Chapter 3: Jingle the Bells “Save Him”
The day Shen Qiudu had half of his scent gland cut off was during a typhoon.
It was also the day his father was preparing to sell him.
He still remembered when he was a child, his father would lift him high with a look of gratification, treating him as his only treasure.
“Our Qiudu is really so beautiful.”
“We must keep a close eye on Qiudu, so other Alphas don’t covet him.”
But when gambling addiction embedded itself in every inch of that man’s skin, Shen Qiudu saw nothing but endless desire in his eyes.
The person who once protected him became the first sword to strike him down.
That was the first time his father lost everything, leaving only him and his mother.
His father returned home in a stupor, using alcohol to numb his nerves, constantly cursing everything that happened at the gambling table that day.
He had been threatened with a knife to his throat by those people, demanding he repay all his gambling debts within a day, or exchange a life for money, or pay with his own life.
Originally, his father hadn’t thought of selling him. Shen Qiudu was still his proud son at the time.
It wasn’t until the deadline was approaching that a gambling friend, pretending to be casual, reminded him.
He said, I don’t have your good fortune, having such a good son. He’s beautiful and an Omega—he could completely cover the hundreds of thousands you owe in gambling debts.
He also said that if his daughter hadn’t been a regular Beta, she would have certainly paid off all his gambling debts.
In that moment, his father completely sobered up.
He held the wine bottle like a man-eating demon, emerging from the abyss, extending his claws toward the mere seventeen-year-old boy, the boy who trusted him unconditionally and exposed his vulnerable back.
When Shen Qiudu woke up again, he was tied up with rope in the room.
If he wasn’t mistaken, it wouldn’t be long before he was sold to the casino by his own father.
But fate was kind; a typhoon struck unexpectedly, grounding the boat that was supposed to take him away at the port, forcing him to be trapped indoors.
His father had left the house to negotiate a higher selling price for him. Fortunately, his mother, who was working outside, got off work early due to the typhoon and realized everything.
To his father, his weak and incompetent mother was like a silent ostrich, but he underestimated a mother’s love for her son.
The mother who had always been invisible and bullied in the home picked up a pair of scissors for the first time for him. Her thin body crashed through the rickety wooden door, and amidst the thunder and rain, she rushed breathlessly to the semiconscious Shen Qiudu.
“A-Du… I’m sorry, your mother is useless, I couldn’t protect you…”
“A-Du, Mom is here, don’t be afraid…”
His mother’s tears streamed down, their scalding heat burning the tightly bound rope, giving Shen Qiudu a chance to breathe.
But now, even with the ropes loosened, what could they do?
Run away?
But penniless and reliant on the father to barely survive, where could they run to?
An elderly woman over thirty with a semiconscious seventeen-year-old boy in this fierce typhoon had only a dead end ahead of them.
His mother held Shen Qiudu tightly in her arms, just like when she had first given birth to him.
But now, she regretted it immensely.
“I’m sorry, A-Du, it’s Mom’s fault. Mom shouldn’t have given birth to you…”
“And I certainly shouldn’t have given birth to an Omega. Mom has failed you…”
“Yes, yes! It’s the Omega… it’s all the Omega’s fault!”
“A-Du… A-Du, let’s not be an Omega anymore, no more!”
Shen Qiudu didn’t understand what his mother was saying. He looked through the window at the swirling clouds and saw the heavy rain pouring down. The howling wind pierced his ear canals, carrying raindrops that splashed wantonly on the glass.
The window glass suddenly reflected the scene inside the room.
In the dead of night, he saw his mother raising her hand high, a dazzling flash of light shimmering in her hand.
His mother had aimed the blades of the scissors at herself.
“Mom—”
Fear completely choked the words Shen Qiudu wanted to say.
The feeling of dull pain was like this long, relentless storm. In an instant, Shen Qiudu felt his entire body being eaten away and gnawed by piercing insects, dense and layered, weaving a huge spiderweb that trapped him, making escape impossible.
The flowing bl00d was about to drown Shen Qiudu. His eyes gradually lost color, and his body stiffened, falling straight onto his mother’s shoulder, like a zombie.
“I’m sorry, A-Du, Mom didn’t want this either…”
“But only this way can you survive!”
His mother’s hoarse cries were masked by the strong smell of bl00d and rain. Shen Qiudu only felt exhausted, so tired that he wanted to close his eyes.
Perhaps he shouldn’t have lived in the first place.
When his father rushed into the room, trembling and insane, he saw his mother embracing Shen Qiudu, crying until her voice broke.
And Shen Qiudu, his arms drooping weakly by his mother’s side, his eyes lifeless like still water, his hand still gripping the half of the scent gland that had been cut off.
The fierce typhoon seemed to hollow out the entire city, and on that day, Shen Qiudu also saw everything clearly.
As the thunder flashed, Shen Qiudu saw his father’s pale face.
He shed two lines of hot tears, knelt down, and crawled on the ground like a stray dog toward Shen Qiudu.
But he bypassed Shen Qiudu, who was still bleeding and facing a life-threatening situation, and instead carefully held up the piece of scent gland in Shen Qiudu’s palm.
How ironic.
Shen Qiudu closed his eyes in despair. On his pale face, the only tear of his youth flowed down.
The heavy dark clouds completely enveloped Shen Qiudu’s heart for many years after.
It seemed he would never await a dawn that belonged to him.
He was trapped and killed in that typhoon.
…
On the cold bed, Shen Qiudu curled up and slept in a corner, frowning tightly, his lips intermittently uttering stifled whimpers of pain.
He opened his eyes in terror, panting heavily, his back already soaked with sweat.
Fortunately, it was just another dream of that day.
He relaxed his body little by little, looking worn out. What met his gaze was no longer the dirty, poor rental house, and the item by his bedside was not a pair of self-defense scissors, but the bell Wen Jiangchu had given him.
He struggled to sit up against the bed, staring blankly at the bell, instinctively reaching out to touch it.
The next second, an abrupt and jarring knock sounded throughout the room.
Shen Qiudu’s nerves were taut. He stared intently at the door, his palm rubbing the bedside table, trying to grip a pair of scissors as he used to.
Unfortunately, he accidentally knocked the bell to the floor, where it let out a crisp chime.
At the same time, the person outside the door could be heard tightly grasping the doorknob, attempting to twist it open.
Fortunately, Shen Qiudu had deliberately locked the door before sleeping and had even added two clothes hangers, making it impossible for the person outside to open it, no matter how hard they twisted.
After a while, the person outside seemed to give up and fell silent.
Shen Qiudu sighed in relief, walked barefoot to the door nervously, put his ear against the crack, and held his breath, listening for movement outside.
What came through was Wen Jiangchu’s gentle, tentative voice.
“Shen Qiudu, are you awake?”
Shen Qiudu’s expression relaxed, but he didn’t lower his guard.
“Just woke up. What is it?”
“I heard you sounded a little uncomfortable from the next room, so I thought I’d come check on you. Is it the rain making your scent gland swell and hurt?”
The reminder was unneeded. As Wen Jiangchu mentioned it, the missing part of Shen Qiudu’s neck gland actually began to throb and swell.
How annoying.
“It’s fine. I’m used to it.”
“No, that’s not acceptable, Shen Qiudu. Don’t endure the pain, alright?”
“If you want to recover soon, you need to start taking it seriously now.”
“Can you open the door? I just want to see you.”
Shen Qiudu leaned his back against the door, his eyes lowered, “I don’t need you to look after me, and I don’t need your false kindness.”
“I won’t get treatment, and I don’t want you to help me get treated.”
“I don’t want to owe anyone anything.”
The current Shen Qiudu was already unable to offer anything to repay Wen Jiangchu’s life-saving grace.
If he truly let Wen Jiangchu fuss over his treatment, Shen Qiudu would genuinely have no choice but to sell himself to him to repay the debt.
Shen Qiudu absolutely did not want that.
Moreover, he still didn’t know what kind of person Wen Jiangchu truly was.
But someone with such an overflowing sense of sympathy would probably just play around with him.
Most likely, he was the kind of bad man his mother warned him about.
Therefore, he had to draw a clear line and not allow himself to be fooled by his superficial appearance.
Seeing that Shen Qiudu neither opened the door nor said anything.
Wen Jiangchu had no choice but to pull out his final trump card.
“I’m going to the slum fire site tomorrow to check on the casualties.”
“Shen Qiudu, if you open the door, I’ll take you with me, okay?”
This despicable bad man! He clearly knew what leverage to use against him!
But this was a rare opportunity to go back, and Shen Qiudu didn’t want to give it up.
So, he reluctantly unlatched the complicated locks and removed the clothes hangers, opening the door.
Shen Qiudu looked up and saw Wen Jiangchu standing outside in black silk pajamas. He was half a head taller than Shen Qiudu, almost completely overshadowing him.
Yet, it didn’t feel oppressive; instead, there was a sense of… gentleness.
Shen Qiudu paused for a second. Seeing his reaction, Wen Jiangchu immediately slipped past him and went around to his back to check on his scent gland.
The warm breath felt exactly like his mother’s tight embrace during that typhoon day.
But this time, it wasn’t to cut off his scent gland.
It was to save him—
Although Shen Qiudu didn’t know how truthful that statement was.
