The Ultimate Sage Who Faked Incompetence and Was Disinherited Just Wants to Enjoy His New Life! - Episode 46: Ogre King
Episode 46: Ogre King
The roar from deep within the forest grew louder and louder. The nearby trees seemed to tremble in fear. They were rustling noisily.
The remaining Ogres froze in place and turned toward the source of the sound.
“This is our chance! Let’s wipe out the rest of the Ogres while we can!”
Jill-san, the swordsman, gracefully swung his sword. He was slicing through the Ogres. Meanwhile, Ardan-san was wielding a massive shield. He smashed the Ogres into mincemeat with sheer brute force.
Elise-san, the healer, simply cheered them on with, “You can do it! Keep going!” …Yeah, she wasn’t going to be much help in battle.
The defeated Ogres vanished into particles of light, leaving behind magic stones.
“Hey, don’t just stand there! We’re fighting too! Flame Arrow!”
“R-Right! Water Mist!”
Making the same mistake twice is unacceptable—this is a basic rule for Platinum Rank adventurers. I focused on backing up Lilia. The heat from our last attack had been brutal. Lesson learned: don’t cluster fire magic in one spot.
“You two are amazing!”
Elise-san called out in admiration. Unlike Jill-san and Ardan-san, who were taking down one Ogre at a time, Lilia and I were defeating multiple at once. Yeah, I guess that was impressive.
“I’m a Sage, and she’s a Fairy. This much is expected.”
“A Sage and a Fairy? What an incredible team!”
As we chatted, all the Ogres had already been wiped out.
“Whew, that was a tough fight.”
Just as Jill-san was about to wrap things up, an Ogre nearly twice the size of the others emerged from the forest. It was knocking down trees as it approached. Its face was filled with rage. Was it furious about its fallen kin? Or was it just angry about being ignored? I had no idea if monsters even had emotions.
“The boss has arrived. Now the real fight begins.”
Ardan-san raised his shield again. And I noticed Elise-san discreetly casting a fatigue recovery magic on the two of them. Fatigue recovery magic was even harder to use than healing magic. Not bad.
“What the hell is that thing?”
“That’s an Ogre King.”
“You know about it, Lilia!?”
Lilia shot me a glare that screamed, “Seriously, knock it off.” Come on, I just wanted to say that line once.
“An Ogre King, huh? We really ran into something big.”
“So, it’s ranked above an Ogre General? This is getting exciting!”
“You battle maniac… This is exactly why you make things harder for us.”
Despite the massive beast standing before them, they remained unfazed. Maybe Platinum Rank adventurers really were a little unhinged. If that Ogre King hit someone with its enormous club, they’d be obliterated.
“Alright, we’ll take the lead. You guys provide support.”
“Why is Jill taking charge when he’s not even the leader? Whatever. We’ll create an opening—hit it when you get the chance.”
“Understood!”
After exchanging nods, Jill-san and Ardan-san charged at the Ogre King.
“Hey, if we just blast it with magic, this fight will be over in one shot.”
“…..…”
“Wait… Are you two… really that powerful?”
Elise-san’s innocent eyes sparkled with curiosity. I guess we probably are.
“I wonder which is stronger, the Water Dragon or this thing?”
“Oh, definitely the Water Dragon. An Ogre King would be sent flying with just a flick of its tail.”
Lilia puffed out her growing chest with confidence.
“Then this’ll be over in one hit.”
“Wait… don’t tell me you guys are the adventurers who took down the Water Dragon?”
“That’s right. Fel defeated it—with a single spell.”
Lilia answered with a proud grin, as if she had done it herself.
“That’s amazing! If you use that spell, the Ogre King will be history!”
“Well, yeah, that’s true, but… wouldn’t that be a bad idea?”
I glanced at Lilia for confirmation. She furrowed her brow in thought.
“………Yeah, you’re right. We might be fine, but the entire forest around us would be gone.”
“Wait, what kind of magic did you two use!?”
Elise-san let out a scream. Beyond her, I could see Jill-san and Ardan-san still locked in battle.
Wait… was this really the time for this conversation?
The Ogre King swung its massive club down at Ardan-san with both hands. It looked like he was about to be crushed—but Ardan-san effortlessly blocked it with his shield.
That must have been a full-force swing. The Ogre King froze for a brief moment. It was shocked that its attack had been stopped. Jill-san didn’t miss the opening—he lunged forward and sliced off the monster’s right arm.
The Ogre King roared, raising its left arm to slam Jill-san down. But before the club could reach him, Ardan-san used his shield like a hammer and knocked the weapon aside.
With only its left arm remaining, the Ogre King started swinging wildly. Jill-san and Ardan-san had no choice but to step back.
The distance between them and the Ogre King widened. This was our chance.
“Flame Ball!”
A massive sphere of fire engulfed the Ogre King. It turned it into particles of light in an instant. That part was good—but the spell didn’t stop there. The flames shot past the target and crashed into the forest behind it. With a loud boom, a pillar of fire rose into the sky.
“What the hell were you thinking?! The forest is going to burn down! Water Ball!”
“S-Sorry! Water Ball!”
Panicked, Lilia and I rushed to put out the fire. Maybe I should have gone with Fireball instead? But then, we might not have defeated the Ogre King…
“What a mess.”
“That was flashy.”
“Not sure that’s really the issue here… But at least the Ogres are taken care of.”
I could hear their voices behind me. But none of them seemed eager to help. Apparently, Elise-san couldn’t use any magic other than healing. And the other two weren’t spellcasters either.
In the end, it was just Lilia and me working to put out the fire.
“Honestly! Flame Arrow already set things on fire everywhere. And yet, you thought using Flame Ball was a good idea?”
“I’m sorry…”
I sat in seiza. I was forced to kneel in front of Lilia. The other three casually sipped coffee as they watched us. I wanted some coffee too.
“Come on, Lilia-chan, that’s enough. Let’s just sit down and have some coffee together.”
“Elise-san, Fel needs to understand what he did wrong. Otherwise, he’ll just end up doing something reckless again.”
Lilia puffed up, fuming. Was she this upset because it was the second time I’d caused trouble with magic?
“You’re so overprotective, little one. Just say sorry, and it’s all good.”
“Who are you calling ‘little one’?! Who?!”
Lilia snapped at Jill-san. Good, if I could just keep the attention off me…
“I actually get where Lilia’s coming from. If we don’t train him properly, he might end up like Jill—beyond saving.”
“Who the hell are you calling beyond saving?!”
Now Jill-san turned on Ardan-san, and Lilia’s anger refocused on them instead of me. Perfect.
“Ardan’s right. If Fel turns into another Jill, we’re in trouble.”
“Hold on, little one, what kind of image do you have of me?!”
“A brute.”
“That checks out.” “Yeah, that sounds about right.”
“…………”
Jill-san fell silent. Apparently, being labeled a brute by his own teammates actually stung.
I, on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky—Lilia’s lecture continued for a long time. And honestly, I think it lasted even longer because of Jill-san.
