Episode 78: Because You Said That
Seven days had passed since the ship departed. During that time, the ship had moved on without any incidents. No storms, no waves. Pleasant weather had continued.
When it becomes like that, the problem becomes the battle against boredom.
“So boring.” “Boring.”
Lilia and Jill said that in unison. It seemed the two of them matched strangely well in this area. But their opinion was understandable. If you keep playing card games for too long, you get tired of them. Even touring the inside of the ship was just filled with magic tools larger than those on a regular magic-powered ship, and there wasn’t anything particularly new.
“Well, well, everyone, isn’t peace a good thing? We should enjoy this peaceful time more.”
“You say that, Pii-chan. But we adventurers, just like the name says, only have meaning when we’re adventuring. If we’re just spacing out doing nothing, that meaning disappears. Aah, I wanna move my body with all my strength. I’ve definitely gotten rusty, this.”
Jill seemed like he was simply getting restless because of his excess energy. We thought we could maybe exercise on the deck. But that wasn’t possible. There were lots of people like us who were bored. There were also people from the general passenger section who wanted to escape from the shared sleeping rooms. The atmosphere didn’t allow for that kind of thing at all.
Also, if the battle-crazy Jill moved his body with full strength, what would happen? There’s no need to think about it. He’d definitely bump into someone and seriously injure them. Even if Elise could heal them, there are things you should and shouldn’t do.
“All right, let’s go fishing. There’s nothing else left.”
“Fishing, huh? It’s fine if we can catch something, but it’s not that easy to catch anything.”
When Ardan said “let’s go fishing,” Jill made a displeased face. And that was no surprise. We had gone fishing a few times before, but we had never caught anything. It was as if the giant ship sailing over the sea had scared off all the fish.
“Jill, it’s better if you get some sunlight. Come on, let’s go.”
Elise pulled Jill’s hand. Elise also seemed to be bored. I made Pii-chan disappear from view. And with Lilia stuck to my head, I headed up to the deck.
The space where you could fish was limited. If it was taken over by other people, we’d just have to go back to our room and sleep.
“Oh, looks like someone’s caught something today.”
“It’s true! Let’s go take a look!”
There was someone who had fish in a bucket. Actually, the fish were sticking out of the bucket. It was a fish size we hadn’t seen even in the royal capital.
“Excuse me, is it okay if we take a look at the fish?”
“Oh, sure. I finally managed to reel one in.”
“I wonder what kind of fish this is?”
We gathered around and checked out the fish. I wonder if it’s edible? We couldn’t cook it here, though.
“All right, let’s fish too. We’re going to reel in a big one.”
“If it’s too big, it’ll be a problem. And at least make sure it’s an edible one.”
The old man told us what kind of setup he used to catch it. Apparently, he had dropped the line really deep.
We followed that and prepared our gear. Once we were ready, we threw it into the sea.
“This time for sure, we’ll reel in a fish.”
“If you use Analyze, you’ll know where the fish are, you know?”
“But wouldn’t that feel like cheating? I want to do this fair and square through fishing.”
Jill said that enthusiastically as he cast his line. It looked like more than wanting to fish, he just wanted to compete with someone. He seemed to like rivalry.
“Jill is strangely honest in weird ways. If it were me, I’d totally use everything I could~.”
“Guess that means fishing isn’t just about reeling them in. But I do enjoy actually catching them. So I’ll use it without hesitation.”
“Ah, that’s cheating, Fel!”
And just like that, the fishing tournament started. However, maybe because the ship had moved, there didn’t seem to be any fish in this area. Even so, I silently tossed my line into the sea. If I said there were no fish here, we’d have to go back to the room. Rather than shutting myself inside, I preferred being on the deck and feeling the wind like this.
After fishing for a while, Analyze reacted. It seemed to be in the deep parts of the sea, just like the old man said earlier. Could it be that this time, I might actually catch something?
At that moment, there was a reaction on Jill’s rod. The rod bent greatly. The big fish we saw earlier came to mind.
“Jill, the fish might be too big and break your rod!”
“Ugh, I shouldn’t have been stingy and gone with a cheap rod.”
“Hey, even though you have a lot of money, why are you being stingy?”
Lilia stared at Jill with a cold, steady gaze. But not noticing that at all, Jill was struggling with the fish. The fish was being pulled up from the bottom of the sea. Because of that scene, attention from the people naturally gathered.
And finally, Jill’s rod busted with a *snap*.
“Ah—, just a bit more and you had it.”
“My… my rod…”
People around began to stir, asking “What’s going on?” At that moment, there was a big reaction on Analyze. From the deep part of the sea, something big was heading toward the fish Jill had just failed to catch.
And that big something seemed to have eaten the fish.
“Something big is coming toward us. It looks like it was aiming for the fish Jill was catching. But at this rate, it might just float all the way up to the surface.”
“This reaction—I recognize it. It’s a Kraken. The Sea Devil!”
At Lilia’s shout, the surroundings turned into an uproar. Some people even ran off to inform others. This wasn’t just the deck—inside the ship would become busy too.
“Jill, I know you want to catch a big fish, but reeling in a Sea Devil is not okay.”
“Wait a minute, how is this my fault!?”
“It’s Jill’s fault.”
“It’s Jill’s fault.”
Everyone’s eyes gathered on Jill. Hearing that, Jill scratched his cheek while averting his gaze. Maybe he was thinking, “Well, everyone has a point.”
“Well, isn’t it fine? Now we can say goodbye to boredom, right?”
Ah, Jill has given up and accepted it. And he even looks kind of happy. If I remember right, Jill once said he wanted to fight a Kraken. At that time, it was on the sea so he couldn’t fight. But this time it would be a battle on the ship. He might be thinking that now he can fight all he wants.
Seeing Jill like that, Elise let out a big sigh. She seemed to be going through a lot of trouble. Meanwhile, Jill and Ardan pulled out bows and arrows from their magic bags. Since they could go into battle right away, the corners of both their mouths lifted. They’re both the same kind of person.
With a *Boom!* sound like something crashing, the Eleonora slightly shook. It seemed the Kraken rammed into the ship. Even so, it was just this slight shake. It didn’t seem like the ship would sink. But if it got tangled up, the ship might end up stuck.
“Looks like the ship won’t sink. As long as we can defeat the Kraken, there’s no problem.”
“We’ve already defeated one before, so there shouldn’t be any problem.”
While I was talking with Lilia, the Kraken showed itself at the surface of the sea. It immediately tried to wrap its legs around the ship’s body. But since the ship was big, it could only grab a small part.
Then, the arrows shot by Jill and Ardan pierced into it. Because the Kraken was so huge, it didn’t seem to do much damage. But we were able to get its attention. The Kraken’s eyes glared straight at us.
“If it hits the deck with those tentacles, will it punch a hole through it?”
“Maybe. Since we probably can’t beat it, let’s try to cut off the tentacles.”
“Let’s do that.”
Jill had already thrown away his bow. He ran toward the Kraken’s tentacle. Ardan lightly deflected the tentacle the Kraken slammed down using his shield. He caught it well. So the deck didn’t get a hole. As expected from Ardan, who has a good reputation for his shield handling.
Jill slashed at the tentacle that came down near the deck and easily cut it off. The Kraken let out a strange cry, “Gyawaa!”
“As expected of Jill. I can’t believe he could slice such a thick tentacle in one stroke.”
“Fuhahaha, lately I’ve been overshadowed by Fel’s crazy magic, but I’m actually amazing, you know?”
“I already know that, Jill.”
Even though it was during battle, the two of them laughed together. Just a moment ago, it looked like the deck was about to turn into chaos. But seeing how calm we were, the situation began to settle down. Maybe we avoided secondary damage from the commotion?
The Kraken, having one tentacle cut off, seemed to go into a rage. This time it swung two tentacles at once. If those hit the deck, it’d be bad for sure.
“Lilia, it’s our turn. Wind Cutter!”
“Leave it to me—Wind Cutter!”
The two tentacles were cut by the two blades of wind. They fell onto the sea. A loud *splash* sound was heard. Even with several tentacles gone, the Kraken showed no concern and continued to cling to the ship. It was like a child trying not to have its toy taken away.
“Do you think those tentacles are edible?”
“There’s a thick one lying around. If it’s just for tasting, that one should be enough.”
While saying that, Ardan fired an arrow. The arrow hit the Kraken’s eye perfectly. With one eye crushed, the Kraken let out a scream, released the tentacles that were holding the ship, and dove into the sea. It seemed the damage to the eye had an effect after all.
They quickly ran to the edge, but the Kraken had already sunk into the deep sea.
“As expected, defeating it was impossible.”
“Our main goal was to protect the ship. So we should be happy that we accomplished that.”
“Fel is right. In a way, it was Jill who drew it in. We should be glad there was no damage. If something had happened, just saying sorry wouldn’t have been enough.”
It seemed Ardan had aimed at the eye right away in order to make the Kraken retreat quickly. If the ship had been damaged………. I don’t even want to think about it.
