Episode 56: Suspicion and ReportÂ
A thin layer of ice remained on Jill’s body. It was as if nothing had happened. As expected of Freeze Armor.Â
Since we had checked its durability in advance, we knew this would happen. But even after charging into that ball of fire, Jill seemed completely unharmed. Meanwhile, the surrounding trees had already turned to charcoal and crumbled.Â
“Jill, wasn’t it hot?”Â
“I’m fine. No problem at all. Actually, Fel’s Flame Ball during testing felt hotter.”Â
“Hey, hey, what kind of experiments have you guys been doing?”Â
Ardan looked exasperated. With an awkward smile, realizing we might have gone a bit overboard, we headed toward the large magic stone left behind by the Big Fire Turtle.Â
There, Lilia was frowning deeply. Her brow was furrowed in concern.Â
“Lilia, what’s wrong?”Â
“Fel, look at this. What do you think?”Â
“Well… it just looks like a normal magic stone to me?”Â
To my eyes, it appeared just like any other magic stone I had seen many times before—a black rock that occasionally shimmered in rainbow colors.Â
Lilia let out a deep breath.Â
“This magic stone has the same shape as a Fire Turtle.”Â
“I see… So the Big Fire Turtle and the Fire Turtle are the same monster, and its magic stone just grew larger?”Â
“That’s right. But that’s exactly what’s strange. Normally, that shouldn’t be possible.”Â
Hmm… Lilia, having lived for a long time, might be able to recognize how unusual this is. But I honestly have no idea.Â
“Is it bad for a magic stone to grow larger?”Â
“If the magic stone changes shape, then no matter how big it gets, it’s fine—it would just mean it became a different monster. But if the same-shaped magic stone grows bigger, it can only mean that the monster itself has grown.”Â
Humans grow. So wouldn’t it be natural for monsters to grow too? …Wait a second. The monsters we’ve encountered so far, even if they were of the same species, always had identical appearances—same shape, same size. There was never any variation. That means monsters don’t grow. There are no individual differences.Â
“If that’s the case, then yeah, it’s definitely strange. Is there a way to make a monster bigger?”Â
“I’ve never heard of anything like that… But…”Â
“But…?”Â
“If someone forcibly infused a monster with external magic power, it might grow. But that would require an absolutely enormous amount of magic. It wouldn’t be possible under normal circumstances.”Â
So, while it’s normally impossible, it *could* be done. But who would do something like that?Â
The fact that the Big Fire Turtle was found in the elven sanctuary… could it mean the elves did this? Since every elf possesses magic power, if they pooled their energy, they could generate an immense amount of magic. But would they really do something like this?Â
“Lilia, let’s report this to everyone for now. We won’t find an answer by just thinking about it ourselves.”Â
“You’re right. Let’s do that.”Â
We stored the large magic stone in a magic pouch and hurried over to the others. They were checking their injuries and equipment. Fortunately, there weren’t any major injuries. But Ardan had suffered a slight burn from his overheated iron ball. However, by the time we arrived, Elise had already healed him.Â
“What’s with those faces? Did you fail to retrieve the magic stone?”Â
“No, that’s not it. We just want everyone to hear what Lilia has to say.”Â
The three of them exchanged glances before sitting down. While sipping coffee, Lilia and I took turns explaining what we had discovered. We provided as much additional information as possible.Â
“So, there’s a possibility that the Big Fire Turtle was created by the elves?”Â
“It’s just a possibility. Even if they did something like that, destroying the forest wouldn’t benefit the elves in any way.”Â
“Could there be some kind of factional conflict among the elves? I’ve never heard of anything like that, though……..…”Â
Once again, we all fell into deep thought, murmuring “Hmm…” This theory seemed far-fetched. A more plausible explanation would be that some other group was trying to destroy the elves.Â
“There’s no point in us adventurers overthinking this. Complicated matters like these are for the Adventurers’ Guild or the kingdom to figure out. Our job is just to complete the requests we’re given.”Â
Jill had a point. No matter how much we speculated, it would only be guesswork. We wouldn’t find any answers on our own.Â
In that case, it would be best to return to the Adventurers’ Guild as soon as possible and report our findings.
“Yeah, you’re right. There’s no point in overthinking it. We need to get back quickly and report accurate information.”Â
“Yeah, exactly. But I don’t think it’s wrong to share this as a possibility. It’ll help broaden the scope of their investigation.”Â
The bitterness of the coffee cleared my foggy mind. Instead of dwelling on uncertainties, the priority now was to stay alert and return safely.Â
“The direction the Big Fire Turtle was heading toward… that would be Mount Magna, right? Could there be something there?”Â
“Mount Magna… If I remember correctly, that’s the mountain where the Fire Spirit is worshiped, right, Lilia?”Â
“That’s right. I’m surprised you know that. Did I ever mention it to you?”Â
“No, I just recalled reading about it in a book a long time ago.”Â
Mount Magna had a large lava pool near its summit. According to legend, an island existed within the lava pool, and that was where the Fire Spirit resided. Of course, no one had ever crossed the lava pool. So it remained just a myth.Â
“We should include that in our report as well. There’s a chance that someone might try to silence us. Stay on guard.”Â
At Ardan’s warning, everyone nodded silently. To survive, we had to remain cautious of our surroundings.Â
However, in the end, our concerns turned out to be unnecessary. We reached the Elf Kingdom without incident.Â
When we reported the successful subjugation at the Hunting Guild, the guild master was overjoyed.Â
“So this is its magic stone? It’s enormous. To think a monster with a magic stone this large was in the sacred land… So, what do you plan to do with it?”Â
“We’re planning to sell it in the Kingdom of Fortune. That’s probably the only place where we’ll find a buyer.”Â
“Yeah, that makes sense.”Â
The guild master laughed. But in reality, that wasn’t the full truth. We also planned to report the Big Fire Turtle incident to the Adventurers’ Guild in the royal capital. Since this magic stone would serve as evidence, we couldn’t sell it just yet.Â
Staying in the Elf Kingdom any longer and being labeled as “those who stepped into the sacred land” would only stir up unnecessary trouble. With that in mind, we quickly departed.Â
—
A few days later.Â
We safely returned to the royal capital of the Fortune Kingdom and headed straight to the Adventurers’ Guild.Â
“Sorry, but can you call the Guild Master? We have something important to discuss.”Â
“Again, Ardan-san? The Guild Master’s stomach is going to develop ulcers at this rate.”Â
“He’ll be fine. This kind of thing is probably just another day at the office for him.”Â
Despite expressing concern for the Guild Master’s health, the receptionist quickly arranged a meeting. We were soon guided to a room in the back.Â
“It looks like you successfully completed your quest. Good work. So, what brings you here?”Â
“Guild Master, take a look at this. What do you think?”Â
At Ardan’s signal, I placed the Big Fire Turtle’s magic stone on the table.Â
“This is… incredibly large. But this shape… I feel like I’ve seen it before……….… No way, is this a Fire Turtle’s magic stone!? That’s impossible!”Â
“Oh, as expected from the elven grandpa. You noticed it right away,”Â
Lilia said happily.Â
Hearing that, Guild Master Raffaello took a deep breath.Â
“Could you explain this in detail?”
