- Episode 1.7 - Meeting Someone I Didn't Want to See
Mistia felt refreshed after saying everything she wanted to say and left her uncle’s study. But as soon as she opened the door, she locked eyes with the last person she wanted to see—Alisha Redfield, the baron’s daughter.
(Ugh, this is the worst…)
Even though they lived in the same mansion, Mistia preferred to avoid her as much as possible. Behind Alisha stood three scruffy-looking spirit knights. They looked down at her coldly, but Mistia ignored them.
“Oh my, dear sister. I hope you’re doing well. Were you visiting Father?”
“Alisha… You too?”
“Yes. By the way… who is this gentleman?”
Alisha blushed slightly as she shifted her gaze toward Skia. Even though she was used to seeing spirits, Skia’s beauty surpassed them all. It was only natural for her to be interested.
With her teary eyes, she looked up at him, resembling a delicate rose fairy. Most men would be unable to resist her charm when she looked at them like that.
Mistia felt uneasy. Skia was kind, but that didn’t mean he would never betray her.
However, even if Skia ended up liking Alisha, Mistia had no intention of punishing him.
“He is my spirit.”
“What!? What do you mean? I thought you only had three spirits…”
“I thought so too, but it seems I summoned one more. He just wasn’t contracted before.”
“Then… he’s not contracted yet?”
Alisha’s eyes sparkled greedily. Her face clearly showed how much she wanted him. This spoiled girl always took whatever belonged to Mistia, sometimes even using calculated tears to get her way. In fact, Alisha’s schemes were one of the reasons Mistia was isolated in high society.
“No, I’ve already made a contract with him.”
“…! Then, that means there are now two Spirit Users…?”
“Hah! Newbie, you better be careful,” one of Alisha’s spirits sneered. “That one is weak and sneaky, too scared to even kill a bug.”
“Heh.”
Suddenly, Shaitan, one of Alisha’s spirits, couldn’t hold back his laughter. Ariel joined in, mocking Mistia as well. Only Shisha remained indifferent.
“What…?”
Skia, who had been silent until now, finally spoke. He stepped forward, standing protectively in front of Mistia. His chainmail clinked softly as he moved.
“Watch your mouth, traitors.”
“Hah? A weakling like you dares to talk back to me?”
“That’s my line. If my master allows it, I could turn you to ashes right now.”
A terrifying pressure filled the air, making Alisha and her spirits flinch. If Mistia didn’t stop this, it might turn into a fight. She recalled Skia’s words earlier—causing trouble in the mansion was the last thing she wanted.
“Skia, it’s fine.”
“But…”
“Ha! As if she could do anything!” Shaitan scoffed. “She’s never even let us use magic once.”
“Oh, Shaitan, please don’t bully my dear sister too much,” Alisha said sweetly.
“Alisha… Tch, fine.”
She reached out and took Shaitan’s hand, standing between them. His expression immediately softened. His face said, You’re so kind, really.
Mistia felt a headache from the sickeningly sweet atmosphere.
Then, Alisha turned toward Skia.
“Oh… I must apologize to you as well, dear spirit. I would love to talk with you properly next time.”
“…”
Skia didn’t even glance at her.
Seeing this, Alisha’s expression darkened. Feeling ignored, her frustration naturally turned toward Mistia. She smiled sweetly.
“By the way, dear sister, I’ve only just made my contract, but I can already use magic!”
“That’s wonderful. What kind of magic?”
“I can read Fire! I feel so relieved now that I can use magic.”
(She’s trying to say ‘Unlike you, dear sister,’ isn’t she? Wait… does she seriously think reading ‘Fire’ is impressive? No way…)
Mistia almost laughed.
Fire was a beginner-level spell. Anyone who wasn’t completely talentless could use it. Bragging about it was ridiculous.
Meanwhile, Mistia could use the highest-level magic in all four elements. Neither Alisha nor her spirits knew this. They didn’t even imagine she could read the Spirit Language.
“I see.”
“Yes, but I’m worried about you, sister. You must have struggled so much. I thought I could help ease your burden… but it seems you’re still carrying it all alone. It’s not too late.
Let me support you, dear sister.”
Alisha’s eyes shimmered with tears. She clasped her hands tightly against her chest, looking like a concerned little sister.
But Mistia felt disgusted.
This fake sob story had cost Mistia several friends before. They had accused her of bullying Alisha or crimes she had never committed.
(Ah… I see. She’s asking me to hand over Skia. And if I refuse, I wonder what she’ll try next?)
Until now, Mistia had given in to Alisha’s selfishness. Because they were family. Because she feared her spirits would be harmed.
But it had all been pointless.
“Thank you for your concern, but I don’t need it. Do you remember how you had my kind maid fired? You laughed as you threw Mother’s keepsake pendant into the fireplace. The maid burned her hands digging through the ashes to retrieve it for me. She suffered terrible burns… for me. And that’s just one example. So no, I don’t need your concern.”
“W-what…?”
Alisha’s face turned pale.
Mistia had never talked back to her before. She blinked in shock, her long lashes fluttering. Then, trembling, she spoke.
“Y-you’re lying! Why are you trying to frame me!? You’re so cruel, dear sister!”
Tears streamed down her large eyes as she threw herself against Ariel, sobbing loudly.
Shaitan shot Mistia a glare, while Ariel hesitated, awkwardly placing a hand on Alisha’s shoulder.
“Mistia, you don’t have to take out your frustration on your sister just because the contract was broken,” Ariel scolded gently.
“She’s not my real sister. And I have no more time to waste on this. Excuse me, dear spirits.”
Mistia gave a perfect curtsy.
Though people in high society called her odd, she never neglected her manners. Even with her busy schedule, she had practiced properly.
Leaving the stunned Alisha and her spirits behind, Mistia and Skia walked past them.
No doubt, in a few moments, Alisha would open the door and start screaming.
