Episode 93: Kobold King
The room at the farthest end was where the Kobold King resided. It was the largest space we had seen in the dungeon so far.Â
It was probably built so that fast-moving monsters could make full use of their mobility.
“I wonder how strong monsters get when they’re powered up with a bonus?”Â
“It depends on the monster. In the case of Kobolds, their mobility is probably what’s been enhanced.”Â
Even Pii-chan didn’t seem to know the details. But it was good enough to know that this Kobold King might be stronger than usual.Â
That meant we wouldn’t be caught off guard and overwhelmed.
“Alright then, let’s go with our usual formation. I’ll go first and watch how the enemy acts. Everyone, make your own decisions based on what you see.”Â
“Got it. Since it seems fast, it might not focus on Ardan like usual.”Â
“If that’s the case, then Elise might be in danger?”Â
I looked over at Elise. But she didn’t seem too concerned.
“It’s fine. If it comes down to it, I can put up a Shield with light magic. And if I get a little injured, I can heal it instantly.”Â
Apparently, Elise could use the Shield spell, even though we had never seen her do it before.Â
She had probably just never needed to use it up until now—thanks to Ardan and the others consistently drawing enemy attention.
“Just in case, I’ll keep an eye on Elise too.”Â
“Thanks, Fel. We don’t know how fast that thing is. Alright, everyone ready?”Â
“Leave it to me.”Â
“I’m good to go.”Â
We each nodded.Â
Seeing that, Ardan leapt from the hallway into the wide open space.Â
Finally noticing us, the Kobold King let out a roar.Â
We had used the Scent Erase magic so it wouldn’t notice us earlier. It must’ve been pretty shocked.Â
Ardan didn’t flinch at the roar and charged in.Â
The Kobold King’s expression didn’t show it, but it seemed shaken and took the charge head-on.Â
The Kobold King staggered backward. Then, to follow up, Ardan swung his mace down.Â
However, it was blocked with both hands. Even so, the attack seemed to have done damage.Â
A low groan came from the Kobold King. Sensing danger, the King quickly jumped back to create distance.Â
They stared each other down for a moment. Then, using its speed, the Kobold King rushed in.Â
Ardan blocked it with his shield without issue. But this time, when he swung his mace in return, it was easily dodged.Â
The Kobold King jumped to the side, kicked off the ground, and came at him again.Â
But its claws were deflected by the shield.Â
With a growl that sounded irritated, the King backed off slightly.Â
It seemed like the Kobold King was completely focused on Ardan alone.Â
As they stared each other down again, Jill suddenly closed in from the King’s blind spot.Â
Sensing killing intent, the Kobold King turned to look—but was a bit too late.Â
Jill’s sword sliced off its right arm.Â
The King’s eyes went wide at the unexpected strike and it jumped back.Â
But Ardan had predicted that and was already behind it.
“How about this!”Â
Ardan’s mace slammed deeply into the Kobold King’s leg.Â
There was an awful sound, like bones breaking.Â
Still, the King used its one good leg to retreat rapidly.Â
That created some distance from Ardan and Jill.Â
With that space, we could use magic without hitting them.Â
Also, the Kobold King’s mobility had dropped sharply.
“Fireball!”Â
“Stone Ball!”Â
My magic and Lilia’s hit the Kobold King.Â
The King let out some strange sound and disappeared.Â
In its place were a large stone and a magic stone.Â
“Nice work, both of you.”Â
“Man, I wanted to land one more hit… that was a missed chance.”Â
“When it moves that fast, even landing a single blow is tough, right? One hit is more than enough.”Â
“Yeah, true…”Â
Just like Pii-chan said, the Kobold King’s leg strength had likely been powered up by the bonus.Â
It was really fast.
Ardan was on the defensive, so he was probably able to block with his shield.Â
If it had been a battle where we had to chase the Kobold King, the fight would’ve dragged on.Â
If I had been attacked, I probably wouldn’t have been able to dodge.Â
I’m glad I stayed hidden until the end.
“Are you hurt? Hmm, looks like you’re not.”Â
Elise rejoined us, and we decided to open the door the Kobold King had been guarding.Â
Ardan, having caught his breath, inspected the door. He finished quickly.Â
It didn’t seem to be trapped.
We broke the door and entered the room. It was where we found a pedestal.Â
On top of the pedestal sat a square metal box.Â
The metal box was covered with multiple layers of geometric patterns.Â
Could this be what’s called “enchantment”?
“Lilia, this looks enchanted, right?”Â
“Seems like it. I can’t tell what kind of enchantment it is, though.”Â
“If it’s just on the box, maybe it’s for preservation or something? Who knows, maybe the contents are food.”
I once heard a story about a fruit called the Golden Apple.Â
They said eating it would extend your lifespan.Â
Is that really true?Â
Lilia looked displeased at my mention of food.
“Even if it’s preserved, I don’t want to eat it.”
We surrounded the mysterious box.Â
It was about the size you could hold with both arms.Â
I used Analyze to check. But there didn’t seem to be any traps.Â
There was nothing strange about it.
“There’s nothing suspicious about the box.”Â
“Alright, then let’s try opening it.”Â
“A treasure guarded by the dungeon boss, huh? I’m curious to see what’s inside.”
Just like Jill said, this was the treasure at the deepest part of our first dungeon.Â
I wonder what kind of treasure it contains.
Ardan quietly opened the lid of the box.Â
Everyone leaned in to look inside.
“What is this?”Â
“A map, a compass, and… a letter?”Â
“All of them seem to be in great condition. Looks like the box really does have a preservation function. Even just the box alone must be pretty valuable.”
The map and letter weren’t like the ones we saw in ancient ruins before that would crumble to dust when touched.Â
They looked as fresh as if they had just been put inside.
The mysterious compass lying next to them also seemed to function without issue.Â
The needle was swaying gently.
“I wonder what this compass is pointing to?”Â
“Hmm?”
Jill seemed intrigued by Elise’s words and pulled out his own compass.Â
He checked it several times.
“It doesn’t seem to be pointing north. It’s pointing at something else.”Â
“Something else? Maybe it has something to do with the map and the letter?”
We opened the map, and there was a mark placed on one spot in the ocean.Â
It might be that the compass was pointing to that location.
“This side’s the continent where the Kingdom of Fortune is. And this side is the continent we’re on now.”
We opened the map we bought from the shop to compare.Â
The coastlines were a little different, but it probably matched.Â
There seemed to be a number of islands we didn’t know about in between.
“So there’s something here. If it’s preserved this carefully, then there must be an incredible treasure there.”Â
“A treasure under the sea, huh? Bringing it up sounds like a pain.”
As we were talking, Elise raised her hand to stop us.
“Hey, according to this letter, it looks like the place isn’t underwater.”
Elise was reading the letter while checking something in her notebook.Â
Could it be she made a decoding chart for the ancient language?Â
I’m surprised she actually understood that long, sleep-inducing explanation.
Everyone’s attention turned to Elise.
“It’s not underwater?”Â
“That’s right. Apparently, it’s a floating land in the sky.”Â
“A floating land in the sky!?”
Something outrageous just came up.Â
A floating land in the sky…….… I can’t believe that.Â
Going underwater would be hard, but reaching a floating land would be just as difficult.
“What’s supposed to be there?”Â
“Apparently, it’s called the ‘Holy Land’. The details are unknown. But I guess just calling it that was enough for the ancient people to understand what it meant?”
The Holy Land, huh.Â
I wonder what’s there…
