Episode 9: The Silver Crescent Moon InnÂ
I turned off the magical lamp and slipped under the covers. Immediately, Lilia clung to my chest. This was her favorite spot. And right now, she was sprawled out like a starfish.Â
Apparently, she replenished her magic by doing this. She had used quite a bit of magic today. So maybe she needed to recharge more than usual.Â
“Hmm, this method is really inefficient.”Â
“Inefficient? Wait, Lilia, what are you doing!?”Â
Lilia burrowed inside my shirt. This had never happened before. She was wriggling around.Â
“Hey, Lilia, that tickles!”Â
“Oh, come on! You’re a boy, so just stay still!”Â
I didn’t think ticklishness had anything to do with being a boy or a girl. But before I could protest further, I felt something soft press directly against my chest. It was the sensation of bare skin touching mine.Â
“Lilia!?”Â
“Ah! No! Don’t pull me out now! I’m naked!”Â
I immediately pulled my hands back. Naked!? Why was she—Â
“It’s more efficient to transfer magic when skin is touching skin. See? Learning something new?”Â
“Y-Yes.”Â
“Good. Then let’s sleep.”Â
“Y-Yes.”Â
I was exhausted. But could I even sleep like this? I had to empty my mind. Achieve enlightenment. Achieve enlightenment…Â
—Â
The next morning.Â
I woke up to find Lilia stuck to my face. However, she had finished recharging her magic and was properly dressed. I felt both relief and… a little disappointment? It was a complicated feeling.Â
The sun was already up. Apparently, I was more exhausted than I had thought. I sighed, feeling frustrated at my lack of stamina. Starting today, I needed to train harder. My goal: Muscle Fel.Â
“Good morning, Lilia.”Â
“Good morning, Fel…”Â
I patted Lilia’s head as she slowly woke up. She smelled nice. …Wait, what? Had she always smelled like this?Â
My mind started feeling hazy, as if in a fog. I knew she’d scold me, but I couldn’t help sniffing the scent a little more.Â
“Hey! Fel, wake up!”Â
Lilia smacked me awake. Huh? Did I fall back asleep?Â
“Sorry, sorry, I’m up now.”Â
“Honestly, you’re such a sleepyhead. The other adventurers have already gone to work.”Â
“My bad.”Â
I got out of bed and adjusted my clothes—not that I had any fancy sleepwear. I just threw my jacket back on.Â
We went downstairs and headed outside. Grabbing a sandwich filled with meat and vegetables from a street stall, we ate while discussing today’s plan.Â
“First, we need to find an inn. Once we do that, we’ll explore the area and then do a lap around the outer perimeter of Colibri Town.”Â
“We should find a place near the Adventurers’ Guild. That would be the most convenient.”Â
“Good point. Let’s start our search nearby and map out the city at the same time.”Â
I activated Auto-Mapping magic and began our search.Â
As expected, all the inns near the Adventurers’ Guild were packed with adventurers. Looked like we’d have to stay somewhere a bit farther away.Â
“Oh well. In that case, let’s find a cozy inn instead.”Â
“Good idea. If we’re staying somewhere, I’d rather it be comfortable. Actually, this might be better.”Â
We changed our strategy and started looking in quieter residential areas. Taking a few turns down side streets, we found ourselves in a district lined with houses. The houses were built on stone foundations with wooden structures on top. And laundry was hanging from the balconies. Flowers bloomed near the entrances.Â
“Renting a whole house wouldn’t be a bad idea either.”Â
“That’s a bit much for now. But yeah, having our own place sounds nice. Cleaning and laundry would be a hassle, though.”Â
“That’s what magic is for.”Â
“Fair point.”Â
With the household magic Lilia had taught me, chores would be a breeze. Once I had a steady income, maybe we really could rent a house.Â
As we continued down the backstreets, we spotted a stylish wooden sign. It read “Silver Crescent Moon Inn.” Looked like an inn to me.Â
“Lilia, let’s check that place out.”Â
“Yeah, it looks nice.”Â
Just as we arrived at the inn, a plump woman appeared from the back as if she had been expecting us.Â
“Welcome! Looking for a room?”Â
“Yes, we’re adventurers. Do you have space for us?”Â
“Of course! Our rooms are for two people. Is that alright?”Â
“No problem. How much per night?”Â
“Six small silver coins per night. Breakfast and dinner are available for an extra charge if you’d like.”Â
“Understood. We’ll take five nights, please.”
I handed over three silver coins and received the room key. Thanks to selling the magic stone from the Goblin General yesterday, my wallet was still in good shape. Thinking back, yesterday had been a lucky day. If I said that out loud, though, Carrot-san would probably scold me.Â
“The room is on the second floor.”Â
“I’m excited to see what it looks like.”Â
“Hey, wait a minute— is that a Fairy? You’re sure it’ll be okay, right?”Â
“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure she doesn’t cause any trouble.”Â
It seemed that Fairies were widely recognized as mischievous beings by common folk. And, well… that was true. I couldn’t exactly deny it. Lilia did enjoy pranks. But hers were always harmless and cute—nothing anyone would get seriously mad about.Â
The rented room had two windows, making it nice and bright. The bed was decently soft. Aside from a desk, chair, and table, there was even a wardrobe. With this setup, I might actually buy some clothes.Â
“This room is quiet,”Â
Lilia murmured, sitting on the open windowsill. A gentle breeze played with her hair. It shimmered like fresh spring leaves.Â
“The Adventurers’ Guild was right on the main street, and the first floor was a reception area. Compared to that, this is much quieter.”Â
I stood beside Lilia. I gazed absentmindedly at the sky. For the first time in a while, I felt like I could relax. The tense, on-edge lifestyle I’d been leading felt almost unreal now.Â
“We need to go back to the Adventurers’ Guild and clean up the room we were using.”Â
“Oh, right. We should clean it and thank them properly. After that, while we’re out running, we might as well gather some medicinal herbs. No point wasting time just running.”Â
“True, that’d be killing two birds with one stone. Plus, we still need to improve our map of the forest. So it’s a good opportunity.”Â
After greeting the innkeeper, we headed back to the Adventurers’ Guild.Â
When we told Carrot-san and the others that we were moving out, they were surprised. But since we were Silver Rank adventurers—even if relatively new—we had already proven our skills. In the end, they accepted it with an understanding nod.Â
It wouldn’t be right for Silver Ranks to keep occupying rooms meant for rookie adventurers. There were probably others waiting for an open room. Besides, thanks to yesterday’s Goblin distribution survey request, we had earned a decent amount of money. Moving out made sense.Â
After using magic to clean the room, I returned the key at the reception counter. That’s when we ran into Liner and his group. They saw me handing over the key and seemed to get the situation right away.Â
“So, you found an inn, huh? Makes sense. We’re thinking of moving out too, once we start making more money. Though, with the three of us, it’s a bit tricky. If only we had a fourth member…”Â
Liner shot a glance in my direction. Seeing that, I felt a little guilty.Â
“Hope you find someone good.”Â
“You sure you don’t want to join us, Fel?”Â
Liner’s voice dipped slightly. I could only respond with a small, apologetic smile. Lilia clung to me without saying a word.Â
“…Sorry. For now, I want to keep pushing forward on my own.”Â
“I see. Well, if you ever change your mind, let me know. See you around!”Â
“Thanks. See you.”Â
With that, we left the Adventurers’ Guild.Â
Maybe someday I’d have to join a party. But not yet.Â
For now, I just wanted to enjoy these free and unbound days with Lilia.Â
“……..Fel, are you staying solo because of me?”Â
“Not at all. This is just what I want.”Â
“Really? Well… if you say so.”
