Episode 33: Touring the Royal CapitalÂ
We arrived at Count Hauzinha’s estate shortly after 3 PM. At this time of day, we should still be able to visit the Adventurers’ Guild in the royal capital. It was to report the completion of our quest.Â
“Count Hauzinha, I’d like to go to the Adventurers’ Guild to make my report. Would that be alright?”Â
“Hmm… Alright, I’ll make arrangements immediately.”Â
After a quick glance at his pocket watch, Count Hauzinha promptly gave instructions to a servant. It seemed they were preparing a carriage for us. That made sense. We didn’t know anything about the royal capital. And since it was a vast city, having a guide and a carriage would ensure we could return without getting lost.Â
We were likely going to be staying at Count Hauzinha’s estate for a while. If we were to go missing, it would surely cause trouble for him and for Sancho-san.Â
I didn’t want my actions to bring misfortune to anyone. So for now, I decided to accept their hospitality until things settled down.Â
“The Adventurers’ Guild is quite far from the noble district. I’m afraid it’ll take some time to get there.”Â
“That’s no problem. In the meantime, we’ll take our time sightseeing around the capital.”Â
“In that case, I’ll arrange for you to visit some of the city’s attractions as time allows.”Â
“Thank you very much.”Â
This was quite the VIP treatment. I never thought I’d experience something like this again. But life sure is full of surprises.Â
“I wonder if there are any interesting shops around!”Â
“Yeah, hopefully, we’ll find some fun places to check out.”Â
With that, we set off for the Adventurers’ Guild.Â
Our carriage soon left the dull noble district behind and entered a lively street bustling with people. Even though we were still in the back streets, there were already quite a few pedestrians. Among them, I could see elves, dwarves, and beastkin as well.Â
It seemed that outside the noble district, the royal capital had quite a diverse population. Our carriage was heading straight for the Adventurers’ Guild first.Â
“I thought we should complete our main objective first, then explore the city afterward.”Â
“Thank you, that sounds good to me.”Â
The coachman called out to us. He was letting us know that he would avoid the crowded main streets and take a more direct route to the guild.Â
As the carriage moved forward, the sounds of a bustling city grew louder. It was a stark contrast to the silence of the noble district.Â
Perhaps the guild was located far from the noble district precisely because of this liveliness—or rather, the noise. If this level of commotion continued into the night, it would certainly make it hard to sleep.Â
“We’re almost there. That building up ahead is the Adventurers’ Guild.”Â
“That’s the Adventurers’ Guild?”Â
“It’s huge! It looks like a fortress!”Â
Just as Lilia said, it was a massive structure built from large, carefully shaped stone blocks, resembling a fortress. It was probably designed to function as one in case of emergency. Surrounding the guild were multiple five-story inns.Â
Those inns were undoubtedly built for adventurers. That meant there must be a massive number of adventurers in the royal capital.Â
I just hoped we wouldn’t run into any trouble the moment we stepped inside the guild. Just in case, I decided to have Lilia make herself invisible.Â
“Lilia, just to be safe, can you make yourself invisible?”Â
“Oh? If you say so, Fel.”Â
Lilia’s figure gradually became translucent until she disappeared entirely. Now, no one but me would be able to see her.Â
We had the carriage stop a little distance from the guild. Arriving directly in a noble’s carriage would attract too much attention.Â
“Alright, we’re heading in.”Â
“Understood. I’ll wait here.”Â
The carriage bore Count Hauzinha’s family crest. No adventurer would be foolish enough to mess with nobles. Otherwise, they wouldn’t last long as adventurers.Â
With a slightly nervous heart, I stepped through the guild’s grand, arching entrance.Â
Even though it was just before 4 PM, the place was packed with people. Back in the town of Colibri, the guild would usually be empty at this hour.Â
The royal capital really was something else.Â
Looking around, I noticed that nearly everyone here was part of a party. At each table, groups of four or five adventurers sat together.Â
“Fel, you might be the only solo adventurer here.”Â
“Looks like it. In Colibri, there were a fair number of solo adventurers, though.”Â
“I guess you just can’t get by alone here.”Â
“Maybe so…”
I avoided making eye contact with the other adventurers as I headed toward the reception counter. Standing in line were several women who looked like noble ladies. They weren’t real noble ladies… right?Â
“Um, I’m here to report the completion of a quest…”Â
I nervously handed over the request form for the escort mission. The receptionist processed it quickly and efficiently.Â
“Alright, confirmation complete. You must be Fel-san, a Gold Rank adventurer. Welcome to the royal capital’s Adventurers’ Guild. Here is your reward for this quest.”Â
A small pouch was placed on the counter. After checking the contents, I signed to confirm receipt. That was it—the process was complete. Without wasting any time, I left the guild as quickly as possible. Luckily, no one approached me.Â
“I’m back.”Â
“That was fast. Well then, let’s take our time heading back while we still have some time.”Â
“Yes, thank you. Lilia, you don’t have to stay invisible anymore.”Â
“When the receptionist mentioned your Gold Rank, quite a few people turned to look at you.”Â
“Ugh… hearing that makes me not want to go back to the guild anymore.”Â
It seemed like I had already attracted some unwanted attention. If only that receptionist hadn’t said anything unnecessary.Â
Now, I needed to decide on my next base of operations. Should I return to Colibri or stay in the royal capital? There were more Gold Rank quests available here, after all. If I wanted to earn money quickly and retire early, the royal capital might be the better option.Â
As I pondered my options, the carriage continued moving. No, no—I shouldn’t be thinking about that right now. We had sightseeing spots to visit, and I needed to enjoy them. Lilia was probably looking forward to it too.Â
Ahead of us, a massive tree came into view. Was it the royal capital’s symbolic tree? The area around it formed a plaza. Its exposed soil made a clear contrast against the surrounding stone pavement.Â
“Does that tree have any special meaning?”Â
“Hmm… I don’t sense anything from it. It’s just a big tree.”Â
“Oh. I thought maybe a spirit lived in it or that it was an important tree for elves or something.”Â
“There’s no way something like that would be right in the middle of a city. If anything, it’d be deep in a secluded forest where people don’t go.”Â
The carriage continued on to the next sightseeing spot—a massive clock tower. A tall tower with a clock mounted near the top. And above that, a large bell. It would probably ring at set times. And with its size, the sound would likely carry far.Â
Looking around, I noticed some unfamiliar food items displayed in the street stalls. People were eating them, so they were definitely edible.Â
“I wonder if that tastes good…”Â
“It looks kind of gross… but the inside actually looks delicious.”Â
Just as Lilia said, the inside was a vibrant orange. It was making it look tasty. If it were cut into pieces and served on a plate, I might be willing to try it. But in its current form, it looked too much like some kind of eyeball.Â
Other stalls displayed unusual, vividly colored clothes and curved swords. Could those swords even cut properly?Â
“Look, Fel! There’s a library! It’s huge!”Â
“With a library this big, there must be plenty of books on magic. We might be able to learn a lot about magic if we search here. Let’s visit it sometime.”Â
“Yeah! I bet they have a lot of rare books too.”
