Episode 4: The First Reward
We safely returned to the town of Colibri and headed straight to the Adventurers’ Guild reception counter. It seemed that more adventurers were returning to town, making the guild noisier.
“Fran-san, we hunted Forest Wolves and collected magic stones. Please appraise them.”
“Welcome back. Looks like all three of you are safe. Oh, and the one behind you must be Fel-san. Did you already become friends?”
Fran-san noticed me standing a little apart from the group. I could have gone to another available counter, but I wanted to see how they reported their quest.
“We met just outside the forest. He seemed like a rookie adventurer, so we taught him a few things.”
Liner said this with a hint of pride.
“That’s good. Right now, what Fel-san needs most is experience as an adventurer. Please continue guiding him.”
“I don’t mind, but what do you mean by ‘just experience’?”
“Oh? Fel-san didn’t tell you? He’s a Silver Rank adventurer.”
“””Silver Rank!?”””
Three voices shouted in unison. Now that I thought about it, I hadn’t mentioned my rank at all. I completely forgot since no one asked. Liner, Luciana, and Bales all stared at me. Their eyes and mouths were wide open.
“W-We just barely ranked up to Copper… How does this make sense?”
“Does that mean he’s really that strong? He does have a Fairy with him, which is unusual…”
Liner and Luciana looked at me expectantly, waiting for an explanation. Bales, on the other hand, seemed to be the quiet type. Her facial expressions changed frequently. It made her fun to observe.
“Fel is a Sage, after all. Of course, he’s that skilled.”
“A S-Sage!?”
Before I could respond, Lilia declared this with a triumphant look. At her words, not only the three before us but also the surrounding adventurers reacted in shock.
“The Guild Master said that with enough experience, he could even reach Platinum Rank. That’s why we’re counting on you three to help guide Fel-san.”
Fran-san addressed the three, who were still frozen in place. Meanwhile, she was appraising the magic stones. Coins were placed on the table.
“This is your reward. Four Forest Wolf magic stones. Two silver coins and four small silver coins.”
“Huh? Oh, right, I confirm the amount. Thank you.”
Now freed from his stunned state, Liner checked the coins and put them into a pouch. It seemed he was their party leader. He looked dependable enough. So there shouldn’t be any issues.
“Now, let’s appraise Fel-san’s materials next.”
Following her instructions, I stepped forward and handed over the materials and Goblin magic stones. It wasn’t a particularly large amount.
“Let’s see… Goblin magic stones are worth two small silver coins each. Herbs are one copper coin per piece. Mana grass is five small silver coins per piece. Antidote grass is one small silver coin per piece.”
Herbs seemed pretty cheap. No wonder not many people bothered collecting them. But maybe they grew in abundance deep in the forest? Mana grass and antidote grass were harder to find, making them more valuable.
“The total comes to two silver coins and three small silver coins.”
She placed the money on the counter. After confirming the amount, I tucked it into my pouch. I wasn’t sure if this was a lot for a day’s work. But since Liner’s group could survive on their previous reward, it seemed sufficient.
“Mana grass… That’s valuable. Maybe we should gather materials while hunting monsters.”
“That’s easier said than done, Bales. Mana grass isn’t something you just stumble upon. Searching while fighting monsters sounds unrealistic.”
“Liner is right. And gathering only herbs is inefficient—they take up space and aren’t worth much. It’s better to focus on defeating monsters and collecting magic stones.”
Luciana had a point. The only reason I managed to gather so many materials was because of my Analyze magic. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to collect this much in such a short time.
“Alright, we’ll take our leave now.”
“Oh, see you later, Fel. Or would you prefer ‘Fel-san’?”
“No way. Cut it out with the jokes, Liner.”
“Haha, figured as much. Alright, we’ll be off then.”
With that, Liner and his party headed up the stairs of the Adventurers’ Guild. It seemed that all three of them, like me, were renting rooms at the guild.
After watching them go, I left the Adventurers’ Guild.
I walked through the town of Colibri, bathed in the colors of the setting sun. As expected of a multi-racial nation, the Kingdom of Fortune was home to people of various races. It was completely different from my homeland. There, only humans were valued. Any non-human race existed only as slaves. That was a place I never wanted to return to.
I shook my head, trying to dispel the unpleasant memories. I browsed the shops along the street. There were stores selling alchemically-made potions, clothing, magic tools, and even paper and ink.
The street stalls were packed with fresh vegetables and fruits, while food stands gave off delicious aromas. That one was grilling skewered chicken. And over there, they were selling steak. It looked like they served alcohol as well.
I couldn’t decide what to eat. I wished I could ask Lilia. But Fairies apparently didn’t eat food. Instead, she sustained herself with my magical energy.
Ever since learning that, I had avoided discussing meals with Lilia. It felt selfish, like I was the only one enjoying food.
“Lilia, I think I’ll get those skewers over there.”
“Sounds good. Aren’t you going to drink?”
“Nah, water’s fine. I can make it with magic for free, after all.”
Besides, it wouldn’t feel right to enjoy something alone.
I smiled at Lilia. Then, I bought some skewered chicken from the stall and quickly ate at an open seat.
“Fel, you don’t have to rush just because of me, you know?”
“I’m not rushing.”
“Really?”
Lilia gave me a suspicious side-eye. Feeling awkward, I looked away.
“I swear.”
“Listen, Fel. It’s not like we Fairies *can’t* eat food, you know?”
“Wait, really!?”
Surprised by her unexpected revelation, I stared at her in disbelief. Lilia narrowed her eyes, crossed her arms, and tapped her little finger against them.
“I knew you were holding back because of me. Listen up, okay? We can eat food. But it doesn’t do anything for us. It’s like a luxury item—completely unnecessary.”
“Then let’s eat together from now on!”
I declared with enthusiasm.
“That’s fine. But it’ll cost extra, you know?”
“No problem! I’m going to start earning tons of money!”
“Alright then, I’ll take you up on that.”
Lilia raised both hands in a resigned manner.
Yes! Now I could enjoy meals with Lilia without feeling guilty. I had no idea how much she would eat. But with today’s earnings, I could easily afford food for two.
In an unusually good mood—so much so that it even made Lilia a bit uneasy—I happily made my way back to the Adventurers’ Guild.
