- CHAPTER 2 - 3/6 The Silent Me Who Talks on the Phone at Midnight with the Class’s Most Beautiful Honor Student
“Sorry, Mook-san, I just remembered something in the living room. Can I step away for a couple of minutes?”
“Of course, no problem.”
Once she left, I rolled on my bed, shouting in my head. Ahh, I wanted to ask her directly—are you Sakura from my class? My imagination kept spinning out of control.
If I asked and was wrong, I could just laugh it off. But if it really was Sakura, wouldn’t that ruin everything? She said she liked talking about worries she couldn’t normally share. Maybe she only opened up because she thought I was a stranger. If she realized I was a classmate, these calls might end.
“Uwaaahhh…” I groaned, tumbling off the bed. Idiot.
She soon returned. “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“No worries, just perfect timing.”
I decided to stop obsessing. Out of all the high school girls in Kanto, what were the chances she was that Sakura? I should just enjoy talking.
“So, Yossy-san, do you prefer summer or winter?”
“Winter. The air’s clear, and it makes me want to take walks.”
“Do you like walking?”
“Yes. Sometimes I need to be alone. Being around people all the time makes me overthink.”
That didn’t sound like Sakura at all. She was always active and cheerful in class.
We talked more: about where she walked, cafés she stopped at, ice cream flavors, even how she used her allowance. The conversation flowed naturally, and I realized it didn’t matter who she was—I was just happy to talk like this.
After half an hour, it was already past midnight. “Wow, time flew,” she said.
“Yeah. Talking with you feels fast,” I agreed. It was like she could bend time.
“Busy tomorrow?” I asked.
“Yes, but I’ll manage.”
“Don’t overdo it.”
“Thanks. You’re kind, Mook-san.”
Sometimes she slipped from polite to casual speech, and it made my heart skip. She had once said she’d drop formal speech once we grew closer. Maybe that was happening now.
“But really, I have to push myself. Without effort, I’m hopeless.”
“I don’t think so.”
“I’m just hiding it well!”
That didn’t match Sakura either—she seemed perfect.
Then she added, “Actually, I just became student council president. And with track regionals coming up, it’s been busy. Everyone keeps saying, ‘Yoshino—ah, I mean, Yossy—don’t collapse!’”
“…Student council president and track? That’s impressive. Tell me more next time.”
“Sure. Good night, Mook-san.”
“Good night, Yossy-san.”
She hung up with her cheerful voice.
And then it hit me—
“IT’S DEFINITELY SAKURA-SAN!”
So she really was my classmate. I knew it!
