The Ultimate Sage Who Faked Incompetence and Was Disinherited Just Wants to Enjoy His New Life! - Episode 79: Landing
Episode 79: Landing
Apparently, they were going to check whether the large tentacle left on the deck was edible. People who looked like cooks cut off a part of it and carried it away. If it turned out to be edible, it would probably be served for dinner today.
Of course, Ardan also cut off a part and carefully put it into his magic bag.
After driving away the Kraken, we became respected.
And fishing on the deck was completely prohibited.
If there’s a chance it might attract a Kraken, of course it’s going to be banned.
“Looks like it wasn’t allowed after all.”
“Well, let’s just say it was good we found out early what’s not allowed on the ship.”
“That’s one way to put it~”
We weren’t the only ones fishing. A good number of people, even nobles, were doing it to kill time. It seemed they couldn’t punish only us. Still, one of the few precious pastimes was lost.
“There’s nothing we can do on deck anymore. What should we do?”
“We’ll just have to stay quietly in our rooms.”
“So that’s how it is, huh…”
Encouraging Jill, who hunched his back, we returned to our room.
That evening, meals unlike anything we’d had so far were served. They all had a unique springy texture and were very delicious. The Kraken’s tentacle seemed to be quite a good ingredient. Now I’m looking forward to the dishes Ardan will make. I hope we reach land soon.
After the encounter with the Kraken, days passed without any trouble. The view from the deck didn’t change much. But since our route was also used by merchant ships, we occasionally passed by them.
To avoid the large waves created by our massive ship, the merchant ships usually sailed at a distance. And without binoculars, it was impossible to see the details of those ships.
I really should’ve bought binoculars. I always rely on Analyze, so I only check things with my eyes when they’re already close. If I keep relying on that method, I might get caught off guard. Even at a distance, I should train myself to observe visually.
When I brought this up with Lilia, she taught me a new spell. It was a life magic spell. But she hadn’t taught it before because it wasn’t very practical.
“It’s called Eagle Eye. When you use it, your field of vision narrows. You’ll be able to see far, but…”
“Narrowing the field of vision isn’t good. If I use it, it’ll have to be for a short time. Can’t use it if there’s danger nearby.”
“Right? That’s why I never taught it before. But for looking over the sea or the sky, it might actually be useful.”
Since it’s life magic, Elise could use it too. So, I learned the spell along with her. I was able to use it just by listening to Lilia’s explanation. But Elise took about half a day to be able to use it.
“As expected of a Sage. I’m shocked.”
“Haha, well, at first Lilia just randomly called me a ‘Self-Proclaimed Sage’.”
“And now?”
“I was officially appointed by His Majesty the King.”
All adventurer professions are self-proclaimed. So even if the King says it, it still falls under the category of self-proclaimed. But if someone’s title is way too far off from their actual ability, it seems the Adventurers’ Guild will issue a warning. Like calling yourself a “wizard” when you can’t even use magic.
That’s why recently, guild masters have started conducting tests.
“If His Majesty directly called you that, then you’re a Sage both in name and reality.”
“I would’ve been fine with ‘wizard’ though.”
“Come on now, it’s fine. ‘Sage’ sounds cooler anyway.”
If Lilia says so, then fine. I’m a Sage.
While I was petting Lilia like that, Pii-chan came over, as if saying “me too.” So, I gave Pii-chan some pats too.
Even though it looks exactly like a Firebird, Pii-chan’s body is not hot at all—just a fake-looking Firebird. According to it, “I’m using mysterious power to not be hot.” If I could figure out how it does that, maybe I could use magic that doesn’t hurt allies.
I need to do some questioning later.
After learning the Eagle Eye spell, we went up to the deck right away to try it out. The faraway horizon zoomed in close. But just as Lilia had warned, the surrounding scenery disappeared all at once.
“This is just like what Lilia said. If you don’t think carefully when using it, it feels like you’ll get sliced from behind.”
“It’s true. When using this spell, someone else needs to keep watch of the surroundings.”
“It’s a spell suited for parties. Alone, its usage seems pretty limited.”
Being able to check from a distance without going there is an advantage. But that’s only if there are no obstacles in front. It seems like a spell that’s hard to use on land.
—
Fifteenth day since we departed from the Port Town Beaumont. If the route was going smoothly, we should be seeing the neighboring continent around now.
To see the continent that should soon appear over the horizon, many people were up on the deck since morning. Of course, we were among them. Especially toward the front of the ship, people seemed to be gathering.
Judging that we couldn’t get through because of how crowded it was, we climbed up on top of the cabin in the center of the ship. It was like a small observation deck. From there, we could see the front of the ship well.
“Look! I can see a small island!”
“It’s true. That must be the neighboring continent.”
“Hey, I don’t see anything.”
Jill voiced his dissatisfaction. But it couldn’t be helped. It would’ve been nice if Eagle Eye could be made usable by others too. But of course, that seems impossible. At this distance, we’d probably arrive around early afternoon.
When I said that, we decided to eat lunch before the cafeteria got too crowded.
“So, what should we do first once we arrive?”
“It seems like the distance from the port to the royal capital is pretty far.”
We occupied a corner of the sparsely populated cafeteria and spread out the map of the neighboring continent we got in the Port Town of Beaumont.
From Port Town Beaumont to the royal capital was a short distance, but that doesn’t seem to be the case on the neighboring continent. Of course, it’s not like the royal capital is further upstream along a river either. It looks like we’ll have to travel quite a distance over land.
“It would’ve been great if we had an airship.”
“No way that’d be possible. But judging by the way things were, it seems like they’ll build a new airship soon.”
“Yeah. Those researchers were really passionate. No matter what kind of accident happens, they don’t seem like they’d give up.”
Remembering that scene, Elise shook her head from side to side with eyes like she was looking at something pitiful. I do remember it being intense. “Once it’s complete, we’ll sell it to you guys,” they said. And they looked serious at that time.
Well, true, a completed airship would probably be extremely expensive. Only Platinum Rank adventurers could afford to buy one just like that. It means those people found themselves a valuable customer.
They’ll probably use the profits to build a new airship, sell it, and repeat the process to keep building airships.
“If we’re not in a rush, I’d like to go see the Water Spirit.”
“Sounds good. I’m curious too.”
“I’m interested as well.”
Pii-chan, hidden under my sleeve, whispered in a small voice. Not a single person on this ship has noticed Pii-chan’s existence. We plan to keep it that way.
“All right then, today let’s look for a place to stay in the port town. And from tomorrow, we’ll head along the seaside towns.”
“Thanks, Ardan.”
“What are you saying? We’re comrades, right? No need to worry about it.”
“Yeah. No need to worry. Seaside towns seem like they’ll have sightseeing spots too.”
Jill and Elise also agreed with us. I felt like I dragged them into this. But if I said that, they’d probably respond with “Don’t underestimate us.” I really think we’ve been blessed with good companions.
After finishing lunch and taking a short rest, we went back up to the deck, and the continent had come close. Even without using magic, we could clearly see the town.
We could see rows of houses with strange roofs, different from our continent. But they were similar to the one at the Nagomi Inn.
After a little while, the Eleonora docked at the neighboring continent. A gangway was set up, and preparations for disembarking were complete. The captain used a magic device that makes his voice louder to guide people. Apparently, general passengers were to disembark first. Naturally, we were among them.
It took a little time, but we landed on the neighboring continent. Their clothes were clearly different from ours. There were no buttons, and they were just tied at the waist with something like a string.
Now that I think about it, the owner of Nagomi was dressed the same. I think it was called an *obi*, right?
As we looked at them curiously, they also looked at us curiously.
