Chapter 18: Ringing the Bell – “I’ll kill you!”
The atmosphere in the parking lot was heavy, with a chill accumulating in the corners, empty and silent.
In an unnoticed corner, a low-profile black sedan had been parked for a long time. The blurry fogged window reflected a pair of captivating, amber-like eyes, yet they were spiritless and dull.
Shen Qiudu stood alone in front of the car door, his thin lips pressed into a straight line, his face bloodless. He calmly surveyed Xu Zhouye’s figure inside the car through the window.
A moment later, the car window rolled down. Xu Zhouye looked at Shen Qiudu and said in a low voice, “Get in.”
In the enormous, empty parking lot, the sound of the door closing was exceptionally harsh. The space inside the car was cramped, leaving only the sound of two people breathing.
“Why the sudden change of time? Did something happen with Wen Jiangchu?”
Xu Zhouye frowned, his tone slightly impatient. It seemed that the sudden shift had made him annoyed.
He was a person who utterly disliked things going off-track.
Shen Qiudu kept silent about everything that had just happened and simply brushed it off. “Nothing, it was just easier to leave the Wen family now, so I seized the opportunity.”
“What, are you reluctant to take me away early?”
Shen Qiudu stared straight ahead, but all his senses were focused on Xu Zhouye.
An Omega’s sense of smell before and during the rut was extremely acute, capable of catching any subtle pheromone residue in the air.
The moment he opened the car door, Shen Qiudu caught a faint, subtle fruit scent.
If he wasn’t mistaken, this Alpha, Xu Zhouye, also seemed to be nearing his rut. However, green apples typically ripen between July and October. For the current time, Xu Zhouye’s rut was advanced by more than just a little.
Xu Zhouye “tsk’ed” softly, impatiently running his fingers over the steering wheel. His breathing grew heavier. “Shen Qiudu, don’t try to play smart with me.”
He glanced sideways at Shen Qiudu’s eyes, looking displeased. “If I were unwilling, I wouldn’t have rushed here.”
“But it’s too early right now. Your father is still on the way and can’t make it early.”
“Where are you planning to take us to meet? My mother is still in a coma at the Wen family’s house. Xu Zhouye, are you sure you can take my mother away right under Wen Jiangchu’s nose?”
Shen Qiudu spoke calmly, seemingly only curious, with no other intentions.
Xu Zhouye snorted, inserted the car key, and the black car silently drove out of the underground parking garage.
“Who said I’d be doing it behind Wen Jiangchu’s back?”
Xu Zhouye clenched his fingers, the smile in his eyes chilling. “I want Wen Jiangchu to know that everyone he cares about will eventually leave him. He deserves it.”
The words he spoke were laced with a chill, harsh and nauseating. Yet, Xu Zhouye appeared completely unfazed, as if these things meant nothing to him.
Or perhaps, he had said them countless times before.
Shen Qiudu’s hand, hanging in the dark, rubbed the corner of his clothes. Most of his body was hidden in the seat, completely like an easily unnoticed small transparent figure. Listening to Xu Zhouye’s words, he showed no reaction but changed the subject.
“Where are you taking me? What are we going to do?”
“I’ll have your father brought to my house first. After you meet, I’ll send people to take you to the airport to leave Suzhou City. No matter how powerful the Wen family is in Suzhou, they can’t be reckless in another city.”
“Afterward, I will arrange for your mother to be sent to your destination separately. Shen Qiudu, if possible, you’d better never come back for the rest of your life.”
Xu Zhouye brought Shen Qiudu to the Xu Residence, which was located by a lake, sparsely populated. Not far away was a large bridge leading to a neighboring city.
“What is that place?” Shen Qiudu asked, pointing at the bridge.
Xu Zhouye glanced over casually, without thinking much. “Lu Shui Bay Bridge. What, you don’t know it?”
Shen Qiudu stared at the Lu Shui Bay Bridge for a long time, his somewhat chapped lips moving. “No, it’s the first time I’ve heard of it.”
A simple lie was spoken by Shen Qiudu with a poker face. The air by the lake was thick, churning uncomfortably in his heart. Under the extreme tension, he seemed unusually excited.
Xu Zhouye didn’t notice anything amiss with Shen Qiudu and led him directly into the Xu Residence.
The Xu Residence was empty. Heavy curtains were drawn completely, leaving almost no light. The entire room had only one dim lamp. By the weak light, Shen Qiudu, who was closely following Xu Zhouye, noticed a fleeting figure.
She moved quickly, hunching over to whisper something in Xu Zhouye’s ear.
“Call the doctor. If he refuses treatment, then leave him be. It’s best if he dies.”
Xu Zhouye’s voice was cold and thin, like he was pronouncing a death sentence on a pitiful, weak ant. Seeing that the elderly woman was about to say more, Xu Zhouye impatiently interrupted her. “That’s enough! I don’t want to hear about him anymore!”
“I have important things to do today. Lock him up and make sure he doesn’t come out to harm anyone.”
Shen Qiudu watched the slightly agitated Xu Zhouye with cold eyes, only smelling the fruit fragrance in the air growing thicker and richer.
The elderly woman acknowledged him a few times, cautiously glancing at Shen Qiudu. When their eyes met, she quickly looked away in fright, dragging her heavy form and disappearing into the darkness.
Shen Qiudu vaguely saw the woman go up to the second floor, and then a series of violent thudding sounds followed. A man’s sharp roar was heard: “Xu Zhouye! Why haven’t you died yet! Why!”
“Let go of me! I’m not sick! How dare you lock me up?! I’ll kill you!”
Shen Qiudu had witnessed scenes like this many times since childhood, so he felt neither fear nor surprise. But the man in the Xu Residence…
Shen Qiudu suddenly recalled the past mentioned by Xue Shankè earlier. That man should be Xu’s father.
He felt a slight surprise. Imprisoning one’s own father and leaving him for dead was indeed characteristic of Xu Zhouye’s methods.
Shen Qiudu steadied himself and nonchalantly asked, “Where now?”
“You don’t seem scared.”
“I’ve seen too much of this in the slums, so there’s nothing to be afraid of.”
“Don’t tell me that. I won’t sympathize with you.”
Xu Zhouye snorted and then led Shen Qiudu into a hidden dark room on the first floor.
“Where is this?”
Shen Qiudu surveyed the room’s furnishings. It was clean and tidy, with nothing but daily necessities. The only thing on the desk was a photo frame, a picture of Xu Zhouye in his youth, though in the weak light, it was barely visible that it had been torn.
“Bedroom.”
Xu Zhouye forcefully snatched the photo frame from Shen Qiudu’s hand, and a sharp splinter unexpectedly scratched Shen Qiudu’s finger.
His eyes were cold, and he spoke irritably, “Did no one teach you not to casually touch other people’s things?”
“Wait here. I’ll call you when your father arrives.”
“Shen Qiudu, don’t try any tricks. You can’t escape from here. I’m putting you here to protect you. If you take one step out, you won’t survive.”
Shen Qiudu couldn’t grasp the meaning of Xu Zhouye’s words, but he didn’t seem to be lying. He thought of the man’s curses on the second floor and nodded, feigning obedience.
Suddenly, the sound of someone fiercely stomping down the stairs echoed throughout the house.
“Young Master, Young Master Xu, something’s wrong! Your father escaped!”
As soon as the words fell, Xu’s father rushed into the room with a cold, sharp cleaver, lunging at Xu Zhouye like a madman.
“I’ll kill you… I’ll kill you! You bastard!”
