Episode 65: A Request from the Guild Master
For a few days after the ruin investigation ended, we spent our time lazing around as much as we could. Since we had plenty of reward money, we could go shopping without holding back. We also had magic bags. So even if we bought useless personal items, it wasn’t a problem.
“Fel, aren’t you buying a bit too much?”
Lilia looked at me with a sticky gaze. Apparently, even she couldn’t overlook it anymore. Scattered around her line of sight were magical tools that looked like junk.
“I’m thinking of collecting magical tools from all over the world.”
“Most of those can be replaced with magic. So isn’t it a waste? Well, since there’s nothing else to spend on, I don’t mind if you do whatever you want… By the way, what happened with the house? The house.”
“Ah, the house. Isn’t the current inn good enough? They do the cleaning and laundry, and there’s even a bath. I don’t feel the need to rent a whole house.”
A standalone house where I’d have to take care of everything myself just feels like a hassle. Still, nobles all compete to own splendid mansions. There are even rumors about nobles going bankrupt because of that.
“That’s true, but… Don’t you need some kind of goal, Fel?”
“A goal, huh… Maybe you’re right.”
A goal……….. I do have one. But the chance of achieving it is extremely low. Even though if I give up, it’ll all be over, I already feel like I’ve given up. I wish at least a ray of hope would appear.
I crossed my arms and looked at Lilia, who was floating in front of me. No matter when I look, she’s so cute and beautiful.
“Fel, you here? There’s an additional reward.”
“Ardan, you went to the Adventurers’ Guild? You should’ve called me, I would’ve gone with you.”
There was a knock at the door.
Ardan, the leader of the party, has a habit of trying to do everything by himself. I want to do something about how that only increases his burden. But that’s difficult. He always goes to the Adventurers’ Guild without telling anyone.
“Don’t worry about it. It was on the way. Here, the reward.”
“Huh? This much!?”
“Well, of course. The country is calling it ‘the greatest discovery in the past hundred years,’ apparently.”
Was it really that great of a discovery? I do think the airship discovery was amazing, but I didn’t think it was *that* much. Lilia just reacted with a “hmm.” For Lilia, a hundred years isn’t that big a deal. Her sense of time is completely different from ours.
“Did the airship start working?”
“Seems like it. Among the relics from the ruins, they miraculously found documents about the airship.”
“In that pile of paper scraps? Amazing they managed to research it.”
They must have been decaying along with the wooden shelves. Maybe there’s even a magic spell to restore paper? The researchers might have created a new kind of magic just for cases like this.
“Agreed. I’m glad we didn’t touch them carelessly. The Guild Master even praised us for that. Said he was glad he left it to us.”
“Looks like we’ve made a name for ourselves again.”
“No doubt about it.”
We laughed together. The ruin investigation was quite tough. But it seems the reward was worth it.
“Oh, right. There’s also been some development about the Big Fire Turtle we defeated. Apparently, it’s still being debated among scholars. But the Guild Master said there might be some movement soon.”
“Some movement? Did something happen?”
“Not sure about that. But from the way the Guild Master acted, it doesn’t look like good news.”
Ardan looked at me quietly in the eyes. Looks like something is going on. I gently stroked Lilia, who had clung to my face, to reassure her.

After that, several more peaceful days passed. During that time, we didn’t take on any Platinum Rank quests as a team. Each of us just took on whatever quests we liked.
Jill went out on a monster subjugation quest, and Ardan was doing research on cooking. Eliza was putting her amazing skills to use as a temporary staff member at the capital’s healing institute.
We really are a free-spirited party. As for me and Lilia, we were doing collection requests, monster hunts, and food hunts around the capital.
In the middle of all that, it seemed something big had happened. During our usual dinner time, when everyone gathered to eat together, Ardan brought it up.
“Today, when I went to the Adventurers’ Guild, I heard a story that the Big Fire Turtle appeared again.”
“Huh, again?”
Lilia opened her eyes wide and raised her voice. It seemed she didn’t expect it to show up again. Even if monsters grow huge by coincidence, she probably didn’t expect it to happen so repeatedly.
“So, Ardan, what happened to it?”
“Apparently, a Platinum Rank adventurer managed to defeat it somehow. But it seems he was badly injured and won’t be able to move for a while.”
I was curious how that adventurer defeated it. But it didn’t look like he came out of it unharmed. That being the case, for us to defeat it with just Ardan getting light burns — aren’t we pretty amazing? Maybe we’re among the stronger ones even among Platinum Rank adventurers.
“Was it in the Elven sacred grounds again?”
“Just as Fel said. It was in the sacred grounds again. However, it was a different location from where we defeated the last one.”
I wonder if some kind of abnormality is occurring in the sacred grounds. If it appeared in the same spot, it might be easier to find the cause. But if it’s in a different area, we might not be able to find it.
“Do they know where it appeared from?”
“Well, it seems they’ve concluded that a normal Fire Turtle might have grown huge.”
“There’s no way that could—”
Lilia was probably about to say “There’s no way that could happen.” But she suddenly stopped moving.
What’s wrong, Lilia? Did she maybe remember something? Lilia looked down and went silent. Feeling uneasy, I gently pulled her into my arms. She didn’t resist.
She seemed to be pretty shocked.
“We couldn’t get any more information. Or rather, it felt like they couldn’t speak carelessly about it. If we want to know more, they said we’d have to accept the request.”
“A request? What kind of request?”
Jill met our eyes. He then finally looked at Ardan.
“Well, it seems they’ll explain the request once everyone is present.”
“So that means it’s a direct request to us, isn’t it?”
“Exactly.”
Ardan crossed his arms and closed his eyes. He seemed to be thinking about something.
“Hey now, isn’t that the kind of request they should give to an Orichalcum or Mithril Rank party, not us?”
“This time, it seems they’re making it an official request from the Guild Master.”
“A request from the Guild Master……..”
That kind of request is hard to turn down. If it were an official request from the country, Orichalcum or Mithril Rank adventurers wouldn’t be able to refuse it. We avoided becoming Orichalcum or Mithril Rank for that very reason.
Choosing whose and what kind of request to accept — that was our unspoken rule.
But if it’s a request from the Adventurers’ Guild, which always looks after us, it’s hard to refuse. And if it’s from the Guild Master, who knows us well, that means he’s counting on us a lot. It would feel bad to betray that trust.
“What should we do?”
When Ardan opened his eyes, he looked straight at us. The moment Ardan brought this up, I kind of felt like we couldn’t say no.
“Let’s accept it.”
“Lilia?”
“I don’t really know why, but I feel like we have to accept it.”
With Lilia showing a rare serious expression, we all nodded together.
“All right, then it’s settled. Let’s go to the Adventurers’ Guild tomorrow.”
Ardan’s words carried a heavy tone.
