Episode 19: Sancho’s Residence
I followed Sancho-san into the store. It seemed like we would be receiving hospitality here first. But Sancho-san quickly noticed something was off.
“Fel-san, where is the Fairy?”
He whispered to me in a way that others wouldn’t hear. At least he was being considerate. Though if that were the case, he could have just waited inside instead of standing out front.
“I had Lilia disappear since things would get chaotic if people saw her. But when she’s invisible, she has no restraint when it comes to pranks. So be careful.”
If he asked me how exactly to be careful, I wouldn’t know what to say. But the safest approach was to avoid doing anything that might displease Lilia while she was invisible. She could easily do something like blowing air onto the hairs on Sancho-san’s head, just for fun.
“I-I see. I will be extremely cautious. Ah, but first, this way please. I have prepared a carriage.”
It seemed the store was only being used as a meeting point. The real destination was somewhere else. And we would be heading there by carriage.
Exiting through the back of the store, I saw a splendid carriage waiting for us. As soon as we got in, the carriage set off. It was as if the driver had been expecting us.
“My house is a bit of a distance from the trading company. Originally, I had planned to live inside the company building. But my wife’s health deteriorated. So, I decided to move somewhere quieter.”
As I listened to Sancho-san’s story, I looked out the window. The carriage was heading into a residential area. As we moved further in, the surrounding buildings started to exude an air of refinement.
The people walking along the streets were no longer dressed like commoners; instead, they wore stylish, elegant outfits suitable for strolling through the city. The noisy hustle and bustle from earlier seemed like a lie—everything was quiet now.
“Sancho-san, is this an upscale residential area?”
“Yes, it is. That’s why it’s so peaceful here. Every house has a garden, so the area is full of greenery.”
Indeed, outside the window, I could see beautifully maintained gardens with colorful flowers in bloom. Some houses had trees planted. Their lush leaves casted cool, pleasant shade.
A high-end residential area… That meant there were probably nobles living here as well. That thought brought back some unpleasant memories. Honestly, I didn’t really want to be here. Maybe I shouldn’t have agreed to this so readily. But ignoring it completely wouldn’t sit right with me either.
“Everyone is so well-dressed. Maybe I should dress up too?”
Lilia had been keenly observing the scenery outside. She suddenly turned to me.
Because of our contract, I could still see Lilia even when she was invisible. Her body became slightly transparent. It allowed me to faintly see through to the background. Other than that, she looked the same as always.
“That might not be a bad idea. At the very least, it would be better than the revealing outfit you have on now.”
I quickly tried to erase the mental image of her plump little butt floating right in front of me earlier.
“Revealing outfit? You’re the one who enjoys seeing me dressed like this, Fel.”
She saw right through me! But that only applied when I was the only one looking. I didn’t want anyone else seeing her like that.
“I’ll admit that’s true. But I’d prefer if you wore something a little more modest when other people are around.”
“Hmm… You’re more possessive than I thought, Fel. Alright, how about this?”
She spun around. And in an instant, her outfit changed. She was now wearing a skirt. And underneath, a pair of white pumpkin pants peeked out. Yeah, this should be fine.
“I think it looks great. It suits you really well.”
“Really? Then I’ll wear this whenever I’m around other people.”
Lilia revealed herself again. Sancho-san seemed surprised but managed to keep quiet.
Looking out the window, I noticed that almost everyone outside was human now. I could see a few elves and beastmen, but they were scarce.
Even in a multi-racial nation, it seemed that humans were the ones at the center of everything. They were probably the ones making the most money, too. Maybe the nobles were all human as well. If that were the case, I really didn’t want to get too involved with them.
“Fel-san, that over there is my house.”
While I was lost in thought, we had arrived at Sancho-san’s residence. He pointed toward a standalone house with a blue roof and a garden. It was noticeably larger than the surrounding homes, a clear indicator of Sancho-san’s wealth.
“What a splendid house. Do nobles live in this area as well?”
“No, they don’t live around here. They reside further in the central district.”
Sancho-san pointed toward the heart of the city. That was a relief. I felt a bit at ease knowing I wouldn’t have to interact with nobles. Once the treatment was done, I’d make my exit as soon as possible.
As soon as the carriage stopped and we stepped onto the ground, a wave of heat enveloped us.
It seemed Sancho-san’s carriage had been equipped with a magic tool that emitted cool air. That explained the pleasant temperature inside. Magic tools like that were more useful than I had thought.
Sancho-san led us into his home. As soon as he opened the front door, several servants appeared.
“Welcome home, Master.”
“These are my esteemed guests—Fel-san and the Fairy, Lady Lilia. Be sure to treat them with the utmost respect.”
The servants’ eyes widened in shock. This was likely the first time they had ever seen a Fairy. Lilia, on the other hand, looked displeased at being addressed so formally.
Lilia hated being called “Lady.” She much preferred being called “Lilia-chan.”
“I’d like you to meet my wife, Mies, right away. Would that be alright?”
“I don’t mind.”
With that, Sancho-san led us upstairs. The second floor had several private rooms lined up along the hallway. Sancho-san stopped in front of the largest and most ornate door, then knocked.
A response came immediately, and a servant peeked out.
“Mies, it’s me. May I come in?”
“Of course, but…?”
A puzzled voice answered from inside. Sancho-san probably didn’t usually bother knocking before entering. Since we were here today, he must have decided to check first.
Once he gestured for us to enter, we stepped into the room.
Inside, a woman lay on a large, canopy-covered bed.
“Sancho, who are these people?”
“They’re adventurers I hired as guards.”
“Oh my! Don’t tell me you went out on a supply run yourself again? I understand you don’t want to lose your merchant’s instincts, but isn’t it about time you started delegating that responsibility to others?”
Sancho-san gave a strained smile as his wife scolded him. It seemed he had secretly traveled to Colibri Town.
“Well, well, let’s set that aside for now. While I was there, I had my right arm treated.”
“Your right arm… No way!”
“That’s right. And there’s a chance your body can be restored too, Mies.”
Mies-san’s eyes sparkled with hope as she turned toward me. I had no intention of refusing, but I needed to make one thing clear.
“In exchange, I must ask that you keep this a secret. The magic I use seems to be quite rare.”
“I swear to keep my promise.”
Mies-san’s gaze was filled with unwavering determination.
“Alright then—Extra Heal.”
A gentle light enveloped Mies-san before fading away. That should have done the trick.
“Someone who can use Extra Heal actually exists?!”
I felt like Sancho-san had said something similar earlier. It really must be an exceptionally rare spell.
Mies-san wiggled her feet under the blankets. She should have regained sensation. And her lost muscle mass should have been somewhat restored as well.
“They’re moving… My legs are moving!”
With a shout, Mies-san stood up from the bed.
