Episode 15: It Might Be Best to Check
Sancho-san’s desperate expression was overwhelming. So I decided to at least hear him out. He was already in tears.
“I have a beloved wife. Like me, she was poisoned. Fortunately, the antidote worked well on me, and I only suffer from numbness and pain in my right arm. But my wife… she became paralyzed on one side and has been bedridden ever since.”
If they were poisoned at the same time, then someone must have poisoned them. Sancho-san didn’t seem like an ex-adventurer at all. He even had a bit of a belly.
“I don’t mind helping. Does she live in Everan?”
“Y-You’ll do it?! Yes, yes, exactly! We live in Everan because we can get medicine there.”
He rushed over and grabbed both of my hands. It was clear he had been doing everything he could for his wife.
“Lilia, is this okay with you?”
“Of course. But on one condition—no one can know that we can use Extra Heal. If that condition isn’t met, I refuse.”
Lilia pointed firmly at him. Both Sancho-san and the other man with him nodded silently. Lilia seemed to have decided that Extra Heal was a “highly conspicuous spell”.
I needed to be careful about using it too. I should cast it silently when necessary. Silent casting consumes more mana and reduces the spell’s effectiveness. So I didn’t want to rely on it too much. But in this case, I had no choice.
The agreement was settled. Sancho-san offered to pay, but I refused. I treated his silence as a form of payment instead. Honestly, if I just wanted to make money, opening a healing clinic would be faster.
On the way back to my room, I stepped onto the balcony.
“Lilia, it seems like using Extra Heal is a bad idea. What’s going on?”
“I have no idea. It looks like the magic system changed drastically while I was sealed away. We should find a place to research magic.”
“Yeah. There might be other spells besides Extra Heal that we shouldn’t use carelessly.”
We nodded in agreement and returned to our room as if nothing had happened. If word got out, things could become troublesome.

From the next day onward, Sancho-san’s attitude toward us completely changed. Even though we were just adventurers and had no right to ride in his carriage, he kept insisting that we should.
Razor-san eventually found it odd and asked what had happened. I managed to convince him by saying, “I just thanked him for the meal, and he took a liking to me.”
That wasn’t a lie. I also told Sancho-san, “I appreciate the sentiment, but this is part of our test as adventurers. So please leave us be.” That finally got him to back off.
Well, aside from the fact that he kept bringing us snacks at every rest stop.
I felt like we were being treated as a pair of gluttons. Not that I minded.
As we continued our journey, I sensed monsters nearby. On either side of the road, grass had grown waist-high.
“Monsters are approaching. Stay on guard just in case.”
“You noticed? Matilda, what do you think?”
“Yeah, there are three of them.”
Matilda-san might have been using Analyze as well. Though, her range seemed limited—she hadn’t noticed the next group coming from behind.
“There are four more following them.”
“Would that make them Grass Wolves?”
“Their speed matches, so probably.”
As we talked, we got into position for an ambush. As long as we avoided a surprise attack, we wouldn’t be at a disadvantage. The rustling of grass grew louder.
Razor-san and Liner had already drawn their swords.
Two fighters in the front, five in the back, including Lilia. Was the balance okay? Well, I could just provide magical support. I was the only man among the backline. Kind of embarrassing?
A massive Grass Wolf lunged out. The two frontline fighters easily knocked it back. Matilda-san immediately followed up with a spell, piercing the beast. The last one was finished off by Bales’ bow.
Lilia and I didn’t even get a turn.
Next time, for sure.
Not long after, the next group of monsters leaped out. This time, Lilia and I fired Stone Arrow spells at the exact moment the Grass Wolves appeared.
Dozens of Stone Arrows rained down on the Grass Wolves striking them all at once. In an instant, they turned into magic stones.
“You two are terrifying…”
Razor-san muttered, while Matilda-san shook her head. I had tried to hold back. But apparently, it wasn’t enough. Next time, I’d ask Matilda-san to show me what a normal Stone Arrow looked like.
“As expected of adventurers from Colibri Town. You belong to one of the top five Adventurers’ Guilds in the kingdom, after all.”
Sancho-san spoke in admiration. It seemed we would be taking a break here. Colibri Town really did seem to be one of the top adventurer hubs in the kingdom. We had made the right choice in joining its guild.
After collecting the scattered magic stones, we sat down nearby and drank some water. The weather was nice today. Better than rain, but sweating was a downside.
During our break, my Analyze detected something.
“Someone is hiding in the bushes over there. They’re probably watching us.”
“You’re right. What are they doing alone out here? …Looks like they’re wearing green. At a glance, it’s hard to tell where they are.”
Lilia had jumped up to the height of the carriage for a better view before quickly dropping back down. She must have been careful not to let them see her.
“What do you think?”
Liner asked, and I gave my opinion. Probably the same conclusion everyone else had reached. Liner must have realized it too but didn’t want to admit it.
“They’re a scout from a bandit group.”
“I knew it…”
“Of course. Who else would be lurking alone in a dangerous grassy area, wearing clothes that blend into the surroundings?”
Razor-san concluded the discussion. Liner, Luciana, and Bales all looked pale. They weren’t mentally prepared yet.
“We still have time before we actually encounter the bandits. Get ready by then.”
“Hesitate, and you’ll die.”
Razor-san and Matilda-san made sure to drill that into them. The three of them groaned in response.
“Razor-san, is it safe for the scout to be hiding in a place with Grass Wolves? Wouldn’t they get attacked?”
“Hmm, Grass Wolves have a keen sense of smell.”
“A keen sense of smell?”
“Probably means they stink. So bad that even Grass Wolves don’t want to go near them.”
Hearing Razor-san’s words, Lilia’s face scrunched up like an old woman’s. She must have imagined the smell. I was probably making the same face. I’d rather not get too close to them.
We informed Sancho-san about the scout hiding in the bushes. He was surprised but seemed reassured that we had noticed in advance.
“If we turn back now, we’ll have to camp out overnight. Which would be even more dangerous. So, I’d like to keep moving forward. What do you think?”
Sancho-san asked Razor-san, our temporary party leader.
“Let’s keep going. Seeing our numbers, they might not attack. Besides, the main bandit group likely isn’t here yet—they’re still scouting us out.”
“I see. So, they might be gathering information now and preparing for an attack tomorrow. In that case, we’ll keep moving.”
Sancho-san nodded and gave the order to depart toward the next town.
In the end, we reached the town without encountering a bandit attack that day.
