression: “Oh.”
Her eyes caught sight of the two formerly delicate, thin ankles where pale blue veins were visible, now marked by a raised, half-circle of red, resembling finger marks.
The accidental culprit felt no guilt.
Instead, she shifted the blame entirely. It’s all this custard bun’s fault for howling; I thought she’d have more strength if she used her legs.
In any case, Xie Shiwei brought this upon herself.
Thinking this, she calmly walked out of the crowd, only to hear that familiar voice making noise again:
[‘Lie down properly,’ ‘Want to do it again’—who taught my Senior such words? Wuwu, I didn’t dare get up just now because my pants suddenly got wet. Can I ever look at a sit-up again?]
[So hateful. I feel a tingle in my ears every time I think about it. How many pairs of underwear do I have at home to change into tonight, wuwu… It’s too lustful, too lustful. My legs are too weak to stand up…]
Jiang Xiyao’s footsteps suddenly halted.
She remembered the fantasy frenzy where Xie Shiwei imposed her own skin texture onto her, transposed certain close-up body parts onto her, and even had exaggerated reactions to being touched.
Jiang Xiyao suddenly recalled the transparent jet of water that had made her jump up in class.
Her expression slowly turned playful.
Could it be…
That someone really can turn into a little fountain?
