Episode 73: At the Tavern
We had come to a tavern recommended by Ardan. The time was just a little past noon. There probably aren’t many adventurers who drink alcohol at this hour.
In front of us were lots of dishes lined up. It looked like we could take whatever we liked onto our own plates and eat.
“Well then, let’s toast to Fel’s recovery and to the safe completion of the request!”
“Cheers!”
Everyone clinked their glasses. Of course, Lilia’s cup had fruit water in it. We can’t let Lilia drink alcohol in the daytime. She’ll start undressing right away. And naturally, there wasn’t a cup for Pii-chan. It’s shaped like a bird, so it can’t be helped.
“It was tough, Fel. His Majesty the King said he’d make us Orichalcum Rank.”
“Yeah, that was tough. We managed to settle it by saying, ‘We can’t decide without everyone being present,’ but it was really close.”
Ardan and Elise spoke with heavy voices. It seemed like His Majesty the King wanted to keep us in this country no matter what. Even though doing that would have the opposite effect. Is he really that desperate?
They were probably remembering that moment—their brows were furrowed. I’m glad I wasn’t there. If I had been, maybe I couldn’t have refused.
“Thanks to Fel not being there, we managed to get out of it. If we became Orichalcum Rank, they’d just use us however they wanted.”
“I think doing that would only make us look at them worse, though.”
“That’s true, but this time, they offered a lot—like giving us money every month, supplying equipment from the country, even preparing a place for us to live.”
Looks like they tried the strategy of luring adventurers with money and goods. But I don’t think that’s too attractive for adventurers at Platinum Rank. After all, we can easily earn that kind of money ourselves.
If they gave us weapons from the treasure vault, maybe Jill would bite, though.
“Because of this recent incident, people are starting to say that this world might be in a dangerous state. They probably want to gather as much power as they can. And since we’ve got a proven track record, even more so.”
“About that…”
Even though I thought it might not be appropriate to say it during a celebration, I told everyone what I had just heard from Pii-chan. Because of that, the mood turned quiet.
“This planet’s anger, huh. Can we calm it down?”
“Probably not, right? It already seems to be in motion.”
Elise replied to Ardan’s thought. I agreed with Elise. They already targeted the Fire Spirit. It’s better to assume something’s happening with the other Spirits too.
“So we just have to wait until the other Spirits make a move. And then calm them down like this time?”
“That means….… we’ll be the ones doing that, right?”
“Looks like it.”
“Knew it…”
It might be possible that someone else could calm the Spirits. But if we want to be sure, we’re probably the best suited for it. After all, we’ve already calmed the Fire Spirit.
“Pii-chan, do you know how the other Spirits are doing?”
“I don’t know. We are each separate beings. If we get close, I might be able to tell something, though.”
Pii-chan said apologetically. I patted its head. If something’s not possible, it’s just not possible. It can’t be helped. Still, this Firebird body isn’t hot at all. How does that work?
“Well then, until there’s another movement, we can’t do anything.”
“Yeah. For now, we’ll have to quietly gather information at the Adventurers’ Guild. Seems like the country is investigating too. So if they find something, they’ll probably contact us through the Guild.”
“Like this time. Hey, in a way, aren’t we basically tied to the country already?”
At Elise’s comment, everyone’s expression turned into a “that’s true” kind of face. And a heavy atmosphere started to fill the room. Isn’t this basically the same as being Orichalcum Rank? In that case, wouldn’t it be better to at least get the reward?
“By the way, a new airship is going to be built.”
Trying to lighten the heavy mood, Ardan changed the topic.
A new airship, huh. Looks like the documents left by the ancient people about airships have been fully deciphered. If the number of airships increases, maybe we’ll be able to buy one ourselves. After all, we do have the money.
“If airship travel becomes common, we’ll be able to get to faraway places quickly. If that happens, we could even adventure all over the world.”
“There must definitely be delicious things waiting on the yet unseen continent.”
Lilia seemed to be very interested in the new continent as well. Maybe she’s never been anywhere outside this continent? If that’s the case, it should be an exciting experience. It’ll surely be fun.
“If it’s just going to the neighboring continent, we’ll be able to go there soon. Looks like the large ship being built in the Port Town Beaumont is almost finished.”
“So that large ship is finally going to be completed. Still, I’m surprised Jill knew about that.”
It should’ve been mainly Ardan who was gathering information. Jill usually isn’t interested in anything but strong monsters. Which means—
“Of course. Seems like there are tons of strong monsters on the neighboring continent. Until recently, there were even some in the sea. But they seem to have disappeared. I thought there was no way to fight them on the sea, but I wonder how someone managed to fight them.”
Jill said that and folded his arms, starting to think.
Saying, “We’re the ones who defeated them,” felt kind of hard to say. Because Jill had his eyes on them, after all.
“The neighboring continent, huh. Might be good to try going there. Are there Spirits on that continent?”
“There aren’t any on the continent. But there should be a Water Spirit sleeping in the nearby sea. That’s if it hasn’t moved somewhere else.”
Pii-chan said that. So there’s a Water Spirit nearby. Given everything that’s happened, it might be good to go and check it out.
If we can make the first move, maybe we could calm the Water Spirit before it starts raging—just like we did with Pii-chan.
“I see. Then going to the neighboring continent sounds like a good idea.”
“Yeah, checking on the Water Spirit might be good too. If we get close enough, Pii-chan might notice something.”
“I’ll be useful!”
Pii-chan puffed up its chest. Maybe because it’s happy to be with us, it seemed full of energy. Whether it’s useful in a fight is still unknown, though.
“Nice, let’s go to the neighboring continent!”
“I’m also curious about the Water Spirit, and I think it’s worth going to check it out.”
“Yeah. I want to see what the neighboring continent is like, and besides, maybe… maybe something might happen…”
Lilia said that. And for some reason, she started fidgeting. What’s up, Lilia?
Wait—could it be she needs to pee?
Now that I think about it, I’ve never seen Lilia go to the bathroom. What’s up with that?
“Lilia, if you need the toilet, it’s over there?”
“That’s not it, you idiot!”
Lilia’s knee slammed into my cheek. A maiden’s heart is complicated.
I really don’t get what Lilia’s thinking.
Troubled, I looked toward Pii-chan.
Catching my gaze, Pii-chan gave a small nod.
“Boss lady, it’s *that*, right? You and big bro Fel are gonna—”
“Shut your beak!”
Before Pii-chan could finish, an incredibly fast spinning kick landed.
Then she started putting Pii-chan into a figure-four leglock.
As Pii-chan started screaming, I hurriedly stepped in to stop her.
In my hands, a trembling Pii-chan said:
“Big bro, I can’t say it myself. Please just figure it out……..”
I silently nodded.
Making Lilia mad would be bad. I’ve got to somehow figure this out.
