Episode 94: A Mithril Sword…
How should we handle the information we obtained in the deepest part?
We couldn’t decide right away.
So we decided to hold off on it until we returned to Kikyo.
What we needed to do now was to return safely to the surface.
There was no chance of getting lost on the way back. But that didn’t mean we had defeated all the monsters along the route.
We had only gone down the path that led to the small chamber ahead.
There were still other paths we hadn’t taken.
“The monsters might have moved around. Let’s stay alert until the very end.”
“Once we get to the surface, maybe we should block off this dungeon’s entrance.”
“Yeah. Since we opened the entrance on our own, it could cause problems later if something happens.”
The entrance had been made as narrow as possible. But most of the Kobolds that lived in the dungeon were small enough to pass through.
They said monsters wouldn’t come out of the dungeon
But there was still a slim chance it could happen.
This area was the Forest of Lost Paths shrouded in deep fog.
If the Kobolds made it to the surface and started multiplying, by the time someone noticed, they could have formed a huge army.
In the magical frontier, mysterious mass proliferations of monsters occasionally occur. And armies of monsters attack towns and villages.
That could happen with this dungeon as well.
It’s better to reduce the risk as much as possible.
Because we headed straight for the surface, we barely encountered any monsters.
As soon as we reached the surface, we used earth magic to block the entrance.
“I doubt many people could make it this far.”
“Right. Unless someone’s deeply loved by the Fairies, they wouldn’t be able to make it through a Fairy-trained Forest of Lost Paths.”
“There’s no one as loved by the Fairies as Aniki, after all!”
“……!”
Ah, Pii-chan is being squeezed again.
This time it’s being wrapped up entirely—both arms and both legs.
Looks pretty painful. I need to stop her quickly!
“Hey Lilia, maybe that’s enough…”
“Pii-chan just never learns.”
“It’s just that desperate to push Fel and Lilia together. Even though they’re already together.”
“Jill, just pretend you didn’t notice. Don’t be tactless.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Honestly, I’d rather those conversations happen when the person in question isn’t around.
Feeling awkward, I tried to pull Lilia off of Pii-chan.
However…
She was clinging on using her legs too, like a crab’s pincers. So it took some time to peel her off.
Pii-chan had turned pale blue all over.

Several days after clearing the dungeon.
We returned to the town of Kikyo and discussed what to do with the information on the “Holy Land”.
In the end, we decided to entrust it to the person who had previously helped us with ancient script research.
Eventually, we could buy an airship—once one gets completed—and head there ourselves.
But we had no idea when that would be.
So if we handed everything over to the researcher—well, “entrust” it— they’d likely investigate what it all meant.
And maybe, if things go well, they could even take us there using a state-owned airship.
“We’re not historians or anything. I think that’s fine. Of course, you’re not planning to hand it over for free, are you?”
“Of course not. I don’t know how much money we’ll get. But at the very least, I’m going to negotiate so that we can go with them when they go there.”
The most important item is definitely the compass.
We checked the direction it was pointing while comparing it to the map. And it’s almost certain that it points to the location of the “Holy Land”.
In other words, as long as we have this compass, we can reach the “Holy Land”.
The map and letter were included together probably to explain what the compass was pointing to.
“So we’ll be handing over the compass too. We don’t have a spare, so we’ll need to make sure it doesn’t get broken.”
“It would’ve been nice if there was another one. But there was only that one.”
“Considering how securely it was stored, maybe even back then there weren’t many of them.”
In other words, they probably wanted to keep the place secret that badly.
Now I’m even more curious about what’s actually there.
“Pii-chan, do you know anything?”
“Hmm, I haven’t heard of it. I might have seen it, but I wouldn’t have realized it. After all, there were so many places where things could be seen.”
That’s true.
Since you can see any kind of room, passage, or vehicle, you wouldn’t be able to tell whether what you saw was the “Holy Land” or not.
Unless there were a sign posted, that would be a different story.
“That just makes it even more important to leave it to the researcher. If we go on our own and something happens, we’d be in trouble.”
“It might be a place where something dangerous is sealed. I want to fight strong monsters, but I don’t want to go so far as to break some dangerous seal just to fight.”
“I wouldn’t want to go down in history as the adventurer who almost destroyed the world.”
I agree.
I don’t particularly want my name to go down in history. But I absolutely refuse to have my name remembered in disgrace.
A few days after we decided what to do with the information we found in the dungeon, we were contacted that Jill’s custom mithril sword had been completed.
Since we had already told them where we were staying, they sent us the message.
“I’ve been waiting for this day! All right, let’s go!”
“Yeah. Jill’s been looking forward to it.”
“I’ll come along too.”
“I’m coming too!”
“Okay, then, let’s all go together.”
Elise hadn’t said anything. But she was also brought along—half by force.
Apparently, she wasn’t too interested.
If anything, Elise is more interested in magic than swords.
She probably has no use for a sword she won’t be using.
As for me, even if I don’t use it, it still appeals to the heart of a man.
I’d love to buy a house someday and put it on display.
Following after the hopping and cheerful Jill, we arrived at an area in Kikyo Town that you could call the craftsmen’s street.
White smoke rose from the buildings. And from somewhere, sharp metallic sounds of clanging and banging could be heard.
It looked like many workshops lined the area.
People passing by were each carrying large boxes.
They were probably delivering completed products or picking up supplies they were short on.
We passed by several interesting-looking workshops, until Jill stopped in front of a certain house.
Apparently, this was the destination.
The house was a size larger than the surrounding buildings. It had an old-fashioned feel to it.
It was probably a long-established workshop in the area.
With that in mind, it wouldn’t be strange if they had the equipment to process mithril.
After calling out, we entered the workshop.
The craftsmen inside gave us strange looks. But one of them soon approached us with a smile.
“Jill-san, we’ve been waiting for you. The item you ordered is finished.”
“Can I see it right away?”
Almost unable to contain himself, Jill replied, leaning in.
We were then led by the craftsman further into the workshop.
There, on top of a desk, was a sword.
But—hold on a second.
This shape looked different from the sword Jill always used……….
When I looked at Jill, he had a rather awkward expression on his face.
He looked like he was just about to say, “This isn’t it.”
“At first, we shaped it according to your request, Jill-san. But we realized we couldn’t make something satisfactory in that form. So we made something we could proudly present to you.”
“O-oh…”
Still, a mithril sword is a mithril sword. So he couldn’t really complain.
I don’t know exactly what kind of order he gave, but he probably didn’t say something like, “Make sure it’s exactly this shape.”
Basically, he just really wanted a mithril sword, right? That’s probably what it was.
“I personally guarantee the quality. There aren’t many swords made from mithril out there! Now, please, try drawing it.”
“O-okay…”
Pressed by the craftsman’s enthusiasm, Jill drew the sword.
It slid out smoothly—a slightly curved blade.
That curve seemed to make it easier to draw.
Upon closer inspection, the blade had an edge on only one side.
Jill couldn’t hide his confusion.
“Looks like this is your first time seeing this type of sword. This side without the blade is called the spine. And it’s useful when you want to knock enemies out without killing them.”
“So, basically, it’s useful when you want to capture them alive. The blade is really clean. Mind if I try cutting something?”
“Of course. We’ve prepared a testing area in the backyard.”
Saying that, he led us out through the back exit.
