Episode 109: Triumphant Return
We dismantled the large raft floating on the sea. Building it had been difficult. But taking it apart seemed easy.
Of course, we recovered the spear the Fishman had been using. Once things settle down, I want to check what materials it’s made from.
“Let’s turn part of the raft into a boat. That way, we won’t need to go all the way to the port to call for a ship.”
“Oh my, it looks like that won’t be necessary. A ship is heading this way.”
When I checked with Analyze, there was definitely a ship’s presence. And not just one. Are they here to pick us up?
“They must’ve thought the sea was safe now, since the dark sea is gone.”
“I see. The dark sea that had reached the port town of Suiren disappeared, and they realized we had defeated the Water Spirit.”
“That must be it. Now we don’t have to worry about the way back.”
Ardan smiled happily. Maybe he was worried about the boat Lilia and I were going to make? Sure, we’ve never actually built one before. So I didn’t know how it’d turn out………. Wait, are we not trusted?
“Well then, let’s clean up before they arrive. It’ll be good practice for Fel’s wood-element magic too.”
“Please go easy on me.”
Thanks to assimilating with Kagetora, I could now use “wood-element magic”, a type of spirit magic I hadn’t been able to use until now. Lilia was surprised — I was surprised too. From now on, I’ll have to learn wood magic from Lilia.
“First, it’s about image! Wood-element magic doesn’t use weird spells or anything. It’s all about spirit and image!”
“That’s ridiculous. Lilia, you *were* chanting something, weren’t you?”
“That was just for atmosphere. Doesn’t it sound like I’m using some amazing magic that way?”
“I see. So it seems.”
It seems wood-element magic is a ridiculous kind of magic. Probably the type that turns your imagination into form. Will I be okay? I’m starting to lose confidence.
“First, imagine the wood disappearing. Shoop! Then bam!”
“Huh?”
And so, while receiving the gracious wood-element magic lesson from Professor Lilia, we continued dismantling the raft. Pii-chan and Kagetora gave advice here and there as if supporting us.
Just like Professor Lilia, though, they weren’t very helpful.
“A ship is here!”
Eliza, who had been on alert using Analyze, shouted. The raft had become quite small and unreliable. Because of that, it rocked violently with every wave.
Maybe it had become uncomfortable. We had been so focused on learning the magic while dismantling it that we hadn’t noticed.
To let them know our location, we shot fire into the sky. Noticing that, the ship came rushing toward us.
“You defeated the Water Spirit, didn’t you! The sea got brighter, so I figured that must be it. As expected of our country’s proud Platinum-Rank adventurers!”
“We’ll lower the ladder right away. Please board!”
“That huge raft ended up this tiny… It must’ve been quite the fierce battle.”
Looks like some people are misunderstanding. But I decided not to correct them. During that time, I hid Pii-chan and Kagetora. It would be bad if their true identities were revealed. We had to make it seem like the Water Spirit was defeated and disappeared.
Of course, I’d already explained this to Kagetora. It didn’t seem unhappy about it.
Once everyone boarded the ship, we cleaned up the remaining raft. With that, the sea was restored with no trash left behind. The ship carrying us headed straight for the port town of Suiren.
—
At the port, the captain of the Eleonora, some nobles, and the townspeople were there to welcome us. Some had even come from Mizuna.
According to what I heard, it seems Mizuna was passed over. The waves were rough, but thanks to our prior information, they hadn’t gone out to sea. So there were no damages. The mayor had sent a letter of thanks and some gifts. Looks like we caused them some concern.
“As expected from the party of Platinum Rank adventurers who calmed the Fire Spirit. When we return to the capital, I’ll make sure to report this to His Majesty the King.”
The person who seemed to have the highest status among the nobles aboard the Eleonora said that. The captain heard it too and nodded in agreement. It seemed the captain would report it together with him.
Lucky. Now we were spared the trouble of reporting it ourselves. Well, even if we were the only ones, the chances of us reporting it were pretty low. It’s not like someone requested us to do it. And being tied up for days making reports and undergoing interviews would be a hassle.
After that, the magistrate of the port town of Suiren came to express his thanks. Without us, the towns along the coast might have suffered devastating damage. Since it looked like they were holding a celebration, we decided to participate without hesitation.
It seemed many people had noticed that the dark sea had come from somewhere and the sea had become rough. Big waves had reached the port too, and it looked like some buildings were damaged because of that.
However, thanks to the prior notice to evacuate, there were no injuries or deaths.
The story that we were the ones who calmed the sea quickly spread through the town. And many people gathered to catch a glimpse of the heroes who had saved the town.
Honestly, it was overwhelming. More people came than when we defeated the Water Dragon, or even the Fire Spirit. Because of that, we couldn’t relax at all that day.
After that, we spent our time inside the Eleonora until the ship was ready to depart. If we went outside, we’d get swarmed. There was no way we could walk around freely.
“Being a hero isn’t easy, huh.”
“Right? I never thought we wouldn’t be able to go outside. If it were just us, we could fly through the sky and sneak out without anyone noticing.”
“But if we did that, it’d be unfair to Ardan and the others.”
And so, we all stayed on the ship together. But that ends today. Tomorrow, the Eleonora will leave this port and head to the home country. Back to the Kingdom of Fortune.
“I hope we can return without anything happening. We won’t get attacked by a Kraken again, right?”
“Probably…”
Talking about these things tends to invite trouble. Lilia, don’t say ominous stuff like that.
“It’s fine, Boss lady. Even if something like that shows up, Aniki will crush it easily.”
“Ohh, as expected of my lord. I am in awe.”
No, I haven’t done anything yet… Their loyalty as Spirits is so strong it’s troubling. If I ever fail, they might immediately lose faith in me. Ah, I think I’m starting to get a stomachache.
The next day, the weather was clear. The Eleonora, loaded with people and cargo, departed from the port town of Suiren. A large crowd had come to see us off at the harbor.
“Hope we can get back without any problems.”
“Jill, saying stuff like that feels like you’re calling in bad luck. So maybe don’t.”
Elise looked annoyed. Maybe I made the same kind of face when Lilia said something similar to me.
“Agreed. Lilia said something just like Jill, so now I feel even more uneasy.”
Leaving behind Jill, whose eyes sparkled for some reason, we returned to our rooms.
For the next few days, everything went smoothly. But at one point, a white Kraken-like creature with a triangular head, not a round one, attacked us.
Of course, we were sent out to deal with it and defeated the attacking monster. It seemed no one had seen a creature like it before. And there were rumors it might be a new species. Maybe the Kraken’s power had weakened, and other creatures were starting to come around? It looks like it’ll still be a long time before the seas become truly safe.
While having those slightly hectic days, our voyage proceeded smoothly. And finally, we could see the continent we were heading to. After hearing the ship’s announcement, everyone went up to the deck.
“I can see it! That’s definitely the port town of Beaumont!”
“Looks like it. That house with the flat roof is unmistakable. We’re back!”
Lilia also looked happy. Once we returned to the royal capital, we could finally return to the inn that we used as our base. At the inn, a cypress-wood bath was waiting for us.
Just like many others, we stayed on deck and watched the approaching land until we arrived.
