Episode 18: The Sancho Trading Company
The Adventurers’ Guild building was smaller than I had expected. In Colibri, the guild had an inn attached and was quite spacious. But things seemed to be different in the commercial city of Everan.
Inside, a few people who looked like adventurers were enjoying drinks at the bar section. There were also areas selling magical potions and consumables. As expected of a commercial city, even the Adventurers’ Guild was fully committed to making money.
Looking at the request board, I saw that almost all the requests were for escorts. That must mean there were many merchants traveling in and out of this large city. However, the fact that these requests remained at this hour probably meant they were the troublesome ones. I had no interest in taking them.
While we were glancing around, Razor-san walked straight to the reception counter. As expected, the receptionists here were all quite beautiful.
While Razor-san was reporting our request completion, we took a seat at an empty table. Just as I was wondering if I should order a drink, Razor-san returned with a receptionist in tow. It seemed like they were here for identity confirmation.
We each stated our names. And the receptionist wrote something down on her board.
“There really is a Fairy! I’m surprised. You don’t see them in Everan, so she might stand out a little.”
“Is that so? Thank you for the valuable information.”
As for the reward for taking down the bandit group, it would take some time to process. In other words, we would have to stay in Everan until we received it. After confirming our identities, the receptionist went back to retrieve the payment for our escort job.
Liner had a smirk on his face. He was clearly excited. Half-joking, I asked,
“Looks like we’re getting more money than expected.”
“Yeah, seems like it. Maybe we can afford to relax a little now? So, Fel, Fairies apparently stand out here. What are you gonna do?”
Liner asked a simple question. But there was no real issue.
“No worries. Lilia can make herself invisible. While we’re in Everan, I’ll have to ask her to stay hidden.”
“Well, I suppose there’s no other choice. But that’s probably for the best. We’re only staying for a few days, after all. No need to spread awareness of my existence.”
Just as Lilia said, we had no intention of making Everan our base. The guild’s request board was filled with escort jobs. They might be lucrative, but dealing with clients was a hassle. So I wasn’t interested.
Besides, taking those requests would mean being bound to them, losing our freedom. And with the same type of request over and over, I’d get bored quickly.
As we chatted, the receptionist returned with our payment. The money had already been split into three equal parts. And three pouches were placed on the table. Each pouch contained ten small gold coins.
“Alright, that wraps up our job. Don’t forget to collect the reward for taking down the bandits. With that, we’re dismissed.”
Razor-san cheerfully announced before leaving with Matilda-san. He had been to Everan a few times before. He was probably heading straight to a tavern. Since Matilda-san didn’t stop him, she must have decided to let him indulge for the day.
“Alright, let’s go find an inn. I wonder how much lodging costs in Everan. I can’t even guess.”
“There should be some reasonably priced inns. But those are probably already taken.”
“No doubt. Guess we’ll have to search diligently.”
With that, we parted ways with Liner’s group. Now, it was just me and Lilia. As soon as the others left, Lilia disappeared, so to anyone watching. I looked like I was alone.
“Alright then, Lilia, let’s head to Sancho-san’s trading company.”
“Yes. From the map, it’s west of here. It’s on a main street, so we should find it quickly.”
“Do you think there’s a district where nobles live?”
“Everan is bigger than Colibri. And since there aren’t any dangerous monsters nearby, it’s relatively safe. So, there’s a good chance of that.”
“Then we should be careful when moving around.”
Talking about such things, we stepped outside. We could have walked. But we spotted a horse-drawn carriage making rounds within the city. Since the opportunity was there, we decided to take a ride.
The carriage moved smoothly along Everan’s stone-paved roads. The streets were well-maintained. And through the window, I could see people of various races passing by.
As expected of Fortune, the multi-racial nation. Just watching the people here is entertaining.
The carriage continued westward. It seemed to be moving in a circular route centered around the grand cathedral located in the heart of the city. After traveling a fair distance west, we got off and checked the map to make our way toward the Sancho Trading Company.
Since Sancho-san was a major merchant, his trading company was probably large as well. It shouldn’t be too hard to find.
“Look, Fel! Could that be it?”
“Looks like it. Is that entire building part of it? It looks like it’s at least five stories tall.”
A grand brick building stood prominently along the main street. I was surprised that such a massive structure could be built in such a prime location. Sancho-san must have made a great deal of money.
Perhaps even nobles shopped at his store. If that were the case, I needed to be careful.
But why would someone as wealthy as Sancho-san take the risk of personally traveling to Colibri to purchase magic stones? Wouldn’t it be safer to send someone else?
As we headed toward the Sancho Trading Company, I peeked into the stores lined up along the street.
Many of them carried reasonably priced goods. However, it seemed that items from the royal capital were easily available here. And there were plenty of products I had never seen before. Of course, they were expensive. No matter how much money I had now, buying everything that caught my eye would bankrupt me in no time.
Sancho-san’s shop felt a bit unwelcoming for adventurers. Since he had been purchasing magic stones, I had a rough idea of what kind of store it would be. It seemed to specialize in magical tools and other high-end items.
The display window showcased magic tools I had never seen before. A sign labeled them as “new products”. One of them appeared to be a magic tool that emitted cool air. It was probably an amazing invention. But since magic could achieve the same effect, its value was lost on us.
“Hey, is this thing really that impressive?”
“Seems like it. But I don’t think we need it.”
“Right? We can already adjust the room temperature however we want—hot or cold.”
Lilia whispered close to my ear. It tickled a bit. While she had turned invisible, she couldn’t suppress her voice. So she had to lean in to speak quietly.
“Fel-san! I’ve been waiting for you!”
A loud voice echoed across the main street. Startled, I turned in the direction of the voice and saw Sancho-san running toward me. He was waving both hands enthusiastically. Behind him, his guards were hurrying after him. They were looking flustered.
People passing by started staring in our direction. I was drawing way too much attention.
