Episode 86: Inland Town, Kikyo
A few hours later, Ardan and the others returned. Jill looked like he had been hit by a storm — completely disappointed. It seems it didn’t go well. When I looked at Ardan, he silently nodded.
“I thought there might be a chance in Mizuna, since it used to be near a mithril mine.”
“Apparently, when the mithril mine closed, most of the craftsmen left for other places. Well, I guess that’s only natural.”
“Then making a mithril sword is impossible.”
Elise let out a breath and spoke in a gentle tone. Looks like making the mithril sword will be postponed for a while. Jill might finally return to his senses.
“It’s not possible here. But they said there’s a large town called Kikyo a bit inland from here. If we go there, there might be a craftsman who can handle mithril.”
“Might be, huh? So it’s not certain?”
“Right. Apparently, all the craftsmen who were around here went to Kikyo. They said maybe one of them settled there and became a blacksmith.”
So even if we go to Kikyo, it might be a waste of time. There might be a lot of blacksmiths, but whether there’s a workshop with the right equipment to process mithril — that’s something we won’t know until we go.
“So, what do we do? Are we going?”
“I want to go.”
Everyone’s attention turned to Jill. He spoke in a voice that was about to wither away. He looked like a pitiful child. We had no choice but to agree.
It’s said that Kikyo is about two days away by carriage. We’ll probably depart first thing tomorrow morning.
Jill suggested going there on foot right now, but Elise rejected it. Jill pleaded with Elise with a face like a puppy abandoned under a bridge. But it didn’t work on her. As if she were used to it, she didn’t give in at all. Strong.

The next day.
We got on the stagecoach that came from Port Town Suiren early in the morning. Just like that, we set out toward Kikyo while camping along the way. Apparently, there aren’t any towns or villages on the way. But in return, there don’t seem to be any bandits either. This country seems safer than I thought.
On the second day after leaving Mizuna, we saw a large town up ahead. So this is Kikyo. There are no moats or castle walls — just houses lined up in a wooden-box shape. It was just like the Port Town of Suiren.
“It’s bigger than the Port Town of Suiren. Probably about twice as big.”
“Yeah. Looks like a pretty lively town. The fields stretch far out. That means a lot of people live here.”
“If it’s here, there’s definitely a skilled blacksmith.”
Jill said confidently. But just because they’re skilled doesn’t mean they’ll have the proper equipment. That’s the worry.
Once we entered the town of Kikyo, we started seeing a few people dressed like us. Seems like the people who were on the same ship as us also came to this town.
It’s bigger than Suiren, and it looks like lots of goods are sold here. So there are probably a lot of people who come for sightseeing or business.
As usual, we started by looking for an inn. Of course, we searched for the same type of inn we always stay at. Luckily, we were able to find a similar one again.
“This kind of inn is everywhere.”
“Yeah. Maybe the same family runs them.”
“Or maybe this style is just common in this country.”
Pii-chan was probably right. There were a lot of similar inns. It’s probably the most popular type. By the way, I haven’t seen any inns that look like the ones from the continent we live on. Maybe they’re unpopular? Well, they don’t have baths, so maybe that’s why.
Apparently, the people in this country really love baths.
“Let’s start searching for a blacksmith tomorrow. The sun’s already setting, after all.”
“Fel’s right. Let’s start tomorrow. That okay with you, Jill?”
“Yeah. I guess it can’t be helped. Then we better go to bed early and wake up first thing in the morning.”
“Wait, Jill. Don’t go first thing in the morning — that’ll bother them.”
Elise scolded Jill. I wonder what’ll happen if we can’t find a blacksmith who can make a mithril sword. I’m starting to get a little worried.
While somehow calming Jill’s excitement, we welcomed the next day.
As soon as we finished breakfast, we started moving. However, we decided that there was no point in everyone going together. So just like last time, Ardan and Jill would search for a blacksmith. And the rest of the group would have free time.
“Well then, let’s go visit some tourist spots in this town.”
“That’s right. But just doing that would be boring. So let’s also ask around to see if there are any interesting stories.”
“It seems there’s no Adventurers’ Guild in this country. Then the problem is how we’re going to gather information.”
I wonder if there’s a store that sells information somewhere? Or maybe we’re supposed to go to a tavern and get people to talk? I don’t really know.
For now, we decided to tour the sightseeing spots while looking around the shops. I’m curious about what’s being sold too.
“Herbal medicine… seems like something with a spiritual benefit.”
“It seems kinda suspicious. Looks like powdered medicine — you wouldn’t be able to drink this in the middle of battle.”
“It says here it works for colds.”
“Adventurers don’t usually catch colds, so maybe it’s a medicine meant for commoners?”
We arrived at a street where mysterious items were being sold. This place is said to be the most popular market in town and is one of the tourist attractions. Apparently, you can get all kinds of things here. Of course, they say there’s also a lot of junk being sold. So it seems a discerning eye is needed.
“I’m not a merchant, so I have no idea what’s good or not.”
“Me neither. Maybe we should leave it to Lilia-chan?”
“Leave it to me! Lilia-chan’s eyes can see right through anything!”
“Really now…….”
I stared at Lilia a bit doubtfully as she spoke confidently. But Lilia paid no attention to that and kept looking through the goods. Occasionally, the shopkeepers would look startled.
Don’t worry—I’ve already told her not to cause trouble.
“Hmm, this one looks pretty good.”
“What’s this? An old book?”
“Seems like it. Maybe it’s some kind of ancient document? But I don’t know what’s written in it.”
We picked up the old book Lilia pointed at. The cover was tattered, and the letters on it were unreadable. Maybe it had been soaked in muddy water — parts of it were discolored brown and wrinkled.
“You’ve got a sharp eye, customer. That’s a book showing the location of treasure. Where that book points, you’ll find gold and silver treasures.”
Sounds like a lie. The shopkeeper probably doesn’t believe what’s written in the book either. And I doubt he can even read it. He’s probably just saying something random to try to sell it to us.
But Lilia’s eyes reacted. Without a doubt, there’s something about this book. I decided to buy it without hesitation.
“I’ll buy it. How much?”
“That’ll be… one silver coin.”
Cheap. He definitely thinks this is a fake. I paid one silver coin and bought the old document.
“You didn’t even hesitate to buy it. As expected of our big bro!”
“Because there’s no way Lilia would be wrong. There’s definitely some secret in this. Let’s carefully investigate it once we’re back at the inn.”
“You’re really loved, huh~ Lilia-chan.”
“H-Hey Elise, that’s not relevant at all, right!?”
Lilia turned bright red and protested, but that’s exactly what I was thinking. Well, I’ll keep quiet. Pii-chan might get scolded by Lilia again otherwise.
We continued walking through the market. There weren’t just trinkets, but also oddly shaped throwing weapons.
“Shuriken… these look kinda cool.”
“They’ve got lots of blades, and just holding them looks dangerous. You okay?”
“…That’s true. Looks like I’d need to practice.”
“This knife has a strange shape. Kunai? That’s what it seems to be called.”
“Maybe I’ll buy a few as souvenirs.”
We’ve got money in excess. We don’t know when we’ll come here again, so I decided to buy whatever I wanted. Elise also seemed to be buying all sorts of cosmetics. Of course, all the luggage was stored in my magic bag. So we weren’t carrying anything by hand.
While we were enjoying our shopping, Ardan and the others came back. Judging from the smile on Jill’s face, he must have been able to place the order for the mithril sword.
