Episode 17: The Commercial City of Everan
Lilia and I rushed straight toward the attacked caravan. Thanks to Luciana’s magic, the bandits had stopped moving. This gave us the chance to handle the situation more easily.
“We’ve come to help! We’re not enemies!”
I shouted just in case. Behind me, Matilda-san’s Fireball exploded in the middle of the bandits. It was setting nearby grass ablaze. Was that okay?
With that on my mind, I focused on treating the wounded. Some injuries were severe. But fortunately, no one had died yet. The injured were surprised at my healing but thanked me before returning to fight the bandits.
Of course, I didn’t heal any of the fallen bandits. They were left as they were.
“Fel, there are no more wounded. Let’s support the others!”
“Yeah. Let’s take out the archers in the back. Water Arrow!”
“Water Ball!”
A powerful jet of water pierced through bodies. While a massive sphere of water crushed its target. The impact sent a burst of water into the surroundings. It created a heavy downpour. It seemed Lilia had planned for fire suppression as well.
“That’s a good idea. Water Ball!”
“Oh my, you two have some useful magic. Saves us the trouble of putting out fires.”
Matilda-san continued casting fire magic one after another. The enemies struck by her spells were reduced to charcoal. I see—she used fire magic to make cleanup easier. That actually made sense.
Liner and the others had also taken down several bandits. The tide of battle had completely turned. Then, Razor-san joined in.
“Hey, hey, looks like it’s almost over. Leave some for me!”
Without hesitation, he cut through the remaining bandits. He swiftly took down even their fleeing leader.
The air was thick with the smell of burnt flesh. Following Matilda-san’s example, we finished off the remaining enemies with Fireball.
We used earth magic to clean up the scorched ground. We made sure travelers wouldn’t be disturbed by the aftermath. Though, with some of the grass missing, they’d probably realize something had happened here.
“Well done, Liner, Luciana, Bales. You’re now full-fledged adventurers. Our job isn’t just fighting monsters. If you want to move up, you’ll have to take on tough requests too.”
Razor-san was already wrapping things up. Wasn’t it too early for that? We still had a way to go before reaching Everan. But the three of them looked satisfied, as if they had truly accomplished something.
As we talked, Sancho-san and his group caught up from behind. Seeing everything settled, they let out a sigh of relief.
“As expected of adventurers from the town of Colibri. I didn’t think you’d even take care of the cleanup.”
“This much is only natural. More importantly, we need to check on the caravan that was attacked.”
Following Razor-san’s instructions, we confirmed the injuries and damages again. Since the horses were still harnessed to the wagons, it seemed the bandits had intended to use them.
There were no casualties, and the wagons weren’t significantly damaged. The caravan’s owner thanked us and said they’d arrange for our reward through Everan’s Adventurers’ Guild. They also promised to report the incident for us.
That was lucky—we wouldn’t have to deal with the guild’s tedious paperwork.
There might be more bandits ahead. So, the rescued caravan decided to follow behind us.
They hadn’t hired adventurers for protection, which led to this crisis. They mentioned that from now on, they’d always hire guards.
Money can’t buy a life. But maybe money can save one.
“Well, that was lucky.”
“Razor-san, getting attacked by bandits isn’t lucky.”
“Liner’s right. Only you would be happy about getting dragged into trouble.”
“Oh? I actually feel lucky too. Looks like we’re getting a bigger payout than I expected.”
“Even you, Matilda-san? You two are alike.”
Everan was just ahead. Now that things had settled down, we chatted as we walked—though I kept Analyze active, just in case.
“By the way, I’ve been wondering… what exactly is the relationship between Razor-san and Matilda-san?”
Luciana was perhaps excited from her first bandit hunt. She asked the question directly. No one had asked it during our journey so far. The moment she did, silence fell, and all attention turned to the two of them.
“What do you mean, ‘what kind of relationship’? We’re married, as you can see.”
“Married!?”
“The age gap—how does that even work!?”
Liner and I shouted in surprise. This was an answer we hadn’t expected. We had assumed she was his daughter or something. Lilia, however, didn’t seem particularly shocked.
“Matilda is a half-elf, after all. I don’t know exactly how old she is, but she’s definitely older than she looks.”
“As expected of Lilia-chan. You noticed.”
“Of course. I knew from the start.”
The two of them exchanged knowing smiles. There was probably something about them that only non-human races could recognize. Matilda-san’s ears weren’t pointed. But since she was a half-elf, that explained it.
After that, Luciana and Bales eagerly questioned Matilda-san about how she maintained her youthful appearance.
Half a day passed. Finally, we spotted our destination—the commercial city of Everan.
As the scenery suddenly opened up, a massive stone wall came into view. It looked about three times the height of an average adult.
“We’re almost at Everan! Keep it up, everyone!”
Razor-san shouted to motivate us. But honestly, the one who seemed most eager to arrive was Razor-san himself. Matilda-san lamented, “I wonder if he’s getting withdrawal symptoms?”
Withdrawal symptoms? I wondered for a moment. But it turned out she was talking about alcohol. Apparently, Razor-san abstained from drinking while on escort missions.
With our arrival in Everan, our job was complete.
Razor-san received the completion signature from Sancho-san. And we were about to head to the Adventurers’ Guild to claim our reward.
But before that, Sancho-san approached me.
“Fel-san, you must visit my trading company. I would’ve taken you there right away, but the guild requires all members to be present for the report.”
His eyes pleaded with me. Seeing his desperate expression, Razor-san, Liner, and the others cast curious glances our way.
“Don’t worry. I’ll definitely come.”
Even then, he still looked concerned. So he handed me a map of Everan. The location of the Sancho Trading Company was clearly marked. With a look of regret, Sancho-san and his caravan disappeared into the city.
“You two sure got close.”
“Well… a lot happened.”
Razor-san remarked. And I couldn’t help but reply with a wry smile. Seeing how desperate Sancho-san had been, I couldn’t blame Razor-san for being suspicious.
With lingering curiosity about the situation, we made our way to the Adventurers’ Guild.
