Episode 81: The Ghost Town Mizuna
According to what the shopkeeper told us, it seems that Ghosts have only recently started appearing in Mizuna.
We don’t know yet if this has anything to do with the Water Spirit. But we decided to investigate just in case.
Whether Spirits can control Ghosts is a mystery.
But Spirits are kind of like Ghosts themselves…
When I said something like that to Pii-chan, I got scolded with a “Don’t lump us together with Ghosts.”
Apparently, they’re completely different things.
“Undead extermination, huh. Guess it’s time to use the silver sword for the first time in a while.”
“Now that you mention it, it’s my first time seeing Jill’s silver sword.”
“Yeah…”
Huh?
He doesn’t seem too excited.
Does he not like it?
When I looked at Ardan, he gave me a wry smile and explained:
“The thing about silver swords is, they don’t cut well. And they’re not even that effective against undead. They seem to do *some* damage, but not enough to rely on. That’s why he doesn’t normally use it. Jill prefers a sword with durability that lets him make use of his speed and power.”
“I see.”
“Silver swords bend easily. You have to use them carefully, and that just feels… weird.”
Yeah, that probably doesn’t suit Jill.
If you want something that meets those conditions, you’d be looking at a mithril sword, or maybe an orichalcum sword.
But orichalcum swords are legendary items.
I doubt you’d find them for sale.
They’re probably something that would be sleeping in the royal family’s treasure vault.
“Well then, let’s change the plan to a weapon shop hunt. We need to find Jill a new sword.”
“I want a mithril sword!”
“I’ve never seen one for sale, though.”
“Maybe they have one in this country?”
And so, we went around visiting all the weapon shops in Suiren.
The result:
None of the stores had one.
—
Dragging the disappointed Jill back, we returned to the inn.
By the time we got there, dinner time had already passed. But we somehow managed to get a meal from the inn.
That was close.
It was a mistake to get so worked up looking for weapon shops.
Since we were in a foreign country, we picked nothing but dishes we had never seen before from the menu.
“Jill, I’m sure there’s a place selling it somewhere.”
“She’s right. No point in feeling down about it.”
“That may be, but… The shape of the swords here is completely different from the ones I use. They only have a blade on one side. And they’re weirdly curved.”
That’s true.
Like Jill said, the swords we were shown only had a blade on one side and were curved.
According to the shopkeeper, they’re called “katana”.
From the way he talked, Jill doesn’t seem to have used one before.
“Then even if there *was* a mithril sword, you couldn’t use it.”
“Yeah, that’s how it is.”
Ardan and I started thinking together.
In front of us, Jill was silently eating food from the small dishes.
It looked like he was stress-eating.
Lilia and Elise were watching him with their mouths slightly open.
“I guess we’ll just have to get our hands on some mithril and bring it to a workshop somewhere to have a sword made.”
“If we can even get mithril…”
“Yeah. We’ll have to ask around about that too.”
I wonder if mithril can be mined in this country?
When we asked the weapon shop owners about mithril swords, they all just said, “We don’t have them here.”
No one said, “Such a thing doesn’t exist.”
Which means mithril *does* exist in this country.
Feeling a bit uneasy, we called it a night.
“So this is a futon. You lay it out on the tatami, huh.”
“This is the kind of thing where if you line them up side by side, you could make a futon as big as you want.”
“At least you don’t have to worry about falling off a bed with this.”
There was a magic tool lamp by the pillows.
Its outside was made of paper.
Seems like the people in this country really love paper.
After taking a bath, we were all tired from walking around town and quickly fell asleep.
—
The next morning.
After eating breakfast, we left the inn right away.
Passing through the town’s gate, we followed the coastal road we had been told about.
“When does the Eleonora depart?”
“Around one month from now, apparently.”
“That’s sooner than I thought. If we’re not careful, we’ll be left behind on this continent.”
“If that happens, we’ll just have to ride on a merchant ship. If Platinum Rank adventurers who can defeat a Kraken want a ride, they’ll be in high demand.”
Just like Ardan said.
Even if we miss the ship, we’ll manage somehow.
Merchant ships leave fairly frequently.
And if taking us onboard means their safety is guaranteed, they might even let us ride for free.
Thinking about that, we continued down the road.
Alongside the road, the blue sea stretched far into the distance.
According to the information we got, even on foot we should arrive before evening.
So we moved at a leisurely pace.
After all, we’re on vacation right now.
There’s no need to rush.
“Do you think the Ghost is the Ghost-type? Or the Zombie-type?”
“I’d prefer Zombies. At least we can still slash those.”
Personally, I don’t mind either.
For some reason, magic still works on Ghosts, even though they’re formless.
That’s why it makes sense that adventurer parties always want mages.
In our party, Eliza can use magic that’s effective against undead.
It’s a type of healing magic.
Of course, Lilia and I can use it too. But if we do, people will find out we can use healing magic—so we try not to use it unless we really have to.
“I don’t mind getting my hopes up, but remember—it’s still just a rumor. We’ll have to ask around in town to find out if the Ghosts really appear.”
“We’ll get there by evening, so the interviews will have to wait until tomorrow. Hope the inn has a room open.”
“I’m sure they will. I mean, it’s a haunted town, right? Normal people wouldn’t want to go near it.”
“But adventurers like us just get drawn in, huh~”
True.
Stories like this are exactly the kind that catch our interest.
Adventurers really are strange creatures.
Lilia looked at Jill with half-lidded eyes, like she wanted to say, “That’s true, huh.”
As the sun started to set a little, we saw the town come into view.
This must be the fishing town of Mizuna.
From the distance, nothing seemed off.
There were ships out at sea, and several were already returning to port.
Looks like they come back fairly early.
As soon as we arrived in town, we searched for an inn.
Luckily, it seemed like we were the only visitors here.
We found a place right away.
The inn was built in the same style as the ones in Port Town Suiren.
If this keeps up, we can expect good inns wherever we go next too.
While staying at the inn, we talked to the innkeeper and staff.
“You’re asking about the Ghost? Well, they say Ghosts appear on the beach at night. No one knows where they come from. But if there are people or ships nearby, they’ll attack. That’s why everyone comes back from the sea before sunset.”
I see.
So *that’s* why the ships were returning early.
Normally, they might have stayed out until it got darker to catch more fish.
I also asked if there were any other strange things happening at sea.
But since everyone’s been avoiding the coastline lately, they didn’t really know.
Tomorrow, we’ll head to the port and talk to the fishermen and people living near the coast.
If Ghosts suddenly started showing up, there must be a reason.
If we figure out the cause, maybe we can learn if there’s a connection to the Water Spirit.
Honestly, I hope it has nothing to do with it.
Night came, but nothing happened at the inn.
Looks like the Ghosts really only appear near the coast.
If I’d known that, I would’ve picked a place closer to the beach.
We should’ve asked around before looking for a place to stay.
—
The next day.
We went to the area near the beach where the Ghosts were said to appear.
There weren’t any ships at the port—they had already departed.
That means we probably won’t get much info from the fishermen.
For now, we started asking around the area.
It didn’t take too long.
“Alright, let’s organize what we’ve learned. The Ghosts are the Ghost-type. They appear after sunset and disappear when the sun rises.”
“Seems like they attack when you get close. But they’re weak, so no one’s died yet.”
“What’s their goal? Just messing around?”
“Maybe they’re trying to warn us about something dangerous.”
“Are there really Ghosts like that~?”
In the end, we won’t know for sure until night falls.
So we decided to stay by the port and wait for the ships to return.
