Episode 76: The Sea Voyage on the Eleonora
“It was easier to get the boarding passes than I thought.”
“Maybe that old elf guy pulled some strings behind the scenes?”
“Yeah, that might be possible. But it’s a big help for us. We still have about seven days before the Eleonora departs. I’d like to get everything we need during that time. Any opinions?”
In the lounge of the Nagomi Inn, we huddled our heads together. Naturally, all of us have traveled by ship before. Though that was on magic-powered ships, the massive ship Eleonora is just a larger version. So there shouldn’t be much difference.
“Since the ship is bigger, maybe it won’t shake as much? If that’s the case, we probably don’t need to worry about seasickness.”
“It had six big masts. And if anything happens, the wheels will spin. I think the chance of getting stranded at sea is low… But just in case, should we bring food and drinks too?”
“Yeah. Like Lilia said, it might be good to stuff some food into the magic bag just in case.”
“I hope that doesn’t attract bad luck…”
“Don’t jinx it, Jill.”
I wonder how many days the huge magic stone, which is the power source, can keep the wheels spinning? I don’t think it’ll only last a few hours. They’ll probably load a bunch of small magic stones for refilling the energy. So I’d like to believe it won’t run out easily.
“Fel’s right. A lot of nobles will be on board. And if anything happens, the food will probably be given to the nobles first. There’s a chance it won’t get around to us.”
“Well, if the food runs out, we can just fish. So, we’ll need fishing rods and bait.”
“Fishing is definitely the last resort, but… if it’s Fel and Lilia, couldn’t you just dive into the sea and catch fish directly?”
Elise asked, narrowing her eyes and loosening her mouth slightly. That’s the look of someone testing us. Elise probably doesn’t believe we can actually do that. Too bad for her.
“Yeah, it would be faster for us to just dive into the sea and catch fish. If we use magic, we can catch as much as we want.”
“Wait, you mean there’s magic that lets you breathe underwater?”
“Of course there is. But it makes you all wet and sticky from the seawater. If not for that, we could enjoy underwater walks too.”
Looking at Lilia’s disappointed expression, Elise seemed to believe it was true. She opened and closed her mouth like a fish out of water.
“Well then, it seems like we don’t need much food. Just in case we get bored on the ship, let’s also bring fishing rods and bait, like Jill said. Maybe what we really need is stuff to kill time on the ship.”
“By the way, how many days will it take to get to the neighboring continent?”
“If everything goes smoothly, we should arrive in about fifteen days. The rest depends on the wind and weather.”
“Depends on the weather, huh…”
If we run into a storm, that’ll be trouble. Unlike small boats, I don’t think it would sink that easily. But if it looks like we’re heading into a storm, I’ll use weather-control magic to deal with it. If I do it secretly, they won’t notice. If they do, it might turn into a big problem, so that’ll be a last resort.
“Well then, let’s all go shopping. Finding stuff to kill time with might be tough. We’ll bring a card game for sure. But I’m not sure about the rest.”
“Yeah. I wonder how long we’ll be able to enjoy fishing. Maybe this’ll turn out to be harder than we thought!?”
Jill noticed something and his face turned pale. Actually, yeah—while on the ship, we probably won’t be able to move around much. Unless monsters attack us, of course. Speaking of which, there’s always a chance monsters might appear.
“What do we do if we get attacked by monsters? I don’t think they can get on the ship easily, but we can’t just ignore them either, right?”
“True. But there’s a limit to attacking from the deck. So let’s bring some long-range weapons just in case.”
Still, it’s better than just sitting there doing nothing. I’ve never seen Ardan or Jill use bows and arrows, but can they? Maybe they’re thinking this is a good chance to practice?
After we finished discussing, we headed straight out to the royal capital. As expected from the royal capital, there were endless shops for anything we needed. You could find anything.
In the middle of that, I introduced the workshop of Rugald-san, the dwarf weapon-smith I’m a regular with in the royal capital.
“Hello Rugald-san. Long time no see.”
“Oh, if it isn’t Fel. Don’t tell me there was a problem with the tableware I made last time?”
“No, not at all. Thank you very much for the wonderful items back then.”
After exchanging greetings, I introduced everyone. I told them that Rugald-san was the one who made Lilia’s small but well-crafted tableware. And when I did, all three of them were surprised.
“So it was Rugald-san who made Lilia’s tableware. To be able to create such detailed and wonderful craftsmanship, that’s quite some skill.”
“This seems like a good place to order a sword. I’ll have to get a new sword made next time.”
“Hmm, leave weapons to me. So then, what brings you here today?”
I told Rugald-san that we were going to board a huge ship. In relation to that, we wanted bows and arrows to prepare for battle on the ship. After hearing that, Rugald-san thought for a while. He then brought out several bows from inside the store.
“These are the bows in my shop with the longest range. You guys should be able to draw them. Try them out in the back.”
Saying that, Rugald-san guided us to the backyard of the shop. There, perhaps for testing finished weapons, barrels and logs were scattered around. From among them, he took out a straw target and set it up.
“Have you ever used a bow and arrow before?”
“Before I became an adventurer, I used a bow and arrow for hunting. Since becoming an adventurer, I haven’t used one. So let’s see how it goes.”
Ardan slowly pulled the bow, as if confirming the feel, and released the arrow. It hit the target, but was far from the center. Still, for us who had never used bows and arrows, it was amazing.
“Wow, Ardan. You hit the target.”
“Hey, you can use a bow after all!”
We clapped our hands. But he didn’t seem satisfied. He gave a slightly bitter smile. Even so, after a few tries, he started hitting near the center.
“Monsters that attack huge ships should be big. So this should be good enough. Alright, Jill, you’re next. Well, I doubt you’ll need any practice though.”
Saying that, he handed the bow over. Jill said, “Who knows,” while checking the feel of the bow. And Jill—just as expected from a muscle-brained battle maniac—was hitting the center of the target right from the start.
“Just like Ardan said, it looks like Jill doesn’t need any practice.”
“Right? You almost never see Jill miss a shot. If that happens, it’ll rain arrows.”
“That might be a joke, but it sounds too real and scary…”
Lilia looked at Jill like she was seeing a monster. With such bow skills, it would be nice if he used it in regular battles too. That’s what I thought, but to Jill, it seems using a bow and arrow in battle is a no-go. He probably just likes slashing with a sword.
“With this, I might actually be helpful.”
“If you can hit weak points like the eyes, I think you’ll be a huge help.”
As expected, both of them are not ordinary. Of course, Elise too. After checking the feel and performance of the bows, we bought the set of bows and arrows that Rugald-san recommended and left the shop. All three seemed to like Rugald-san’s shop. That shows just how good the products were.
After that, we bought food, items to kill time, and a full set of fishing gear to prepare. Then, we asked the innkeeper—who was from the East Nation—about recommended sightseeing spots.
With preparations complete, we spent our time until departure day hunting monsters and walking around the royal capital.
—
On the day of departure.
We came to the port of Port Town Beaumont. Around us, people waiting to board were carrying big luggage and making a commotion, as if asking when they could finally get on. Seeing the Eleonora up close, it really was huge.
“So it’s finally time to depart. Somehow, I’m getting nervous.”
“Yeah. Lilia, make sure to hold on tight so you don’t get separated.”
“It’s okay. I’m right here.”
Saying that, Lilia slipped into my chest. It tickled a little. Pii-chan will be on standby until we board and things settle down. Apparently, familiars wait in some kind of mysterious space. It seems it’s hard to explain what kind of place it is.
“In case we get separated, make sure to remember the cabin number properly.”
“Of course. Since we’re in a four-person room, it looks like we’re being treated better than other adventurers.”
“Yeah. It’s good we didn’t have to sleep in a big hall like a bunch of people lying around.”
“Just like the magic-powered ship, there seems to be a bath, too. But only nobles can use the private bathrooms, it seems.”
That was the only disappointing part of this sea journey. Maybe if more time passes and the number of nobles boarding decreases, the private bathrooms might be opened up.
“It’s not a problem even if we can’t take a bath. We have Clean-Up, after all.”
“That’s true. Lilia, couldn’t you start a business with that?”
Jill raised one eyebrow and asked with a mischievous tone.
“That’s true. If I advertise that I also clean laundry, we might get swamped with requests.”
“…Wouldn’t it be too much?”
“Sounds likely.”
Elise and I both raised our hands. After all, this ship is going to have a thousand people aboard. Just handling the laundry sounds like a lot. We’d probably end up using Clean-Up magic all day long. Yeah, Jill’s idea is rejected.
