Episode 11: Lilia’s Reminiscence
We first met when he was just five years old. Back then, he wasn’t called “Fel” but “Alphonse Guiram.”
It was he who freed me from the magic tome in which I had been sealed. The tome had belonged to his mother. And in her final moments, she entrusted it to her son.
After hearing his story, I realized he was in a very dire situation. If things continued as they were, he would be killed. I had to do something.
Without hesitation, I made a contract with him. That way, I could always be by his side.
His magical power was still weak. But he had enough talent to break my seal. In five—no, ten years, he would surely become a great mage.
Until then, I had to protect him.
But that fear turned out to be unfounded. He absorbed my teachings without resistance, mastering spells one after another. And with that, his magical power grew at an astonishing rate. In just three years, he had already become a formidable mage.
“Avenging my mother won’t bring anyone happiness. It’d be much better to leave this house and be free.”
“But you could destroy that rotten father of yours if you wanted to. You have no ambition.”
“I won’t do that.”
His brows furrowed. And he lowered his eyes, looking troubled.
From what I had gathered, it was clear that his mother had been poisoned by that vile excuse of a father—all so he could make his concubine’s son the next head of House Guiram.
Humans are truly foolish. If only divine punishment would befall such selfish creatures.
“Lilia, you’re thinking of something weird again, aren’t you?”
“I’m not. I’m just frustrated that you’re not being acknowledged.”
“There’s no need to care about that. I’ve gotten used to playing the role of a failure. I’ll be kicked out of this house soon enough.”
He smiled as he spoke. But in reality, it took ten years from our first meeting before he was finally cast out.
I spent those years in hiding, teaching him magic, watching as others treated him with cold disdain.
Of course, I couldn’t just sit idly by—I caused plenty of mischief. Never anything obvious, though. I’d send gusts of wind to scatter the laundry, make the weeds in the garden grow faster, or even blow away a visiting old man’s wig. No one ever suspected me.
And then, the day finally came. No one stopped him from being disinherited. In fact, they looked relieved.
It all went according to plan. Yet, something about it still didn’t sit right with me.
He had done nothing wrong. How could they treat him like this?
Without a word, he signed the magical contract and left the house. No one followed—except for me.
I wished that wretched house would crumble to the ground.
With what little money we had, we boarded a carriage to the neighboring country. This was a decision we had made long ago.
Once free, we would go to the Kingdom of Fortune and become adventurers.
The Kingdom of Fortune was a land of diversity and freedom—a perfect place for us.
“Lilia, you’re thinking of something weird again, aren’t you?”
“Yeah. I was just wondering if I should erase that house from existence.”
“Don’t. We’re finally free. I don’t need anything more.”
“Oh, right. The contract said you can’t use your old name anymore. That means you need a new one.”
“What should it be?”
He crossed his arms, thinking deeply.
If it were up to me, I’d choose “Fel”. That name once belonged to a legendary Fairy King. It would suit him perfectly.
“I think I’ll go with ‘Fel’. What do you think?”
He smiled a little shyly, and my heart skipped a beat.
Did he just read my mind? I had heard that a contract could sometimes connect thoughts… Was that happening now?
“Huh? I—I think it’s a good name. But why did you choose it?”
“No reason. Just a feeling.”
“Just a feeling, huh…”
At that moment, an unpleasant chill crawled down my back. This sensation—it was undeniable proof that the darkness of human nature had surfaced. Someone was targeting us… no, targeting Fel’s life. They needed to be erased.
“Do you think they’ll attack while we’re riding the carriage?”
“You noticed? Hmm… I doubt they’d make a move in a place where others could see.”
I whispered directly into Fel’s ear. I was making sure only he could hear me. Of course, I was still invisible.
“That’s a relief. I’d rather not have innocent people get caught up in this because of me.”
The carriage reached its destination for the day—a fairly large inn town. Naturally, we didn’t have money for a room. Our plan was to keep transferring from one carriage to another until we somehow made it to the Kingdom of Fortune.
“Alright, what’s the plan?”
“Let’s take care of the ones tailing us, then fly to the next town using magic. The sun will be setting soon, so we won’t stand out.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
We set off toward the next town on foot. As we walked through the forest, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, our pursuers finally made their move.
They all wore black hoods. From the way they held their knives, they were clearly professionals.
I dealt with their lookout first—the one lurking further behind, watching us. Manipulating the plants, I dragged him underground and buried him alive. No evidence left behind.
As for the ones charging at us, Fel handled them before I even needed to lift a finger. With a swift wind spell, he cut them all in half.
In the blink of an eye, five assassins were reduced to corpses. Without hesitation, Fel used earth magic to bury them. It left no trace of the fight. His magic was precise, efficient—downright beautiful.
The ground returned to normal. It was as if nothing had ever happened. No one would ever know a battle took place here.
“I don’t feel as guilty as I thought I would. Maybe I’m not human anymore.”
“That’s not true. It was kill or be killed—self-defense. That’s why you don’t feel anything.”
Fel let out a dry laugh. It was over. He should just leave it be. But there was something lonely about that laugh…
“I hope you’re right. Anyway, it’s getting dark. Let’s fly. Lilia, hold on tight.”
“What are you talking about? I have wings, I can fly on my own.”
“Oh, right.”
“But I’m still gonna cling to you!”
I wrapped my arms around Fel’s chest.
For some reason, being like this made me feel at ease.
I wonder why?
