Episode 92: The Deepest Part
We pulled ourselves together and returned to the corridor from earlier.
Judging from what Ardan told us about how the traps work, it seems unlikely that this corridor has traps.
It’s the path where the Kobolds attacked us, after all.
Even so, we didn’t let our guard down and kept moving forward while using magic to check for traps.
Now that I’ve tried it, I realize this action takes a ton of mental focus.
If monsters attacked us in this state, we’d be caught off guard.
“Monsters are coming this way.”
“Kobolds again. I wonder if this dungeon was built mainly around Kobolds?”
Now that I think of it, I’ve heard that dungeons tend to have biases in the types of monsters.
It must be the creator’s personal preference.
Looks like the ancient person who built this dungeon chose to use Kobolds.
“Kobolds have good noses and are quick on their feet. But they’re not that strong compared to other monsters. They’re stronger than Goblins, but don’t multiply as much.”
“Goblins are probably easy to make. So there tends to be a lot of them.”
From everything we’ve talked about so far, it’s clear that monsters are made from magic power.
The ancient person who made this dungeon used the earth veins’ magic power.
So then, this planet also likely uses magic power to create monsters.
The monster that can probably be made with the least amount of magic power is likely the Goblin.
It also makes sense that magic stones are clumps of magic power.
And those clumps are cleverly used to make magic tools.
“They’re here.”
Jill had already drawn his sword.
Lost in thought, I quickly snapped to attention and readied myself.
No good—spacing out in an unsecured area is out of the question.
Kobolds lit by the glow of Small Light came running toward us.
If they’d jumped out from the dark, it’d be one thing. But this time, they were totally exposed.
Even so, they bravely charged in. There were two of them.
Jill and Ardan took them down easily.
“That Small Light spell is really handy. If we had been using lanterns, we might’ve noticed them later.”
“With this level of brightness, it’d be hard for them to ambush us. The only option would be to wait around a corner.”
“Looks like they’re trying to do exactly that. They’re waiting around that corner.”
I pointed to a side path.
Since monsters are there, it probably means there aren’t any traps beyond that.
Naturally, we’re not just going to run straight in.
I cast magic toward the spot where the Kobolds were lying in wait.
“Fireball!”
As the ball of fire hit, Kobolds jumped out screaming.
They were already pretty damaged. So I finished them off easily with a follow-up Fire Arrow.
“Fel, what’s beyond this?”
“At the end of the corridor, there’s a small room. It’s a dead end.”
“Same structure as the last room. Alright, let’s check it out.”
“This time for sure—treasure~!”
As we walked down the corridor, a door with the same design as before came into view.
According to Ardan, it was trapped.
“Looks like this pattern is going to keep repeating.”
“The creator must’ve really liked setting traps. We should be more careful moving forward.”
“Yeah. Even in monster-filled corridors, there might still be traps.”
Just like before, Lilia disarmed the trap. And then I destroyed the door with magic.
Finally, we entered the room—but it was also empty.
“No treasure.”
“There’s always next time.”
The second time around, I was used to it.
I didn’t get my hopes up too much anymore.
Jill looked disappointed, though.
And so, we kept moving forward. But by the end of our first day of exploration, we didn’t find a single treasure.
There were several small rooms, but nothing inside.
—
Day Two of Dungeon Exploration.
We went even deeper than yesterday.
By this point, there were fewer small rooms. And some of the corridors started having traps.
Things like pitfall traps that collapse under a certain weight, or spears that jut out sideways from the corridor—likely triggered by metal.
There were also some very suspicious-looking switches.
“There are fewer monsters now, but they’ve gotten stronger~.”
“Seems like the monsters around here are higher quality. Mad Kobolds, Kobold Generals. As the larger monsters increase, the corridors are getting wider too.”
The corridor now was about three people wide, compared to before, which was just enough for two Ardans.
The ceiling was higher as well.
This space is plenty big enough for large monsters to fight in.
“But the path is turning into a single straight road. I’m not picking up any traps either. Oh—another Kobold General is coming.”
Lilia, who was using Analyze on the path, said that.
The more straightforward the path becomes, the less there is for Lilia to do.
She might be joining in the attacks soon.
If that happens, I’ll take on a support role.
“Looks like they’re planning to crush us with brute force, no tricks.”
“Well, that’s no problem for us.”
I said that while easily taking down the Kobold General that charged at us. Jill probably wants to fight stronger monsters. And that strong monster is likely guarding the final door of the dungeon.
He already seems excited to fight. Even though we’ve found zero treasure so far—he’s still walking with a spring in his step. On the other hand, my steps are getting heavier. I’m starting to wonder if we’ll end this with nothing at all……….
After walking through a similar path for a while, we finally came across a fork in the road. When I said one side leads to a room, of course we decided to go there.
“Just like you two said, there’s a door.”
“It’s been a while since we saw a door. I really hope there’s something this time.”
It seems like Elise is also getting anxious about not having found a single treasure. She emphasized “this time” pretty strongly. As always, we disarmed the trap, broke the door, and entered the room.
Inside, there were several chests lined up.
“Oh! There’s something here! I feel like we’ve finally found treasure!”
“What a coincidence, Fel. Me too.”
“Me too, me too~!”
Everyone looked a bit brighter. Ardan didn’t say anything, but it seemed like he was curious too.
“First, we check for traps. I don’t think there are any, but just in case.”
If there were traps on the chests, even the one who set them could get caught when opening. That’s probably why such chests usually don’t have traps.
Ardan’s check was done quickly. As expected, there weren’t any traps.
“Alright, it’s safe. Let’s open them up right away.”
“I wonder what’s inside~”
Jill rubbed his hands together happily and opened one of the chests. Inside was a dagger. It had beautiful red and gold decorations. Jill drew it from its sheath, but the blade itself didn’t look especially unusual.
“Hmm, looks fancy but that’s about it. Might be worth some money if we sell it.”
“What’s in this one? Oh, probably a magic bag.”
“Nice! That’s real treasure!”
Lilia looked happy. The magic bag’s capacity… it’s about the same as the ones we already have. That should still sell for a good price. The rest of the chests had gold bars and gemstones inside.
“Looks like this room was a hit.”
“Seems so. Maybe this dungeon was hiding this treasure all along?”
Elise tapped her cheek with her fist lightly.
If this is the main treasure, there might not be much point going further. The deeper we go, the stronger the monsters and the harsher the traps. If we wanted to play it safe, stopping here would make sense.
“But if we go deeper, there’s gotta be even better treasure. We haven’t even fought the dungeon boss yet. Of course we’re going, right?”
Jill, finally having gotten some treasure, looked at us with eyes that said, “You guys are coming too, right?”
We looked at each other. But no one spoke against it.
We didn’t have any time restrictions. And honestly, we did want to reach the very end.
“Yeah. We’re the first adventurers to come here. Let’s go as far as we can.”
“Right. If there’s even better treasure ahead and someone else takes it, I won’t be able to sleep at night.”
Elise didn’t seem against it either. We nodded, and continued our dungeon exploration.
And then, the next day—
We finally reached the very end of the dungeon. Along the way, we had found several other treasures too. Five magic bags, over a dozen ancient magical tools, and a huge amount of ancient gold coins.
Put simply—we were rich.
“That must be the boss of this dungeon. Is that a Kobold King?”
“Right on, Fel. This whole dungeon’s been all about Kobolds from start to finish. Someone must’ve really liked Kobolds.”
“I remember… if you fill a dungeon with the same type of monster, it gives a bonus.”
Pii-chan said that like it just remembered. That probably means this Kobold King is stronger than usual. We don’t know how much stronger, but we should definitely stay alert.
“Stronger than a normal Kobold King, huh? I’m pumped.”
Jill said quietly.
