- Episode 1.8 - Ariel, the High Water Spirit
“What the heck?! Nobody told me she made a contract with a new spirit!”
In the Redfield family’s mansion, each of Alisha’s spirits had their own room. Ariel slammed his fist against the wall of the room he had been given. Shisha spoke up, trying to calm him down.
“Why are you so angry? Didn’t you want to serve Alisha as your master?”
“That’s… true. But still! I can’t believe she just ‘threw us away’ and took in someone new so quickly!”
As he spoke, Ariel bit his nails.
He started pacing the room in frustration. Shisha leaned against the wall and watched with half-lidded eyes, looking completely uninterested. Feeling irritated by this, Ariel snapped at him.
“Aren’t you upset too, Shisha?! When we left for Alisha, Mistia didn’t even try to stop us! She’s so cold!”
“…I’m not upset. Half of my wish came true. Besides, Mistia didn’t have enough magic power to support three high-ranking spirits.”
“Oh, how kind of you!”
Ariel scoffed in a cold voice and threw himself onto the soft couch. He had thought Mistia would be desperate without her spirits and come running back to him. But his plan had completely failed, and now he was taking his anger out on Shisha.
“She’s just going to be abandoned soon, isn’t she?”
“Who knows? From what I saw, he seemed loyal to Mistia.
”
“Then… does that mean he and Mistia might get closer?”
“It’s possible.”
“No way…”
Ariel lowered his eyebrows and looked down.
It wasn’t like he had planned to betray Mistia from the start.
At first, he just wanted to be close to her, so he stayed nearby. But because of her weakening magic, Mistia could barely walk without looking pale. To increase her magic power, she shut herself away in the library or her room. “I can’t let the spirits I summoned leave because of my weakness,” she had said. Spirits depended on their master’s magic to stay in the world, so everything was tied to their master’s power.
She still attended school, but even during breaks, she only read books. The rest of the time, she worked on accounts or did maid work silently. Ariel only watched from the side. A proud spirit like him couldn’t lower himself to do servant work.
—It felt like she had no intention of bonding with the spirits.
To make things worse, Mistia didn’t have a lady’s maid. She used to have one, but the maid had left the Redfield family after some trouble. Alisha, on the other hand, had a personal maid, though they changed frequently.
So, despite being a noble lady, Mistia’s hair was always messy, and her clothes were patched and worn. She looked completely poor. She was always carrying a book under her arm. Naturally, Ariel looked down on her.
(“Raise your magic power”? That’s impossible. Mistia can’t do it.)
While she worked tirelessly for her family, Ariel gradually stopped going near her. He couldn’t believe in her anymore.
(But still, Mistia… I feel sorry for you. I care about you. I worry about you. Maybe making a contract was a mistake. Maybe if I left, you wouldn’t have to struggle so much. That would be better for you.)
A single drop of poison fell into Ariel’s heart. It was a strong poison.
—”She’s suffering. I should break the contract for her.”
One sunny day, back when Mistia and Ariel were still master and spirit…
“Mistia, I’m going to town with Alisha. Is that okay?”
“…Yes, take care.”
The smell of starch filled the laundry room. Mistia didn’t even glance at Ariel. She was sewing a simple dress for everyday wear because Alisha had ordered her to. Her fingertips were wrapped in bandages. She had been working while sleep-deprived and kept pricking her fingers with the needle.
There was a reason for her cold response. A spirit leaving their master’s side just to have fun was unheard of. Normally, spirits were supposed to protect their master. But Mistia had reluctantly agreed, thinking, “They need a break too.”
(Why won’t she say, ‘Don’t go, stay with me’?)
(Why won’t she look at me?)
But instead of appreciating her kindness, Ariel thought about something else entirely. He wanted to be needed. He wanted her to rely on him. Since she didn’t, his frustration turned into anger.
“Oh, my clothes are torn too! Fix them for me!”
Saying that, Ariel took off his coat and carelessly tossed it onto Mistia’s hands. Her hands stopped as the fabric covered them. Her tired violet eyes slowly turned toward Ariel.
For just a moment—Ariel felt satisfied.
“It will take time. Is that alright?”
Her voice was flat and businesslike. Ariel was furious. His face turned red with anger. He snatched the coat back from her and then threw it at her again, this time with force. Mistia flinched and closed her eyes. The needle she had been holding stabbed into her finger from the shock.
“…Ugh.”
She winced in pain, but Ariel didn’t notice.
“Have it finished by the time I get back!”
With that, Ariel stormed off. Mistia stared at the door in shock for a moment. But soon, she went back to sewing.
Ariel often threw tantrums like this.
As he hurried down the hallway, he thought of Mistia’s eyes. Amethyst was considered a semi-precious stone, not worth much. But in her eyes, it looked so breathtaking it made his heart tighten. More beautiful than any gemstone.
The moment he was first summoned and met Mistia’s eyes—he had been captivated.
—It was love at first sight.
“Mistia… I love you. I love you…”
That’s why I’ll play the villain and save you.
Ariel whispered to himself. He felt like the tragic hero of a story as he drowned in his feelings for Mistia.
