Episode 20: The Mysterious HealerÂ
Sancho-san and Mies-san were embracing each other, crying. Left behind, we weren’t sure what to do. So we simply turned our backs to give them some space.Â
“Hey, don’t you think we can leave now?”Â
“I think so too. If we don’t hurry back and find an inn, we might end up sleeping outdoors.”Â
There was no reason to stay any longer. We had done what we came to do. And we should follow Liner’s example and find a decent place to stay as soon as possible.Â
However, it seemed our whispered conversation hadn’t gone unnoticed.Â
“There’s no need for that, Fel-san. Please stay here tonight. No, in fact, whenever you come to Everan, you’re always welcome to stay here!”Â
Sancho-san was still in tears. He grabbed my hand as he spoke. I wasn’t sure how to respond. Even Lilia, who was usually cheerful, had a strained expression on her face.Â
And so, without much room to refuse, we ended up staying at Sancho-san’s mansion.Â
I did try to decline, but it was no use.Â
“Lilia-chan, you look great in this outfit too!”Â
“As expected of Mama! How is it? How do I look?”Â
Lilia and Mies-san had completely hit it off and had started a fashion show. As the wife of a great merchant, Mies-san had a vast collection of trendy clothes from the royal capital and an excellent sense of style.Â
She was having Lilia replicate the outfits and was playing dress-up with her like a doll. Lilia, for her part, seemed to have discovered a newfound love for fashion. She kept changing outfits. She shifted between vibrant colors like a field of blooming flowers.Â
Apparently, Lilia’s clothes were made from magic. That meant she could change their appearance based on her imagination. I hadn’t known that before.Â
Not only did she switch between her usual green attire, but she also experimented with red, yellow, pink, and even gold, silver, and mithril-like colors. Her already sparkling aura became even more dazzling. It was almost blinding.Â
“I’m sorry, Fel-san. It seems my wife is getting a bit too excited.”Â
“It’s fine. Lilia seems to be enjoying herself too.”Â
The men sat at the table, sipping tea and watching the two women with warm smiles. They really did look like they were having fun.Â
“Sancho-san, you mentioned before that you had been poisoned. That means someone deliberately tried to poison you, right?”Â
“Yes, that’s right. It happened around the time my trading company was granted access to the royal castle. I suspect it was the work of a jealous competitor. Of course, I have no proof.”Â
Sancho-san gave a wry smile. It seemed that even in the world of merchants, there was plenty of backstabbing. That was probably true no matter what country you were in. I definitely didn’t want to get involved in that kind of trouble.Â
“But they won’t catch me off guard again. I have this now.”Â
He showed me a ring. It was a magic ring that nullified poison. With that, he wouldn’t have to worry about being poisoned again. Looking closer, I noticed that Mies-san was wearing the same ring.Â
“That’s reassuring. Constantly having to check your food would be exhausting.”Â
“Fel-san, you should be careful too.”Â
“I will.”Â
I didn’t have a ring like that. But with Analyze, I could easily check if something was poisoned. Thanks to Lilia, most things could be handled with magic. I was grateful for that.Â
“By the way, Fel-san, can you use Anti-Curse magic?”Â
“Anti-Curse? Is someone cursed?”Â
“Anti-Curse… Sancho-san, don’t tell me…?”Â
Lilia and Mies-san joined us at the table. A servant quickly brought warm drinks. For some reason, I had a bad feeling. Was someone even more important than Sancho-san involved? I could use Anti-Curse, but maybe I should pretend I couldn’t…Â
“I can use Anti-Curse. But placing a curse on someone is incredibly difficult, isn’t it?”Â
Lilia tilted her head in curiosity. Apparently, she could use not just magic, but curses as well.Â
Speaking of curses, did they require sacrifices or something? I was a little curious.Â
“The truth is, the wife of the lord who governs Everan has been afflicted with a terrible curse—she has lost her voice.”Â
Without me even asking, Sancho-san began explaining. It seemed he had already decided that I would use Anti-Curse to break the spell. This was all Lilia’s fault for speaking up…Â
“She can’t speak…? Has anyone made any demands in exchange for lifting the curse?”
“Yes, of course. The demand was for the lord to step down.”Â
So, they want the lord to resign. That alone doesn’t tell us who’s behind this. It could be a rival noble, or it could even be the residents of this city.Â
Lifting the curse is one thing, but there’s something I need to ask first.Â
“What kind of person is this lord?”Â
“Oh, Fel-san! He is certainly not a bad person. He is a remarkable individual who purified this commercial city of Everan, which had been rotting with bribery and corruption.”Â
I see. That makes it even harder to figure out who placed the curse. A person like that must have made plenty of enemies. Even so, managing to cleanse the city despite all that opposition means he must be both highly capable and strongly committed to justice.Â
“Hey, Fel, let’s go help.”Â
Lilia spoke while munching on a snack she had received from Mies-san. She’s already been bribed! I thought eating was just a pastime for Fairies? Looking closely, she had already eaten quite a few expensive-looking sweets.Â
I guess there’s no saying no now. Besides, the lord doesn’t seem like a bad person. Well, fine—so long as I don’t draw too much attention to myself.Â
“Alright, I’ll do it. But I have one condition.”Â
“And what would that be?”Â
I could almost hear Sancho-san gulp nervously.Â
“I don’t want my identity revealed. Just say that a mysterious healer treated the curse.”Â
“What?! But if the client is rich, you could make a fortune! That’s such a waste.”Â
Lilia objected. She had a point. But if word got out, it could easily lead back to the kingdom. And that would be a huge problem. I value my freedom more than money. As long as I can earn enough to get by, that’s all I need.Â
And honestly, I’m already making more than enough as it is.Â
“I understand. We will fully respect your wishes, Fel-san. We’ll say that a passing mysterious healer performed the treatment. I’ll even prepare an outfit for you. I’ll arrange everything right away. So please stay here a little longer until it’s all set.”Â
“Understood. I’ll be in your care until then.”Â
“In your care? This is hardly enough to repay the debt we owe you.”Â
Mies-san said that sincerely. But I had no intention of making them feel indebted. I was simply helping because Sancho-san’s wife was in trouble. Somehow, though, this situation seemed to be taking on a life of its own. If I don’t redirect things soon, I have a bad feeling this will spiral out of control.Â
Lilia didn’t seem concerned at all, but who knows what’s going on in her head?Â
I sat with her, eating sweets, while feeling a growing sense of unease.Â
…Oh, this snack is actually pretty good.
