Episode 26: Exploration, Discovery, and the City of Everan
The inn we were recommended was quite expensive for a rookie adventurer. However, as Gold Rank adventurers, we were no longer considered rookies. So it wasn’t a problem for us.
It was located close to Everan’s shopping district and was a sturdy stone building with decent soundproofing.
The room we were shown had two sections: a bedroom and a sitting area. There were two beds, both soft and fluffy. From the third-floor window, we could see quite far into the distance. The sun was beginning to set in the western sky.
“Alright, what should we do for dinner? Lilia, you’ll have to stay hidden, which makes it hard for you to eat, doesn’t it?”
“Don’t worry about me. I don’t need to eat anyway. But if you insist, just buy me some alcohol. Ever since that time, I’ve really started to enjoy it~.”
I really wanted to refuse. Lilia seemed to be developing a drinking habit, and I didn’t like it. Plus, she had terrible drinking manners. Even if she drank in our room, it would be a mental strain on me. I mean, how was I supposed to deal with Lilia crawling toward me completely naked?
“Alright, I’ll buy food from the food stalls and bring it back here. That way, we can eat together. But no alcohol.”
“Ugh, fine…”
Lilia looked dissatisfied. But I stood my ground. Are Fairies naturally fond of alcohol? I had thought that was just a dwarf thing, but maybe I needed to reconsider.
After greeting the innkeeper, I headed out into the streets of Everan at dusk. Last time I was here, I had dinner at Sancho-san’s house every night. So this was my first time trying the night market. I was excited to see what kinds of food they had.
“Ew, what’s that? Is it a snake?”
“Uh… the sign says ‘eel’. I wonder if it tastes good?”
It smelled nice, and there was a decent line of people waiting for it. Curious, I bought one skewer.
I also spotted something called “yaki-men”, a noodle dish. So I bought that too.
There was another dish being cooked on an iron plate filled with round holes. It smelled incredible. So I bought some of that as well.
For drinks, I chose fruit juice. Everan had its own original mixed juice, so I got that. There was also something called “Refreshing Lemon Water”, so I bought that, too.
Satisfied with my purchases, I returned to the inn.
After laying out our spoils on the table, we toasted and dug in.
“Ham~! This eel is pretty good. We should’ve bought more.”
“Definitely not a snake. The meat is light but fluffy, and the glaze on it is rich and fragrant.”
Both the yaki-men and the round food were delicious. The sauces used on them were a perfect match. If I had this sauce, maybe I could cook something delicious too.
“I wonder if they sell this sauce somewhere?”
“Hmm, I think the sign said it was homemade.”
“Oh, that’s too bad. But this is a commercial city, so maybe I can find something similar if I look around.”
“Yeah, let’s check while we explore the city tomorrow.”
After filling our stomachs, we headed to the bath. This inn actually had a bath! And if you paid extra, you could rent a private one. I didn’t hesitate to pay for it.
Inside was a tub large enough for two adults to soak comfortably.
“This is great. I definitely need a bath in my life.”
“You really like baths, don’t you, Fel? Once you get used to them, you can’t go back. I love baths too.”
With that, Lilia instantly stripped naked.
At least cover yourself a little!
I did my best to avoid looking at her directly while washing myself. When she asked me to wash her, I had no choice but to oblige.
Washing her using only the sense of touch was surprisingly difficult.
“Hey, Lilia.”
“Hmm? What?”
“Never mind, it’s nothing.”
“You’re acting weird~.”
I could’ve sworn that Lilia’s chest had grown a little. Just a while ago, there was nothing there. But now, I could feel the faintest hint of a curve.
I wanted to confirm with my eyes. But that was definitely out of the question.
So Fairies do grow, huh? I had assumed they didn’t change since Lilia had looked the same for ten years. I wonder if she’ll end up with a nice figure someday? If that happens, I’ll have an even harder time knowing where to look.
While these thoughts crossed my mind, bath time ended without incident. I spent the entire time hunched over, as always. Since this was my usual bathing posture, Lilia didn’t find it suspicious.
Would she despise me if she realized I was reacting to her naked body? That would be a little painful…
At night, I finally got to sleep on the much-anticipated fluffy bed. Even though there was a free bed available, Lilia still chose to sleep in mine. Or more precisely, on top of me.
It seemed that, to Lilia, it didn’t matter whether a bed was soft or hard. I couldn’t help but wonder if that was really okay. Fluffy beds feel so good, after all.
The next day, we explored the entire city of Everan. I noticed a few places I had missed on my previous visit—specifically, a casino and a slave market. Neither of these existed in the town of Colibri. So I was a bit surprised.
I never expected the Kingdom of Fortune to have a slave system. I always thought of it as a “land of freedom where anything is possible.” So this was unexpected. Still, if there’s a slave system, that means there must be demand for it. Not that I intend to use it, though.
Lilia begged me to take her to the casino. But I immediately refused. There’s no telling what a mischievous, invisible Fairy would do in a place like that.
Knowing Lilia, she’d easily peek at opponents’ cards or manipulate the roulette ball. That place was definitely off-limits.
“I wanted to play at the casino~. We have money, so why not spend it?”
“I plan to spend plenty, just not there. If there’s anything you want, just tell me. But no casinos, no buying slaves, and no alcohol.”
“Ugh, stingy! At least let me buy some alcohol!”
Since we had money this time, I decided to buy some magic tools. First, I got a magic lantern. While an oil lamp would have worked fine, the magic version was much brighter. Plus, this way, I could use the Small Light spell without it being too obvious.
I also bought a magic stove. I was getting more comfortable with cooking and wanted to step up my game. A magic stove would allow for better heat control, which should improve my cooking.
“Fel, how about this? It looks useful.”
Lilia had found a magic tool that displayed the current time. It was designed to be worn around the neck. Knowing the time would make it easier to schedule breaks and monitor cooking durations. That actually sounded useful.
“Alright, let’s buy that too. I guess there aren’t many magic tools suited for Fairies, huh?”
“It can’t be helped. No one makes magic tools for Fairies… probably.”
I wanted to buy something for Lilia, but it was tricky. The size difference alone made things difficult. Some things just couldn’t be helped.
………Should I just let her have alcohol?
“Lilia, wanna buy some alcohol?”
“Really!? Yay!”
Wow, I didn’t expect her to be this happy. Does alcohol really make her feel that good? Seeing her this excited, maybe banning it was unnecessary. As long as she only drinks until she’s pleasantly tipsy, it should be fine.
In the end, it wasn’t fine.
Lilia looked incredibly content, though.
