Episode 21: The Lord of the Commercial City of Everan
That night’s dinner was an extravagant feast. It was in celebration of Mies-san, Sancho-san’s wife, making a full recovery.
Besides us, many others with close ties to Sancho-san, as well as employees in managerial positions, attended the banquet.
Several adventurers based in Everan were also present. So our presence didn’t stand out too much. Just in case, though, I had Lilia stay invisible.
Mies-san seemed a little uneasy when she noticed Lilia wasn’t there. But with so many people congratulating her, she quickly became too distracted to dwell on it.
She and Lilia had really hit it off. Maybe she wanted to introduce Lilia to everyone as a friend. Unfortunately, I didn’t want too much attention on Lilia. So I had her stay hidden.
Sitting at the edge of the table, I secretly fed Lilia so no one would notice.
It had been a while since I’d had such a luxurious meal. But I didn’t feel particularly sentimental about it. My only thought was, “Oh yeah, I remember eating this kind of food before.”
After the meal, I was offered the chance to take a bath.
Honestly, I was more excited about this than the food. It had been far too long since my last proper bath. If I ever got my own house, I would absolutely make sure to have a bathroom.
“Finally, we get to take a bath. That took forever.”
“Yeah. Magic can keep us clean. But without a bath, something still feels off.”
Magic could clean not just my body but also my clothes instantly. However, it couldn’t wash away exhaustion. For that, a relaxing bath was essential.
I stepped into the bathhouse after undressing—only to find Lilia already there, completely naked.
Through the steam, I could see her smooth, glowing skin. Her cheeks were slightly flushed from the warmth of the bath.
Panicking, I quickly bent forward. I had completely forgotten about this…
—
When I lay down on the soft bed, I fell asleep before I even realized it.
By the time I woke up, it was already morning. I had underestimated just how effective a good bed could be for sleep.
I must have taken comfortable beds for granted before. Now, I really wanted a high-quality bed of my own.
“Fel-san, do you have any plans for today?”
During breakfast, Sancho-san asked about my schedule. He was probably referring to the curse removal situation. He likely wanted to keep track of my movements.
“I plan to visit the Adventurers’ Guild in the morning. There might be a reward for dealing with the bandit group. After that, I’d like to explore the city a bit. I’ll return here for lunch.”
“That would be helpful. I plan to move things along as much as possible this morning. So if all goes well, we should be able to visit Count Hauzinha in the afternoon.”
It seemed that the lord governing Everan was Count Hauzinha.
I might be getting involved with a noble… I’d have to be extra careful to keep my identity hidden.
Sancho-san offered to arrange a carriage for me. But I politely declined. Arriving at the Adventurers’ Guild in a carriage would only make me stand out in the worst way.
Instead, I relied on the map Sancho-san had given me and headed toward the guild. Since I had visited just yesterday, I remembered most of the route.
Still, it was quite a distance from Sancho’s mansion. So, getting there took a fair bit of time.
“If the guild is this far away, it really makes a difference… We’ll have to be careful about location when we rent a place.”
“Yeah. It might be quiet and a nice area, but if we have to walk this distance every day, it’d be a hassle.”
“We’d have to start waking up early, too. I prefer sleeping in as long as I want.”
We whispered to each other as we entered the Adventurers’ Guild. I was making sure no one noticed Lilia.
The morning rush had already passed. So the guild wasn’t too crowded. The remaining requests on the board seemed to offer decent rewards.
However, if no one had accepted them, that likely meant there was something shady about the client.
I made a mental note of their names. It never hurt to be cautious.
“Excuse me, I’m here about the bandit extermination reward. What’s the status on that?”
“Please wait a moment……… Ah, here it is. Could I have your name?”
“It’s Fel.”
When I gave my name, I was handed a pouch filled with my reward money. After signing the receipt, the matter of the bandit extermination was officially settled. My reputation within the Adventurers’ Guild had likely increased significantly as a result.
After thanking the receptionist, I left the guild.
“So, what are we doing next?”
“Let’s see……..… First, let’s look for some unique food. Since we’ve come all this way, we should try something new.”
“Agreed! I wonder if there are any unusual fruits!”
“There should be, especially since goods from the royal capital are being brought in.”
With that, we headed to the fresh market. Which we hadn’t had the chance to visit yesterday. It was located about halfway between the Adventurers’ Guild and the Sancho Trading Company.
Looking around, I noticed children playing in the backstreets.
It seemed that past the backstreets was a residential area. It likely explained why the marketplace was so lively. Compared to the market in Colibri, this one seemed even more bustling.
We navigated through the crowd while checking out the various stalls. Lilia, still invisible, clung to the top of my head—her designated safe spot in crowded areas.
We snacked on some suspicious-looking food. And we made it back to Sancho-san’s mansion just before noon, as promised. Some of the fruits we tried were surprisingly intense. It made me realize just how vast the world truly was. Now I wanted to explore even more.
One fruit changed flavor depending on where you bit it. It seemed like it was made for punishment games—it was incredibly spicy. Lilia, on the other hand, got a sour piece and ended up looking like a wilted flower.
“We’re back.”
“Fel-san! We’ve been waiting for you. Count Hauzinha has requested to see you as soon as possible.”
“Requested?” Did Sancho-san personally visit Count Hauzinha? If so, that meant their connection was quite deep.
I should assume that any information I shared with Sancho-san would inevitably reach Count Hauzinha as well. To be honest, I’d rather not get too involved. Nobles had a tendency to wield their authority as they pleased.
Well, if things took a turn for the worse, I could always just run away again. There were plenty of other countries. This wasn’t the only place to go—there was even another continent.
“Understood. Would it be alright if I ate lunch first?”
“Of course! Lunch has already been prepared. But before that, I’d like to give you this.”
Sancho-san handed me a suspicious-looking outfit. It seemed to be an imported item from the East. It was embroidered with unfamiliar patterns all over.
And then, there was the second item—an eerie-looking mask. It would certainly conceal my face, but wasn’t this outfit a bit too suspicious?
Well, if Sancho-san chose it, it was probably fine.
After finishing the lunch Sancho-san had prepared, I quickly changed into my disguise and left the mansion.
The carriage took us straight toward the city’s central district. Ahead, I could see a pointed blue roof. That was probably the grand cathedral located in the city center.
As we neared, a vast garden filled with numerous topiaries came into view. The carriage stopped in front of a large mansion—our apparent destination.
Were those topiaries Count Hauzinha’s personal hobby?
The coachman showed something to the gatekeeper, and we were let in without any issue.
Wait… Shouldn’t they have at least checked who we were? Normally, if someone dressed as suspiciously as I was rode up in a carriage, they’d be turned away at the gate immediately…..
