The Strongest Beast-Tamer (Transmigration)(GL) - Chapter 1
When Yi Xian opened her eyes, the world outside appeared shrouded in a hazy gray. It felt as though something heavy had cloaked the window. She struggled to sit up, wanting to see clearly what lay beyond, but in doing so, she unintentionally caught sight of her hand pressing against the bedboard. Instinctively, she rubbed the pad of her finger.
Her skin was delicate, her bones well-defined.
Yi Xian had once been an international mercenary. To approach her targets, she often adopted various disguises. Sometimes she was a doctor, other times a lawyer, or even a kindergarten teacher. When necessary, she used her looks to her advantage.
But her hands bore the evidence of a different past. As a child, she had done farm work and carried heavy loads. Later, she trained with firearms and weights. Her palms had developed calluses that even the luxurious lotion provided by Ivy could not entirely erase. Some faint, thin traces had always remained.
This hand was now so clean it made her question everything.
Yi Xian used every bit of strength she had just to reach the window. With each step, her chest throbbed with a dull ache, as if it had been struck by a hammer. Her earlier vision had not been mistaken. The world outside was blanketed in a layer of gray. She had no idea what it was. It was downright eerie.
Using the water in a jug placed on the table, Yi Xian caught sight of a face that seemed somewhat unfamiliar. The youthful contours resembled how she had looked at seventeen or eighteen years old. There was a seventy to eighty percent resemblance. She had a classic oval face, willow-shaped brows, and when her brows arched slightly, there was no sharpness, only an added touch of… cuteness. Her facial features were naturally beautiful, yet someone had smeared something strange across her face, making her look like a clown.
Seriously?
Was this really her?
Yi Xian’s chest ached with frustration. When she unconsciously rubbed it, the pain grew sharper. The throbbing sensation clawed at her nerves. She lifted her shirt and saw a dark purplish mark near her heart. She had no idea how it had gotten there.
Taking a deep breath, Yi Xian slowly pieced things together.
By all logic, she should be dead.
She had been blown away by an explosion while protecting her employer. Even if she had survived, her body should have been mangled beyond repair. There was no way her limbs would still be intact. Paired with the unfamiliar surroundings and the unfamiliar body, it all pointed to one thing.
She had died, yet lived again in another form.
While using water to wash away the dry, flour-like substance caked on her face, the door creaked open. The sound was faint, almost imperceptible, but Yi Xian caught it easily.
She turned swiftly. A tiny figure stood in the doorway, staring at her with wide blue eyes.
Indeed, those watery blue eyes were filled with fear, as if she had seen a ghost. The next moment, the room echoed with a piercing wail that shook the heavens and startled the dead. The little one turned and bolted, terrified beyond words.
Yi Xian remained silent.
She had not done a thing.
A few minutes later, the door burst open with a bang, slamming against the wall and bouncing back. A tall woman cradled the still-sniffling child in her arms. Her glare was fierce, her mouth drawn into a tight line. A chilling aura radiated from her entire being. If eyes could kill, Yi Xian would have been sliced into pieces by now. The child clung tightly to the woman’s neck, wailing loudly while sneaking peeks at Yi Xian between sobs.
The woman also had a pair of stunning blue eyes. Deep and sapphire-like, her gaze was as bottomless as a lake. Staring into them too long brought a sense of dizziness.
Perhaps it was only her imagination, but Yi Xian felt that this woman was extremely dangerous. She instinctively took a small step back in caution.
“If this happens again, I will not forgive you.”
The woman turned with the child in her arms and left without another word.
Yi Xian understood the warning, but she remained utterly confused. What on earth was going on?
This body was far too weak. Yi Xian had wanted to go outside and assess her surroundings, but after sitting for just a short while, her vision darkened. She lay back down and quickly drifted into unconsciousness. When she awoke, her head throbbed as though it were about to split open. Foreign memories surged into her mind all at once, accompanied by waves of nausea and dizziness.
Ugh!
Yi Xian groaned and sat up, cradling her head. It took a long while for the pain to subside. After shaking off the dizziness, she looked up and noticed two pairs of blue eyes, one large and one small, watching her with curiosity from the foot of the bed.
It was the same mother and daughter from earlier.
Now armed with fragmented memories, Yi Xian stared at them in shock. She especially focused on the little one, scrutinizing her face. According to those memories, this child… probably… had come from her own womb.
Yi Xian’s vision dimmed again. She gave up and flopped onto the bed, playing dead.
When morning came, the woman beside her rose with gentle movements. Yet the moment she got up, Yi Xian’s eyes snapped open. Not out of habit, but out of fear. The former owner of this body had done some despicable things. Yi Xian worried the woman might strangle her in her sleep.
She counted silently in her heart. After reaching five hundred, she felt certain the woman would not return. She crept like a thief to the side of the small bed and stared at the little one.
The child had an oval face. In sleep, she resembled the body’s original owner. When awake, she looked even more like the woman. Her brows were tightly furrowed, her lips pouting. She let out soft, puppy-like whimpers in her sleep, clearly having a bad dream.
According to the memories, the original owner had been abducted by human traffickers and sold to Kus City. She was abused, and eventually selected by this woman to serve as a slave. Though called a slave, her true role was to be a breeding tool for the beastmen. She had no freedom or choice, only obedience. When she realized she was pregnant with a beastman’s child, she tried various methods to abort it. None succeeded. All her resentment and fury were then directed at the woman and the little one.
Yi Xian gently reached out to soothe the child. Only when the furrows between her brows relaxed did Yi Xian let out a quiet sigh. Such a lovely girl, how could the original have treated her so cruelly?
Soon after, Yi Xian was kicked out of the room.
The reason was simple. When the child woke and saw her, she burst into tears. Her cries drew others. Whenever Yi Xian came near, the wails grew so piercing they threatened to blow off the roof. Yi Xian had no choice but to step away. Inside, a strange female beastman was gently comforting the child. That moment gave Yi Xian the opportunity to look around and finally understand that the gray haze outside was actually an energy shield.
If her memory served her right, these things were quite expensive.
After Yi Xian had been trafficked here, she had overheard others talking. The beastmen were divided into many races, and there were plenty of conflicts among them. The energy shields were designed to prevent aerial tribe ambushes and, more importantly, to protect their young.
Beastmen did not reproduce as easily as humans. On the contrary, their birthrates declined year after year. One child could mean the rise of an entire race. In their desperation, beastmen had set their sights on human females.
Where there was demand, there was exploitation. Mass abductions and trafficking began to target ordinary women.
Unfortunately, the original owner had been among them, merely an ordinary human woman.
Yi Xian could feel the strange, judgmental stares from everyone around her. She took a deep breath and cursed inwardly. The original owner had been a complete fool. It was bad enough to be a black-hearted lotus, but she had even failed to maintain her disguise. Once her secret was exposed, she could not handle the scorn and had rushed into the Komo Forest, where she had nearly been killed by a wild beast.
To be precise, the original owner had indeed died. Otherwise, why else would Yi Xian be here?
Yi Xian walked back slowly, her mind focused on a single concern, which was how she could clear her name. Life ahead would not be easy if she failed.
