Episode 42: Special ItemÂ
“Whew, the questioning is finally over.”Â
“That took a while. They seemed really excited because the magic we used was something they’d never heard of before.”Â
“Yeah, but we didn’t give them the full details.”Â
“That’s for the best, I’m sure.”Â
At last, we were freed from Guild Master Raffaello’s questioning and left the Adventurers’ Guild. The sky was already starting to darken. It might be best to grab dinner before heading back to the inn.Â
“Tonight, we’re having oyakodon!”Â
“Sounds great! I’m looking forward to it!”Â
The oyakodon was delicious. According to Lilia, the broth had a strong, rich flavor. I couldn’t really tell, though.Â
“Oh, Fel-san, you’re back early.”Â
When we arrived at the inn, the owner greeted us with a smile.Â
“Yes, we were lucky. The target monster appeared right away.”Â
“What kind of monster did you go after?”Â
“The Sea Devil.”Â
“The Sea Devil?! You actually managed to take that thing down? I’ve never heard of anyone doing that, even in the East!”Â
The innkeeper was stunned that we had defeated the Sea Devil. It seemed to be a menace even in the eastern seas. Maybe the ocean was more dangerous than I had thought.Â
After paying the extra fee for our stay, we received our room key. The scent of tatami greeted us as we entered.Â
“Ahh, this smell is kind of addicting. Alright, time for a bath.”Â
“Yeah, even though you used Clean-Up magic on me, I still feel kinda sticky.”Â
“Should we just heat the water with magic?”Â
“Let’s do that.”Â
I filled the hinoki bathtub with water using magic. I then carefully heated it with fire magic. In just a few minutes, the bath was ready.Â
Already changed into her yukata, Lilia swiftly stripped down and dashed into the bath. As lively as ever.Â
I quickly followed. I washed up before sinking into the warm water. Of course, I helped wash Lilia, too.Â
“It’s nice that we finished the request faster than expected.”Â
“Yeah, we got lucky. I was worried we wouldn’t get to bathe for days.”Â
Lilia splashed her feet against the water’s surface. Hopefully, she wouldn’t start swimming. Backstroke in this small bath would be a bit… awkward.Â
“Tomorrow’s our day off. Any plans?”Â
“Hmm… How about we check in on that bearded blacksmith?”Â
“Good idea. Maybe our order is ready.”Â
I had requested custom-made tableware for Lilia. I was excited to see it. Also, I hadn’t expected freshly caught fish to be so delicious. I’d love to have some again.Â
“As our first step as Platinum Rank adventurers, I think we did pretty well.”Â
“I’d say so. Now the other adventurers will know just how strong you really are, Fel.”Â
“That would be nice.”Â
The fact that I had defeated the Sea Devil and delivered a massive magic stone would surely spread among the adventurers who witnessed it. That should put an end to anyone underestimating me. I’d rather avoid unnecessary conflicts.Â
Tomorrow, I’d visit Rugald-san the blacksmith, then relax at a stylish café in the royal capital. Thinking about that, I let the warmth of the bath soak away my fatigue. I was starting to really enjoy bath time. It felt like my exhaustion was melting away.Â
After stepping out, I retrieved some fruit juice from my magic bag. I cooled it slightly with magic before taking a sip. I poured some for Lilia as well, using a cup made from a nutshell.Â
“We should get you a properly sized cup soon.”Â
“Yeah, since I have to hold this one the whole time, I can’t drink at my own pace.”Â
Saying that, she downed her drink in one gulp. I see… So that’s why she always drinks alcohol in one go. Once she gets her own cup, she might be able to enjoy her drinks more. I was looking forward to it.Â
As soon as I got into bed, Lilia dove into my arms. She slipped inside my yukata. She must have used up a lot of magic today. I could feel the warmth of our skin pressing together.Â
—Â
After a good night’s sleep, we decided to visit Rugald-san’s workshop. Since it would be rude to arrive too early, we spent some time wandering the back streets until around ten o’clock.Â
Along the way, we discovered several quiet, cozy cafés. Unlike the ones frequented by adventurers, these seemed to be popular among the local residents.Â
“How about we have lunch at this café?”Â
“Oh, this place looks pretty stylish. Do they have desserts?”Â
“Seems like it. They have something called pudding—looks like a brand-new dessert. I’d love to try it.”Â
“Pudding……..… That does sound intriguing.”
As we continued our conversation, before we knew it, it was already ten o’clock. As always, a wave of heat radiated from Rugald-san’s workshop> it was accompanied by the rhythmic clanking of metal.Â
I couldn’t wield a sword. But I enjoyed looking at them. Maybe I should get a decorative sword someday?Â
“Good morning, Rugald-san.”Â
“Hey there, bushy beard!”Â
“Oh, you’re here. The item’s finished.”Â
Rugald-san grinned. He was clearly pleased with his work. It must be one of his masterpieces. Excited, I followed him into the back of the workshop.Â
“Here it is.”Â
“Amazing! Are these all made of silver!? Even though they’re so small, they look just as good as the ones sold in stores!”Â
“Not bad, bushy beard. As expected! Look, Fel! It fits perfectly in my hand. This is the best!”Â
Lilia was overjoyed as she held the cup. On the table in front of us were a set of small dining utensils—cups, plates, even a knife and fork. I had no idea how he had managed to craft them so precisely. Did he even have a hammer small enough for this kind of work?Â
“Rugald-san, this knife actually looks sharp.”Â
“What are you talking about? It’s *properly* sharp.”Â
“That’s incredible!”Â
As expected of a dwarf, he didn’t cut any corners. I couldn’t wait to try these out. I’d make sure to use them during lunch.Â
“Rugald-san, thank you so much. Here’s the payment for Lilia’s custom items.”Â
“Oh, thanks—wait, a whole platinum coin?! Isn’t that too much?!”Â
Rugald-san’s eyes widened in shock at the sight of the platinum coin.Â
“It’s fine. I still have about ninety left.”Â
“Wait a second… You’re that rumored Dragon Slayer, aren’t you?”Â
“Yeah, I am.”Â
“I see. That explains a lot. Well then, I’ll gladly accept it. If you ever need anything, come by anytime. I’ll help however I can.”Â
“Thank you. I’ll count on you when the time comes.”Â
We shook hands firmly. Rugald-san’s craftsmanship was the real deal. And it was worth maintaining a good relationship with him. I might need him to make more custom items for Lilia in the future.Â
Leaving the workshop, we headed toward the marketplace. I wanted to buy some fruit to test Lilia’s new knife.Â
“Oh, how about this apple?”Â
“Looks delicious. Let’s get that one.”Â
“Excuse me, one apple, please.”Â
After purchasing the apple, we sat on a bench in a nearby park. I used my own knife to slice it and placed the pieces onto Lilia’s specially made plate. I tried cutting them as small as possible, but they still seemed a bit big for her.Â
“Alright, let’s see… Ohhh! It cut right through so smoothly!”Â
I watched carefully. Lilia had indeed sliced the apple effortlessly with her tiny knife. When I handed her a fork, she skillfully used it to eat.Â
Finally, I could serve food that matched Lilia’s small mouth. Until now, she had to bite into larger pieces.Â
“Ufufu, this is great. I love it. Maybe I should learn proper table manners too?”Â
“Yeah, it might be a good idea before we ever dine with the king.”Â
“In that case, I’ll need to practice so I don’t embarrass you, Fel.”Â
We exchanged smiles and laughed. Though, realistically, that kind of day would probably never come. Probably.
