Episode 7: Adventurers Attack the Goblin SettlementÂ
“Is everyone ready?”Â
“I’m good.”Â
“Ready.”Â
“Anytime.”Â
“Should I just blast them with magic right away?”Â
Lilia was already eager for battle. But she had her suggestion rejected. We first needed to catch up with that trio. We moved as quickly and quietly as possible.Â
But we were just a little too late. The Goblin lookouts spotted them first.Â
A horn echoed through the forest. Apparently, Goblins became more intelligent when they formed settlements. The sudden noise made the three adventurers ahead stop in their tracks.Â
“H-Huh?”Â
“What’s going on? What just happened!?”Â
They readied their weapons and looked around. But they hadn’t realized the presence of the Goblins yet.Â
At this point, stealth was no longer necessary. Liner raised his voice.Â
“Turn back! There’s a Goblin settlement up ahead!”Â
Shouting, we rushed forward to join them. From deep in the forest, more and more Goblins appeared. It seemed they had been alerted by the horn and were now emerging from the settlement.Â
We quickly regrouped with the startled adventurers. The Goblins kept advancing toward us. Bales fired an arrow at the leading Goblin, piercing its head. It vanished into shimmering light.Â
“Why is there a Goblin settlement here!?”Â
“Who was the idiot that said we should go deeper into the forest because there were no Goblins?!”Â
“Hey, if you’re gonna fight, do it after we survive this! Here they come!”Â
Judging by their conversation, they were probably the lowest-ranked adventurers—Iron Rank. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be out here hunting Goblins. They weren’t exactly profitable.Â
A Goblin leapt from the bushes. It was only to be cut down in a single stroke by Liner. Another one that tried to escape was pierced by Luciana’s Stone Arrow.Â
“More incoming!”Â
Before Bales even finished speaking, five Goblins charged out. Lilia and I fired Wind Arrows in unison, shredding them all at once. The attack also obliterated the bushes and knocked down several trees.Â
Of course, we held back.Â
“Fel, you really are a Sage, huh?”Â
“Ahaha… well, that’s just something Lilia keeps saying on her own.”Â
With the view now clear, Bales swiftly picked off Goblins with her arrows. Any that managed to slip past her were immediately cut down by Liner. Luciana seemed to be conserving her magic—probably saving it for a stronger enemy.Â
As for the three adventurers, they weren’t much help. They were barely managing to defend themselves against lone Goblins attacking from another direction.Â
“It’s here. The Goblin General.”Â
Lilia’s eyes narrowed with excitement. Her lips curled into a smile. Why did she look so pleased? Was she the type to get excited about strong opponents?Â
“It’s huge. That thing would hurt if it punched someone.”Â
“If it punches you, Fel, I think its arm would break instead. Want to test it out?”Â
“Hey, Lilia, stop making me sound like some kind of monster.”Â
The Goblin General stomped towards us. Its breath was heavy and ragged. However, because of our banter, none of us seemed particularly tense.Â
That changed when it got closer. Everyone instinctively held their breath.Â
“I’ve never seen one before, but… damn, it’s big.”Â
Liner’s face paled. Luciana and Bales also looked tense. And for good reason—the Goblin General was twice the height of an adult human. It was nothing like the child-sized Goblins we had been dealing with. The difference in power between a regular Goblin and an evolved one was staggering.Â
“Alright, Fel, show it the difference in class!”Â
“Huh? Oh, uh… Got it. Wind Cutter!”Â
I obeyed Lilia’s command, unleashing my magic. If that massive body charged at us at full speed, we’d be in real trouble. Best to disrupt its momentum now.Â
A faintly glowing green blade of wind sliced cleanly through the Goblin General. It split it in half from head to toe.Â
It disintegrated into glowing particles, leaving behind a fist-sized magic stone. At the same time, the ground beneath it had a deep trench gouged into it. It stretched about the length of five adults. I hastily used earth magic to fill it in. All set.Â
“……………..Should we start calling you ‘Fel-san’ from now on?”
“That’s right. Show Fel some respect.”Â
“Cut it out.”Â
I grabbed Lilia, who was saying that with a smug look. And I covered her mouth. She mumbled something, but I wasn’t letting go.Â
While we were messing around, the rest of the group was busy hunting down the remaining Goblins.Â
—
“So, what do we do now?”Â
Liner asked while picking up the Goblin General’s magic stone. We hadn’t planned on it, but we ended up fighting a whole Goblin horde. Their numbers had been significantly reduced. And with the Goblin General gone, the immediate threat was over.Â
“We should just head straight to the Goblin settlement and wipe it out. If we leave it alone, another Goblin General might be born before an official extermination squad can get here.”
“Luciana’s suggestion makes sense. With Fel’s magic, we’ll be fine. I also think we should finish off the Goblin settlement.”
Everyone nodded. There didn’t seem to be any other threats. So it sounded like a good plan. If only Goblins were left, even the three Iron Rank adventurers should be able to handle them.Â
“Alright, let’s move out. You two, stay on guard.”Â
“Got it.”Â
“Understood.”Â
Soon, we arrived at the Goblin settlement. Despite the battle with the Goblin General and its forces, about twenty Goblins still remained.Â
The settlement had a few crude buildings and even a wooden fence of sorts around it.Â
“The plan is simple—wipe them all out. Let’s go.”Â
At Liner’s signal, we launched our attack. To the Goblins, we must have seemed like nothing more than raiders attacking their home. But this was the job of adventurers. It was simply the way things were.Â
The battle ended quickly. To ensure Goblins wouldn’t return, we completely destroyed the buildings and fences. We then burned everything to ash with fire magic. This should be enough. But we decided to report the location just in case.Â
Afterward, we returned to the town of Colibri with the three adventurers. We headed straight to the Adventurers’ Guild to make our report.Â
The guild receptionist Carrot-san looked both exasperated and impressed after hearing Liner’s account.Â
“I warned you so many times……… but I didn’t expect you to find a Goblin settlement this quickly. And you even took down a Goblin General.”Â
“Well… these guys got spotted by the Goblin sentries, so we had no choice…”Â
The three adventurers shrank under her gaze. Their lack of experience was obvious. If things had gone worse, injuries might not have been the worst outcome. Hopefully, they understood the dangers of adventuring now.Â
“Still, taking down a Goblin General in one shot with magic… I guess that’s to be expected from the ‘Sage and Fairy’ duo.”Â
She had been so shocked by my magic before that she probably wasn’t even surprised now. Come to think of it, maybe the reason she had us team up was as a safety measure.Â
Well, judging by how things went, even without my magic, Liner and the others could have probably handled it.Â
After receiving our reward, we disbanded on the spot. Thanks to the early completion bonus and the Goblin General’s magic stone, we earned one small gold coin and two silver coins. That should be enough to afford a decent stay at an inn in town.
