Episode 107: Decisive Battle
A particularly large reaction appeared on Analyze. It was a reaction that hadn’t been there earlier. It seemed that the previously hazy magical response had turned into a large mass. Most likely, the Water Spirit was at the center of it. It seemed to have noticed this location. It looked like it had entered a battle-ready state.
“It looks like it’s here.”
“Alright, let’s go without letting our guard down.”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
Ardan and Jill drew their swords. I focused my magical power. I used Water Tornado, targeting the area with the large magical reaction at its center.
I expanded the range so I could definitely pull it out. It used more magical power. But that was still much better than failing.
“Water Tornado!”
I cast the spell toward the reaction ahead. A large whirlpool formed on the sea surface. Around the raft, thanks to Mild Wave, there were no waves. But around that, huge waves and water spray rose up.
The whirlpool gradually started to rise into the sky. Ardan, Jill, and Elise were all staring at it wide-eyed.
The whirl of water burst in the air. What came out from inside was a huge two-legged Fishman with fins on various parts of its body. In its hand, it held a large trident. Despite its huge body, it landed lightly on the raft.
(Note: Aquaman, is that you?!)
This is bad. If the situation turns against it, it’ll immediately escape into the water. We’ll have to interfere skillfully to prevent that. We can’t take our eyes off it.
From the expression on its face, it was clear that it held hostility toward us. Looking closely, something like a black haze was rising from its body. Probably the effect of being controlled by a magic stone. That magic stone… seemed to be stabbed into its back. We have to do something about that.
“Pii-chan, are you sure that’s the Water Spirit?”
“…I believe it probably is. The magic stone stabbed into its back looks to be the same one that was once stabbed into my knee.”
It looked like even Pii-chan was confused—meaning the Water Spirit had become something completely different. It might not even have consciousness anymore. Solving this through negotiation doesn’t seem possible.
The Fishman confirmed our presence and came charging at us with a speed that didn’t match its appearance. Ardan stepped forward to meet it. He parried the thrust of the trident skillfully with his shield and drove his sword into the creature’s arm.
Its trident attack missed. The Fishman lost its balance and took the hit—but paid it no mind and swung its trident sideways to strike again. Ardan blocked that with his shield. A metallic clang echoed from the collision. The Fishman immediately jumped back.
The wound on its arm started healing. It seemed it could use healing magic. This might turn into a long battle.
“As expected from a huge body, its attacks are heavy. It might be bad to take too many of them in a row.”
“Then I’ll attack at the same time to divert its attention.”
Jill said that. It didn’t seem possible to attack the Fishman by exploiting an opening. Now that I think about it, we focused too much on creating a flat surface and forgot to prepare places to hide. That’s something we’ll have to address in the future.
“I’ll support you too.”
When the distance between the two of them and the enemy is close, I can’t use powerful magic. I have no choice but to use lower-power spells. But it’s still better than nothing. As Jill began his attack, I fired Stone Arrow.
My attack was just a decoy. Jill’s blow would be far heavier.
The Fishman spun its trident and blocked Stone Arrow. While it was distracted, Jill closed in. It blocked Jill’s attack with its trident. But in that time, Ardan had moved into close range.
He must have thought slashing with a sword wouldn’t do enough damage. In his hand was a mace. With that, he could attack with force over an area.
A full-power blow struck the Fishman’s torso. From the looks of it, the damage seemed significant—but the Fishman didn’t scream. The attack had to be effective. But it didn’t seem to feel pain. It struck at Ardan with the shaft of its trident. But he blocked that with his shield.
Maybe it thought being attacked by both of them was dangerous—so the Fishman swung its trident wildly and leapt back. A follow-up Stone Arrow pierced it there.
After the series of attacks, it seemed like the Fishman had taken a decent amount of damage. However, those wounds quickly disappeared like nothing had happened.
“This is bad.”
“Yeah. This’ll go on forever.”
“We have to do something about its healing magic. Before it runs out of magical power—let’s use Energy Drain to absorb its magic.”
If it runs out of magic power, it won’t be able to use magic. The damage we gave it won’t be healed. And if I can pour that absorbed magic into Pii-chan, we’ll gain another fighting force.
“What should we do then?”
“Somehow, I want you to stop its movement. It looks like I can’t use it on a moving target.”
“Sounds pretty difficult. But I guess we’ve got no choice.”
It would be good if Lilia could assist us, but doing that while calming the waves might be too much? At first, I thought about having Elise use Mild Wave. But I gave up on that idea because I wasn’t confident in her magic power.
The Fishman came charging at us again, and the two went out to meet it. I also gave support while looking for an opening. But its movements didn’t stop. As expected, I probably have to use magic to stop its feet.
I’ll use a stopping spell while also using Energy Drain. I have no choice but to try.
Just as I thought that, Jill cut off one of the Fishman’s legs. As expected of a mithril weapon, the sharpness was incredible. The Fishman lost its balance. But it still thrust its spear toward Jill. Ardan blocked it with his shield.
But here, something unexpected happened. The trident pierced a hole in the shield. Fortunately, the spear didn’t go all the way through the shield. And Ardan wasn’t injured either—but we found out that Ardan’s shield couldn’t completely block that spear. From now on, the Fishman’s attacks would likely focus on thrusting.
“Stone Hand!”
A hand made of stone grabbed the Fishman. But the Fishman tried to forcefully shake it off. Already, the earthen hand was creaking. It didn’t look like it would be able to hold it for long. I hurried closer and used Energy Drain.
“Energy Drain!”
To further gain the upper hand, the two launched attacks. But the enemy also desperately resisted. It destroyed the Stone Hand and swung its spear around. Of course, we couldn’t stay in that spot and had to take some distance—and right away, it began healing its severed leg.
We managed to absorb a little of its magic power. But it still seemed to have plenty left.
However, thanks to the absorbed magic, we could reduce the magic drain on our side. With this, while using Energy Drain, I should be able to use a higher-level spell to bind the Fishman.
“Ardan, Jill, I want you to stop its legs again. This time, I’ll seal its movements with stronger magic.”
“Understood. It’s frustrating, but with our strength alone, it seems we can’t completely stop its movements.”
“Yeah. That spear is better than my shield. I can’t let my guard down.”
“When we get back, we’ll have to have a mithril shield made.”
For the third time, the Fishman charged at us. As expected, it thrust with its spear. But if it’s a single-pointed attack, it’s not that hard to dodge. They skillfully blocked the attacks with shield and sword.
Maybe wary of the previous movement, when Jill moved, it immediately showed a stance to pull back the spear.
Even so, Jill attacked without hesitation. The Fishman blocked it with the spear held sideways in both hands. A loud clang rang out. The spear blocked Jill’s attack without breaking. That spear—what material is it made of? To block an attack from a mithril weapon like that, I don’t think it’s something easily done.
But now, an opening appeared at its feet. Not missing that chance, Ardan struck the Fishman’s leg with his mace. A nasty sound like a bone breaking rang out. The Fishman lost its balance.
“Gaia Hand!”
A hand made of gray rock firmly grabbed the Fishman. Its surface was smooth and had no cracks. Just like before, it tried to shake it off with brute force—but this time, it didn’t budge at all.
“Energy Drain!”
I hurriedly ran over and used the spell. All attacks aimed at me were blocked by Ardan and Jill. After a moment, the Fishman began to let out strange, incomprehensible sounds. It seemed the two’s attacks were finally starting to work.
