Episode 39: Port Town BeaumontÂ
With our stomachs full, we returned to the inn. As soon as we got back, we flopped onto the tatami mats.Â
“Ahh, tatami is great. You can just roll around freely on it.”Â
“Yeah, I could get used to this. But more importantly—the bath! Can you believe there’s a bathtub inside the room? That’s unheard of!”Â
“Yeah, it really is. Alright, let’s fill it up with hot water.”Â
I grabbed the instruction manual and headed to the bathroom. According to the manual, the bathtub was made of a type of wood called Hinoki. The bathroom had a distinct scent, but it wasn’t unpleasant.Â
“So this is the scent of Hinoki.”Â
“This is my first time smelling it. I’ve never been to the Eastern Continent, but it seems like there are plants there that I don’t even know about. That’s kind of shocking.”Â
“Well, you are a plant expert, Lilia. We should visit the Eastern Continent sometime.”Â
I followed the instructions to operate the magic tool that dispensed hot water. After a moment, warm water started flowing out. Though it seemed a bit hotter than expected.Â
“Wouldn’t it be faster to just use magic?”Â
Lilia bluntly pointed out the obvious as she watched the slow trickle of water. She had a point—it was going to take a while for the tub to fill up.Â
“Well, in the meantime, we can get changed and relax.”Â
I led Lilia back to the room. This inn even provided something called yukata. They were special robes for lounging and sleeping. Apparently, if we took them downstairs in the morning, they’d be washed and returned. This place was incredibly accommodating. Without hesitation, I changed into a yukata.Â
“Not bad, right?”Â
“Ugh, not fair, Fel. I want one too!”Â
As she said that, her clothes instantly changed into a yukata, just like mine. Lilia’s magic was seriously convenient.Â
“It looks great on you, Lilia.”Â
“R-Really? Ehehe.”Â
She beamed happily as I patted her head. But then, I realized something—if she bent forward, wouldn’t I see something I shouldn’t? Crap. This was going to be a problem.Â
As if on cue, Lilia leaned forward. Ah—!Â
Once the bath was ready, we stepped into the inn’s prized Hinoki tub. It was incredibly soothing. I never imagined we’d find an inn with a private bath in each room. This place was so good, we might not even need to rent a house anymore.Â
“This feels amazing. If only we had a view outside.”Â
“I don’t think that’s possible. It wouldn’t be very relaxing if people could see in. Oh, that reminds me—I heard there are natural hot springs deep in the mountains. Maybe those have a view.”Â
“Hot springs, huh? Maybe we should go looking for one. Sounds like a new goal!”Â
Lilia was partially veiled in steam. She looked almost otherworldly. The fact that I got to witness this sight all to myself… I must be a lucky man.Â
“What’s wrong?”Â
“Oh, uh… I was just thinking about what to do tomorrow.”Â
“Since we’re Platinum Rank adventurers now, why don’t we try taking on a Platinum Rank quest?”Â
“Yeah, that sounds good. Hopefully, there’s one without any party size restrictions.”Â
“There’s bound to be at least one!”Â
After our bath, we slipped into bed. I didn’t think I was that tired. But before I knew it, morning had arrived.Â
—Â
Even though we got a late start, we still made it to the Adventurers’ Guild a little after eight. The guild was already bustling with people. As we felt numerous gazes on us, we made our way to the board where Platinum Rank requests were posted.Â
“There are quite a few… but most of them are pretty far away.”Â
“Are all Platinum Rank quests like that? If possible, I’d prefer something nearby… Oh, here’s one! A request from Port Town Beaumont! That’s the port town visible from the royal capital, right? Lilia, didn’t you say you wanted to visit a port town?”Â
“Oh, yeah! Let’s take that one!”Â
The request was to subjugate a “Sea Devil” that had been appearing offshore. To get more details, we’d have to check with the reception desk. For now, we decided to at least hear them out.Â
“I wonder what kind of monster this ‘Sea Devil’ is?”Â
I couldn’t picture it. So I turned to Lilia, the walking encyclopedia.Â
“It’s probably a Kraken.”Â
“A Kraken? What kind of monster is that?”
“It has a round body with eight legs growing out of it. It’s big, but compared to a Water Dragon, it’s nothing special.”Â
“There are some really weirdly shaped monsters out there. The world is huge.”Â
As I pondered the vastness of the world, we arrived at the reception counter. It was where Clarisse-san was on duty. When I handed her the request form, she furrowed her brows.Â
“Umm… This is the request to subjugate the Sea Devil, correct? …Are you sure about this?”Â
“What do you mean by ‘are we sure’?”Â
“This request involves fighting on the sea. Well, technically, on a ship. If you fall into the ocean, it’s a disaster. So no one wants to take it.”Â
It seemed that this request had gone unclaimed for quite some time. Yet, since Port Town Beaumont was still functioning, the Sea Devil was a threat. But not to the point of endangering the city’s survival.Â
“It’s fine. If that’s the case, we’ll just fight in the air.”Â
“In the air!?”Â
“Yes. We can fly, after all.”Â
I glanced at Lilia. She looked half-convinced, half-unsure.Â
“Fel-san, you can fly as well?”Â
“That’s right.”Â
I could feel the stares from people around us intensifying. It was almost painful. Was this one of the downsides of being Platinum Rank? Lilia, on the other hand, didn’t seem to care at all. I needed to strengthen my mental fortitude. That was a new challenge for me.Â
“Understood. I’ll process your request immediately.”Â
After completing the paperwork and receiving the request form from Clarisse-san, we headed straight for Port Town Beaumont. It was about a two-hour carriage ride away. We could have flown there with magic, but that would have attracted too much attention. So we decided against it.Â
—Â
We arrived at Port Town Beaumont without any issues. The town had a smell I had never encountered before. Was this the scent of the sea? Curious, I went straight to check out the ocean.Â
“This is amazing. So this is the sea. It stretches as far as the eye can see! Look, the horizon is curved!”Â
“You’re right. I can’t see any land on the other side. If we ever want to cross the sea, we’ll definitely need a ship.”Â
“Yeah. I bet some of those ships out there are bound for the neighboring continent.”Â
As I observed the numerous ships floating on the water, I used Analyze to search for our target—the Sea Devil. If it really was a Kraken, I hoped we’d find it quickly.Â
“Alright, let’s go see the client. We should at least hear them out first.”Â
“Yeah. If I remember correctly, the client is the lord who governs this town.”Â
The lord’s mansion was practically a fortress. It was probably designed to withstand enemy attacks from the sea. Situated on a small hill, it provided a clear view of the entire port town.Â
Looking closely, I noticed a ship being built in one part of the port. It was about twice the size of a typical magic-powered vessel.Â
“Lilia, that must be the new large-scale ship the kingdom is constructing.”Â
“So that’s the one? It’s hard to tell from here, but it looks massive.”Â
“Yeah. We should take a closer look later.”Â
As we chatted, we were guided into the lord’s mansion. Just as we suspected, not every ship was being attacked by the Sea Devil. However, ships were still being attacked every few days.Â
Despite this, the port remained busy with ships coming and going. Which meant there were significant profits to be made. If a ship was attacked, it was just seen as bad luck. There were even dubious items being sold as “Sea Devil Wards.”Â
“The Sea Devil has a round body with eight legs, correct?”Â
“Oh, you already know about it? Yes, that strange and eerie shape is why people call it a devil.”Â
If it appeared daily, we could deal with it quickly. But since it was unpredictable, this would be a bit of a challenge. For today, we would just survey the situation. It seemed like we’d be staying in Port Town Beaumont for a while.Â
After returning to our inn in the royal capital, we’d arrange to secure a room and start looking for lodging in the port town. Things were about to get busy.
