Episode 8: Dinner TogetherÂ
After receiving my reward, I climbed the stairs of the Adventurers’ Guild and headed to the room I had rented. Since it was already getting late, I decided to postpone searching for an inn until tomorrow.Â
I had been walking almost all day, and my legs were exhausted. They were trembling slightly. As I sat on the bed and massaged them, Lilia gave me some criticism.Â
“Fel, you really need to build more stamina.”Â
“I think so too. I should start running every day to improve my endurance.”Â
“That’s the right attitude. You can’t just rely on magic all the time, or you’ll become a helpless Fel.”Â
The truth was, I hadn’t been in an environment where I could train my stamina before. But, that was just an excuse. I needed to put in the effort starting tomorrow.Â
I spent some time just lying around on the bed, recovering my strength.Â
“Alright, let’s go get dinner. Today, let’s head in a different direction from yesterday.”Â
“Good idea. Let’s also check out some other shops while we’re at it. We have a little money now, after all.”Â
I placed Lilia on my shoulder and stepped out of the room. I could already hear the noise from inside. But once we were in the hallway, the volume increased even more.Â
When we reached the first floor, the guild was packed with returning adventurers. Staying at the Adventurers’ Guild was free. But that also meant dealing with this constant noise. I still wanted to find a quieter place to stay.Â
Leaving the guild, we walked in the opposite direction from yesterday. Lanterns hanging from shop eaves illuminated the streets. They glowed warmly against the evening sky.Â
Oh, that’s right—I needed to buy a lantern.Â
I scanned the shops along the main road. I was looking for one that sold lanterns. It didn’t take long to find a suitable place.Â
“There are so many types. There’s the oil-fueled kind and the magic tool kind that uses magic stones. The magic tool version is more expensive, though.”Â
“Fel, are you really going to buy a lantern? I already taught you the spell for lighting.”Â
“That’s true, but I feel like I’m standing out too much when I use it.”Â
Lilia suddenly seemed to realize something and looked around. Indeed, all the light sources people were using were lanterns.Â
“You’re right… I didn’t notice. Since when did people stop using Small Light…?”Â
She was stunned. She probably never imagined that things would change so much while she was sealed away. Lilia had taught me all sorts of practical magic, thinking it would be useful.Â
But some of those spells had either fallen out of use or disappeared entirely.Â
“Maybe we should be more careful about observing the world around us.”Â
“Yeah…”Â
I patted Lilia’s head to comfort her. And she clung to my neck. It seemed like this realization had hit her hard.Â
She had wanted to teach me everything I didn’t know about the world. But it turned out she wasn’t as knowledgeable as she thought. No wonder she was feeling down.Â
“Hey, Lilia, which lantern do you think is better?”Â
“Well, the fuel type is cheaper. But it means carrying extra supplies. The magic tool type is more compact, even if you carry extra magic stones, and it’s safer. But it’s also a lot more expensive.”Â
“Yeah, it’s pricey.”Â
The oil-fueled lantern cost two silver coins, while the magic tool lantern was five times that price—one small gold coin.Â
After some hesitation, I decided on the fuel-based lantern. If I had more money later, I could upgrade to the magic tool version. I also bought insect-repelling fuel. Which would help keep bugs away.Â
I immediately filled the lantern with fuel and lit it. A warm glow illuminated my hands.Â
“The light from Small Light is nice, but this has a comforting warmth to it.”Â
“You’re right, Fel. It feels kind of soothing.”Â
Smiling, we continued searching for a place to eat. The restaurants along the main street all had long lines. So we gave up and turned into a side alley.Â
The number of people decreased. But there were still a good number of passersby, including families.Â
“I feel like there might be a good place to eat around here…”Â
“This is when you use magic to find one. There! That place has a lot of customers. It must be a good restaurant.”Â
“Alright, let’s go there tonight.”Â
Following Lilia’s guidance, we headed to the restaurant. Magic was really handy at times like this.Â
The place looked like a casual eatery. And from outside, we could see that it was bustling with customers. That was a promising sign.Â
As soon as we stepped inside, an employee greeted us.
“Welcome! Are you alone…?”Â
“Uh, no, there are two of us.”Â
“Oh, um, a Fairy… Let me check on that!”Â
The flustered waitress hurried to the back. Lilia was small, but she was definitely another person. Soon, she returned with someone who seemed to be the restaurant owner.Â
“I’ve been running this place for a long time. But this is the first time a Fairy has come in. Let’s see… It’s pretty crowded today, so would you mind sharing a single-person table?”Â
The old man grinned. Seeing that, we smiled back.Â
“Of course.”Â
“That’s fine with me.”Â
“Oh! A real Fairy! I never thought I’d see one in my lifetime!”Â
The old man was thrilled. The staff and even the customers seemed excited too. Fairy power was amazing—it almost made me jealous.Â
A waitress led us to our seats. She recommended the daily set meal, so I went with that. Lilia commented, “You really have no initiative.” But I hoped she’d cut me some slack until I got used to this life.Â
Lilia started charming a child sitting at the next table. Watching that heartwarming scene, I soon saw our meal arrive.Â
“Wow, this is amazing! It’s a hamburger steak!”Â
“It’s way fancier than yesterday’s skewers. Alright, let’s eat!”Â
Just like Lilia said, today’s meal was much more substantial than last night’s. And it looked delicious.Â
I started with the hamburger steak. I cut a piece with my knife and fork and took a bite. Juicy happiness burst from inside.Â
“This is delicious! Here, Lilia, have some.”Â
I placed a small piece of hamburger steak on a spoon. Since she was so tiny, it was hard to get it onto a fork.Â
Lilia hesitated for a moment before opening her mouth wide and biting down. Apparently, the piece was too big for her. Adjusting portion sizes for her was tricky.Â
“Mmm, it’s delicious. The juices burst out, and it really feels like eating meat.”Â
“Glad to hear that. What do you want to eat next?”Â
“Hmm, maybe some vegetables.”Â
“Got it.”Â
I cut some vegetables for her. It would be nice if Lilia had her own utensils. Oh, right—I should check a general store while searching for an inn tomorrow. Maybe I could find something just the right size for her.Â
After fully enjoying our dinner, we returned to our room. I could feel people staring at us the entire time. But Fairies seemed rare, so I decided to just accept it. If we stayed in this city for a while, I’d probably get used to the attention.Â
As soon as we got back, I flopped onto the bed.Â
“I’m really tired today. It’s a bit early, but I think I’ll just go to sleep. Oh, but first—Clean Up, Clean Up!”Â
“Clean Up is fine and all, but I’d like to take a real bath sometimes.”Â
“Hmm… If it’s just you, that should be doable. I could just borrow a tub.”Â
“I want to bathe with you, Fel.”Â
“W-well, that might be difficult for a while…”Â
My heart skipped a beat.Â
We had bathed together before, of course. And every time, Lilia’s bare body was so beautiful that… certain parts of me reacted. I had to make sure she never noticed.Â
I tried my best not to look. But I couldn’t shake the guilty feeling.Â
It felt like I was seeing something forbidden. Lilia herself didn’t seem to mind, which somehow made the whole situation even more confusing.
