- Episode 2.11 - Earth Magic is Useful
At those words, silence fell over the area.
The “expert” being referred to was Solm, the earth spirit. Caught off guard by the sudden attention, Solm quickly turned his face away.
“You shouldn’t expect much from me. According to my former master, my magic is completely useless.”
“Even the highest-tier magic?”
“…Highest-tier magic?”
Solm instinctively asked Skia back. Now that he thought about it, Gilbert had only ever allowed Solm to use up to mid-tier magic. If it were Mistia, she might be able to let him use the highest-tier earth magic.
—However.
(It’s terrifying. If even the highest-tier earth magic turns out to be useless, then I…)
Suddenly, Solm recalled the moment in the rose garden when Mistia reached out to his battered self. If even she were to abandon him, would he truly become worthless? The fear of having that proven made his clenched fists tremble.
Skia, seeing Solm hesitate, gave him a daring smile.
“Don’t you want to test your true strength? …Come on, Sir Solm.”
“…!”
But Solm did not take the bait, keeping his head down despite Skia’s provoking words. Seeing this, Mistia turned to Solm and looked straight at him.
“As an earth spirit, you might be able to turn this situation around. Please, would you lend us your strength?”
Hearing the sincerity in her voice, Solm unconsciously lifted his face—and he saw it.
(Those eyes… Why? Why do you trust me?)
Mistia’s gaze was filled with expectation. It was like sunlight piercing through the depths of the ocean, illuminating the darkest corners of his heart.
(I hate humans—especially Gilbert. But… I’ve always known. Not all humans are as cruel as he is.)
Mistia’s eyes mirrored those Gilbert had when he first summoned Solm—filled with surprise, excitement, anticipation, and joy. Deep down, Solm had wanted to live up to those expectations. He had wanted to stand by Gilbert’s side, supporting him as he became king. But that dream had never come true.
That same gaze now shook Solm’s heart once more. Even after being kicked down repeatedly by Gilbert, Solm, as a spirit, had never been able to truly hate humans.
Just as he hadn’t been able to push away Mistia’s slender arms.
“I do owe you a favor. But don’t blame me for whatever happens.”
It was too frustrating to simply agree, so instead, he spoke under the pretense of “repaying a debt.”
Solm stretched out his hand, summoning the Spirit Tome. The book floated toward Mistia, landing in her hands. She looked surprised for a moment, then smiled like a blooming flower.
“Thank you, Sir Solm.”
“N-No need to thank me…”
Solm felt somewhat embarrassed by her smile. Though Mistia often gave off a cold impression, her smile was warm.
(She’s certainly an unusual one, caring about someone like me.)
Unaware of Solm’s gaze, Mistia eagerly placed her hands on the cover of the tome.
“I’ll start reading it right away. Let’s see… Oh!”
As she flipped through the pages, her eyes sparkled with excitement. Seeing this, Skia approached her.
“What does it say?”
“It’s incredible, beyond my imagination! It contains magic that enriches the soil and promotes plant growth. The highest-tier magic enhances these effects, allowing plants to grow from seeds to harvest in an instant! It’s like a dream! There are also many spells for controlling earth and plants. Thanks to Sir Solm, we might be able to solve all the village’s problems!”
Mistia’s eyes gleamed with excitement.
“That’s amazing. It’s quite a useful power.”
Hearing Skia’s impressed remark, Solm muttered in disbelief.
“W-Wait a minute. Gilbert always called my magic ‘useless.’ And now you’re saying it’s ‘useful’…?”
Mistia and Skia exchanged glances. It seemed Gilbert had crushed Solm’s confidence beyond repair.
Solm looked down on himself, but he was completely mistaken.
(I have to find a way to restore Sir Solm’s confidence.)
With sincerity, Mistia spoke to him.
“Yes, it’s very useful! A magic that brings abundance—there’s nothing else like it!”
Her immediate and unwavering response left Solm unconvinced, and he protested.
“But earth magic is useless in combat. Even my earth walls only reach a child’s knee.”
“It may not be the best for fighting, but right now, what we need is your earth magic. …Why not give it a try?”
“…!”
Gilbert had never let Solm use his magic.
But Mistia, his new master, told him to use it—without hesitation.
Her words drew him in, like a butterfly unable to resist the sweet scent of a flower.
“Don’t complain if I disappoint you later.”
“Of course not.”
Seeing Solm reluctantly nod, Mistia let out a breath of relief. With his approval, she turned her gaze toward the ruined farmland in front of her.
(First, we need to do something about these rotten crops.)
