Episode 74: The Giant Ship
We began taking action in order to ride the giant ship and cross over to the neighboring continent.
First, we needed to know when the giant ship would be completed, and we also needed boarding tickets to ride it.
“Do you think we get the ship’s boarding tickets in Port Town Beaumont?”
“Since it’ll be the very first voyage after the giant ship’s completion, maybe nobles anticipated the demand for boarding tickets and they’re selling them in the royal capital.”
“Is it turning into a battle over tickets?”
If that’s the case, it’ll be a little troublesome. Getting enough tickets for everyone might be difficult.
If it goes badly, we could end up buying them at a price many times higher in an auction.
Maybe we should borrow the help of a noble?
But then again, if it takes that much effort, I wouldn’t feel like going anymore.
“Was there even any sale for ordinary citizens to begin with?”
“…Doesn’t seem like it, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Doesn’t seem like it.”
Each of us looked away—at the ceiling, at the wall, down at the floor—avoiding eye contact.
There probably aren’t any, right?
How many people does it even hold?
First, we need to investigate more about this giant ship.
“Let’s start with some investigation. For now, let’s head to Beaumont. We’ve taken a request from the lord there before, so maybe we can hear something. Plus, I know a fisherman from the port.”
“You sure have a lot of connections, Fel.”
“That’s right. It’s because Fel and I teamed up and beat the Sea Devil to a pulp!”
She stuck out her small fists left and right. She was seemingly reenacting the scene.
…Um, Lilia, we just sliced it up with the Ice Sword, right? We didn’t punch it.
“So you guys were the ones who took that thing down…”
Jill said, and Ardan and Elise nodded.
Looks like they understood and accepted it.
And so, we quickly headed to Port Town Beaumont.
It was faster to have Elise use magic on us so we could run, rather than ride a carriage. So we did that.
“Hey, aren’t you treating me too harshly? I’m the only one getting super tired here.”
When we arrived at Beaumont, Elise complained.
It’s true that Elise alone ends up using her stamina and magic power.
It can’t be helped, but she probably won’t accept that.
“Then I’ll carry you on my back. Oh, would you prefer a princess carry?”
“…I’ll run on my own.”
Elise immediately rejected Jill’s suggestion.
Looks like she doesn’t want to be carried by Jill.
Maybe she has a bad memory, or maybe she’s too aware of him as the opposite s3x?
“You three over there, what’s with those faces?”
Elise asked us with a scary smile.
Apparently, we were making some kind of face.
Probably a grinning one.
Seems like I wasn’t the only one imagining things.
“It’s fine, you don’t have to be embarrassed. We don’t mind at all.”
“That’s right. We won’t get in the way of your relationship, so please don’t worry about us!”
“That’s not it!”
Saying that, Elise started chasing the two of them.
But the two of them escaped by flying through the sky.
That’s a little unfair, isn’t it?
In that chaotic state, we first visited the lord’s manor.
Apparently, he remembered me as the one who defeated the Sea Devil. And though surprised, he welcomed us warmly.
“The giant ship, you say? I’ve also had many nobles contact me, asking if I could get them boarding tickets. But unfortunately, that giant ship is something the country is building. So I don’t have any authority over the tickets.”
He twisted his eyebrows and gave a bitter smile, looking apologetic.
That makes sense.
The huge magic stone needed to power that giant ship had been bought by the country.
Then there’s no doubt it’s being built by the nation.
Looks like we should contact the government.
“So that’s how it is. I was surprised that such a large ship could be built privately. But if the country is leading the project, it makes sense.”
“Sorry, Ardan. I’m the one who sold them the magic stone needed to move that giant ship. I completely forgot to mention that.”
The lord’s eyes widened.
He probably didn’t expect that I was the one who provided it.
Ardan and the others nodded and said, “I see,” in understanding.
“So then, the rumored Dragon Slayer, who subjugated the Water Dragon, was you, Fel-san. Um, may I have your autograph later?”
“Huh? Sure, I don’t mind……..”
“If possible, I’d like to have the autograph of the Fairy, Lilia-san, as well…”
“It’s fine, I don’t mind. It’s not like I’ll lose anything.”
I wonder why, it feels like things are heading in a strange direction.
Ardan and the others, who were watching us, gave a wry smile.
Yeah, it’s weird, isn’t it? I think so too.
I asked the lord what kind of ship the giant ship was.
As expected, he was curious about the giant ship being built at the port. And it seemed like he had gathered quite a bit of information.
“That giant ship is named Eleonora. I don’t know the exact number of people, but I hear the capacity is over a thousand. Its full length is more than three times that of a magic-powered ship. And it can sail by turning a total of six wheels, three on each side.”
“That’s huge. And I didn’t expect it to carry over a thousand people. But, why did they build such a big ship?”
My question was natural, and everyone’s attention turned to the lord.
Normally, like merchants do, it’s enough to form a fleet.
Is there a reason they needed to make it so large?
“It seems it’s to protect against Sea Devils. And not just Sea Devils. There are still other huge and terrifying monsters in the sea far from land. Even merchants coming from the East are risking their lives. Storms, monsters… one out of every ten ships gets attacked and sunk.”
“I see. So they made it bigger to avoid that, so it wouldn’t be sunk. If it becomes possible to sail safely, trade will flourish too.”
As I was understanding and nodding, Pii-chan suddenly said something ominous.
The Firebird speaking suddenly caught the lord’s eyes.
He looked like he wanted an autograph.
But probably, Pii-chan can’t write.
“Is that really the only reason? It can carry a thousand people at once, you know? If they were all armed soldiers, they could seize the opposing port, right? Conquer the port in one strike, and send in more troops safely afterward. I think it’s possible.”
Pii-chan nodded repeatedly.
Did the ancient people actually do that?
Right now, this ship called *Eleonora* is the only one of such a large scale in existence.
“Now that you say it… yeah. If they did something like that, it’d be a disaster.”
Elise seemed to be worried that “this planet” might make a move.
I think so too.
It’s not just me.
Everyone except the clueless lord must be thinking the same thing.
Everyone looked down.
The lord noticed the uneasy atmosphere.
“His Majesty the King would never do something like that. Right now, goods from eastern countries are popular. So maybe he wants to use this opportunity to build a friendly relationship and get more of them transported here. Imports from the eastern country can be sold at high prices to other nations on this continent, after all.”
The lord said it wouldn’t be used for war.
Right now, maybe that’s true.
But, what about the future? No one knows.
It’s a little worrying.
If the magic stone I provided becomes the trigger for war, that’s no joke.
Maybe Lilia got worried too, because she clung tightly to me.
Because Pii-chan said such ominous things.
But from Pii-chan’s perspective, maybe it’s afraid that history will repeat itself.
It was once controlled by “this planet’s” will and tried to destroy the world.
So it’s not just someone else’s problem.
Right now, it’s merged with me, so I think it’ll be okay… probably.
