Chapter 6: The Funeral – “Don’t you dare stop until I say so.”
Xie Shiwei hopped onto her little electric scooter, ready to take Zhong Chuyao out for a ride and dinner.
Zhong Chuyao came from a very good family, but she had absolutely no airs of a rich person. When she first heard Xie Shiwei was going to buy an electric scooter for delivery work, she even excitedly came along to help her pick it out.
As she put on her helmet, she didn’t forget her regret: “I still really wish you had picked the pink one, it was super cute.”
Despite Zhong Chuyao’s heroic face and cool demeanor, she actually needed various animal dolls on her bed to sleep and was very fond of the color pink.
However, Xie Shiwei hadn’t chosen the pink scooter her friend strongly recommended because such a unique little vehicle parked on the street would attract a lot of unnecessary trouble—
It was like taking off her glasses, exposing her forehead, and putting on those pretty clothes; inside, she was still the same, but the way others looked at her was completely different.
Xie Shiwei knew the fault wasn’t hers or the pink scooter’s, but she was already using all her strength just to live, and she simply didn’t have the extra energy to deal with those annoyances.
She gently patted the handlebars. “Little Black is great, too. He’s been enduring the sun and overtime with me all summer, and now he has to go hungry to take us to dinner.”
Zhong Chuyao glanced at the battery level and quickly changed her tune. “Poor Little Black! Hang in there, Little Black!”
Xie Shiwei laughed. As she straddled the scooter, she inexplicably recalled the woman from a while ago, who was so self-righteously standing in the crowd, complaining that others hadn’t pleased her enough.
If it were Senior Jiang, she would definitely choose the option that best suited her taste and matched her beauty, wouldn’t she?
Because Jiang Xiyao was the type who was beautiful and knew it, whose face seemed to declare, “It’s a blessing you’ve accrued over three lifetimes of good karma just to see this beauty,” convinced that the world could be wrong, but never her.
Perhaps this was why Xie Shiwei had been instantly and hopelessly drawn into Jiang Xiyao the first time she saw her.
She was so envious and so deeply admired Senior Jiang’s confidence and flair! After all, a woman needed to look at beauties like her to find the strength to face life!
…
A Date with Snakes
“Why… are you smiling so exaggeratedly?”
At the restaurant.
Zhong Chuyao, sitting across the table and ordering, looked up to see Xie Shiwei’s smile arching wildly.
Xie Shiwei quickly snapped back to reality, found she couldn’t immediately flatten the smile, and just replied, “I haven’t seen you in a long time. I’m happy.”
Zhong Chuyao raised an eyebrow. “How happy?”
Before Xie Shiwei could make something up, Zhong Chuyao smiled and swiftly followed up:
“I hear a very professional reptile pet store has opened downtown here. How about you accompany me for a look later?”
Xie Shiwei’s smile instantly vanished.
Zhong Chuyao’s hobby was keeping snakes. Xie Shiwei’s first brave visit to her friend’s house had resulted in a spontaneous fainting spell.
She knew she had to warn her. “Don’t scare me. If I pass out…”
Zhong Chuyao immediately promised, “I’ll catch you. You won’t get hurt.”
But today, Xie Shiwei was surprisingly resilient.
After entering the reptile house, she was even captivated by a small, juvenile snake of a vibrant emerald green, whose scales were translucent like turquoise.
So beautiful. It reminded her of the green dress Jiang Xiyao wore in the police station that day.
Xie Shiwei secretly nudged her. “Look at the green one, it’s so beautiful! Its head is round and so cute!”
What a tasteful snake! It’s as beautiful as the Senior’s dress! You’re rewarded with fifteen years of glorious life at the Zhong family!
Xie Shiwei coaxed her. “OMG! Buy it!”
Zhong Chuyao was unenthusiastic. She had seen the Oriental Green Snake before, the “Reptile World’s Sudden Death King.”
“This breed is hard to keep,” she casually explained. “It dies easily.”
So picky, so delicate. Feels even more like Senior Jiang.
Xie Shiwei suddenly really wanted this snake to live a long life. She asked regretfully,
“Chuchu, even you can’t keep it?”
Zhong Chuyao: “?”
She frowned. “First, that reverse psychology is outdated.”
“Second, I can buy it, but in the future, when you come to my house, you have to sleep in the same room as it.”
Xie Shiwei thought, Loving something for the sake of another is a bad habit.
But Zhong Chuyao thought it was a good idea and resolutely bought the snake.
On the drive back, Xie Shiwei deeply reflected on her “love-addled” behavior of thinking of Jiang Xiyao in connection with everything.
No, no, I can’t keep going like this. If my love is too deep, how sad will I be when Senior Jiang graduates?
Love is restraint—
I’ll punish myself by not seeing the Senior before next week’s elective class!
…
An Invitation to a Funeral
Xie Shiwei even rearranged her work and study schedule for this purpose, until she returned to her dorm and ran into You Jiayi again.
The other woman held another letter, though the cover was now white.
“…No way? This persistent?”
You Jiayi approached, gritting her teeth. “That thing I gave you—”
Xie Shiwei quickly cut her off. “I passed it on, I really gave it to her.”
“You’re lying!” You Jiayi stared at her categorically. “If you gave it to her, I left my contact information at the end. Why hasn’t she added me until today?!”
Xie Shiwei tried to tactfully explain a common fact.
“Well, is there a chance that the result of a confession isn’t just the ‘acceptance’ option, but another one—”
You Jiayi sneered, nodding. “The other option is that you didn’t take it seriously and failed to convey my feelings properly.”
“I knew it. You simply don’t want to see her and me together.”
Xie Shiwei’s voice was weak. “I don’t…”
You Jiayi threw the “letter” in front of her. “Then why did you sneak off to an event she attended without telling me?”
Xie Shiwei focused her eyes.
She realized it wasn’t a love letter, but a funeral announcement sent by Tang Hui’s family, inviting classmates to pay their respects.
Xie Shiwei guaranteed feebly, “Then next time—”
“Next time?” You Jiayi looked at her with dissatisfaction, pointing at the obituary. “Don’t you dare brush me off. This time!”
“I checked. The family sent this to all the students who were there that night. Jiang… she must have one too.”
“The funeral. You’ll take me with you. I also want to lay a flower for this senior whom I’ve never met…”
Xie Shiwei: Do you really want to send a flower?
She was genuinely exhausted by the creativity of Jiang Xiyao’s suitors. She could only utter two words:
“Cash gift.”
Attending a funeral costs money. She was already out of pocket from the unpaid balance for Senior Tang’s previous gig.
You Jiayi dismissed the thought that Xie Shiwei was competing for her crush when she saw her being so cheap, even stingy about a chance to see Jiang Xiyao.
[Sigh. Really, I wanted to severely punish myself by not seeing my wife anymore, but ultimately, I just can’t control it.]
[Since things have come to this, let’s just enjoy the feast first. Fortunately, You Jiayi is paying the cash gift. She’s a good person, just like Senior Tang!]
…
A Proposal at the Wake
Jiang Xiyao heard that familiar voice again the moment she stepped through the Tang family’s front door.
She saw the voice’s owner, head down, chopsticks in hand, whose priority was immediately scooping up the lobster, hairy crabs, and spotted grouper on the table.
Jiang Xiyao was amused and annoyed.
What is this greedy girl unable to control? Her appetite?
Jiang Xiyao felt a perverse sense of satisfaction when she noticed Xie Shiwei didn’t approach. She watched You Jiayi walk up to her with a bright smile.
Then, she heard Jiang Xiyao actively invite You Jiayi to light incense together later.
Xie Shiwei stopped her chopsticks and looked up. Jiang Xiyao was actually smiling at You Jiayi. It was a genuine, even cordial smile.
Xie Shiwei froze.
Seeing that she had finally lost her good appetite, Jiang Xiyao felt a sense of vindication and speculated darkly:
Let me see. Will this creature come over to fight, or will she just wimp out and cry miserably?
[Is the Senior actually not straight? Does she like the ‘T’ type like You Jiayi?]
[If she becomes someone else’s girlfriend—]
What are you going to do?
[Then I can’t just casually fantasize about her anymore, can I? That’s so rude! Ugh, it’s so sudden. She didn’t even give me a heads-up! It’s left me with zero psychological preparation!]
[Forget it. Since you’re being unkind, don’t blame me for being unjust. Although the setting isn’t quite right, this is my last chance to be self-righteously bossy!]
Jiang Xiyao felt like she was losing her ability to understand Chinese.
[Hmph! I was going to be nice to you, but since you chose her, you’ll have plenty of chances to be on the bottom later. Now, get up and work! Your manicure is pretty, but you have no ‘Top’ morals. Cut it off!]
[Then, use those long, straight fingers of yours with the frequency of a jackhammer. Don’t you dare stop until I say so—]
Outside the Tang family’s villa, in the outdoor tent seating.
No one noticed the unremarkable girl sitting in the corner among the crowded tables, her face obscured by her bangs and glasses, as she lowered her head.
Under the tablecloth, where no one could see, her legs, which had been neatly placed, suddenly clamped tightly together.
No one knew.
In Xie Shiwei’s imagination, her legs were currently forced to wrap around a soft, charming waist.
Except for Jiang Xiyao, who was forced to listen to every single movement she made:
“…”
The malicious anticipation in Jiang Xiyao’s eyes vanished.
Her gaze momentarily blank, she suddenly and expressionlessly grabbed a wet wipe from the table and began to aggressively, hatefully scrub her right index finger.
Under You Jiayi’s strange look, she rubbed the index finger repeatedly from tip to base until it was red.
Then she paused.
Gritting her teeth, she started scrubbing her middle finger.
“Jiang Xiyao… Senior, are you alright?” You Jiayi tried to ask.
Jiang Xiyao was no longer curious what Xie Shiwei meant by using her hand that way, because she just wanted to murder the girl for daring to use it like that!
She gave You Jiayi a sinister smile. “You like me very much?”
You Jiayi was flustered for a moment, then lightly nodded.
Jiang Xiyao’s eyes did not reflect her appearance; she only continued to ask:
“Then what are you willing to do for me?”
“For instance—kill your roommate?”
