The Silver Blade had arrived in the Mirdia territory. And they went missing.
That news spread throughout the town in an instant. And along with the unrest, a wave of disappointment—“Even the Silver Blade was no good”—spread among the people.
Meanwhile, the Unknown steadily continued preparations for departure.
Although the request content had switched from support to search, what we needed to do wasn’t that different.
The highest priority was to locate and protect the Silver Blade, who was likely still alive somewhere. The subjugation of the Undead King was, well, something to do if they could.
And finally, the time for departure arrived.
All the members gathered behind the home base.
“Got everything packed?”
“All ready.”
“Alright, Silk, start it.”
From within a white furball, an old-fashioned staff came out.
A dense magical power that even I could recognize was released and covered the area.
Teleportation magic—high-difficulty magic that doesn’t rely on magic tools.
Though it can only teleport to places already visited, its usefulness is extremely high. They say only a handful of magicians can use it. But it seems our Silk is among that handful.
Magic deployment without incantation.
In an instant, the scenery changed. And we appeared inside some house.
“Where is this place?”
“A house I used to live in a while ago. How nostalgic.”
The inside of the house was empty. It had no items or furniture at all.
Looking out the window, trees were densely growing—it seemed like a forest.
I’ve never heard they lived in Mirdia.
On top of that, the house was quite damaged—there were no signs of anyone living there for the past few years.
“Lux, there are undead outside.”
Hiding near the window, Felice and I peeked outside.
In the forest outside, several Skeletons were wandering about. They were occasionally stopping and looking around.
“Purify, purifyyyyyyyyyy!”
“Ah.”
Before I could give an order, Zain moved.
They opened the door and leapt out. They then released holy magic in a dome shape.
The holy light erased the miasma filling the forest along with the undead.
That’s not something an average healer could do.
They’re at a court healer level—maybe even above that.
“Grannaughts, do you detect any human presence in the forest?”
“Wait. I’ll check.”
Grannaughts’ eyes glowed blue.
According to them, they were sensing the heat of living beings.
Their range far exceeds my own detection net—it seems they can see across a wide area. Honestly, what kind of race are they? The mystery only deepens.
“No signs in the forest. But beyond here, it looks like there’s a town.”
“That’s probably the central city of Mirdia. My father is surely still there…”
“I’ll purify all the undeaddddd!”
“Thank you. You’re so kind, Zain.”
Zain bashfully covered their face and trembled.
They’re seriously not used to being praised. But, well, with their appearance, I guess it’s not surprising there’s no one who compliments them… Poor guy.
—
“What terrible miasma. Are the survivors even okay?”
Mirdia Territory Central City, Meruel.
The fortified city, surrounded by high walls that repel monsters, was covered in a black fog-like miasma.
The castle in the center of the city was wrapped in an even denser miasma.
The main gate protecting the town had probably been destroyed during the Undead King’s invasion. The heavy door had been shattered and left as it was on the ground.
We should assume that other monsters besides the undead had entered and were wandering around.
Felice tightly clenched her fist. She was seemingly enduring the storm of intense emotions.
She had her people taken, her retainers taken, her family taken—on top of that, she was forced to flee her homeland.
There was a path of giving up everything and just surviving. But she chose the path of reclaiming it all herself. A thorny path that couldn’t be fulfilled without a miracle.
And she kept moving forward—and finally returned.
“Don’t forget our top priority. We came to save the Silver Blade.”
“I understand. But I can’t help but feel restless. It feels like… my father is calling for help.”
I placed a hand on Felice’s shoulder to calm her down.
“Our party is the strongest. Whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter. Believe we’re the strongest. The best buff is believing in yourself and standing up. People call that ‘courage’.”
“Courage…”
“If we’re the strongest, maybe we’ll not only save the Silver Blade. But we’ll also defeat the Undead King while we’re at it. I’m counting on you, sub-leader.”
“Yes.”
It looked like she had regained her composure.
Her usual smile returned.
While we talked, Grannaughts began searching for heat sources.
“Confirmed heat source in the castle.”
“So one way or another, we’ll have to pay the Undead King a visit. Let’s check inside first.”
We passed through the gate into the town.
Since it hadn’t been maintained for years, holes had formed in the outer walls and roofs of many buildings. Some had completely collapsed.
The air was heavy, gloomy, and filled with miasma.
“Uhhh… uuuuhhh…”
“Ahhhhh…”
Two figures emerged from behind a building.
Drooling and making meaningless sounds, their eyes were rolled back—these people were moving without will. They looked like Zombies.
More people emerged one after another from behind the buildings.
They had clearly lost their sanity—but their movements were far too uniform.
They looked too healthy to be Zombies—no signs of rot either.
“Charm magic? No… Brainwashing? Control?
Making them lose sanity with miasma and controlling with magic? But would that result in such uniform movement?”
“Silk doesn’t think it’s magic. Those things don’t have a given spell formula. Without a spell formula, magic can’t be deployed or maintained.”
Silk can see spell formulas.
Any skilled mage can do that—but as an enchanter, I can’t.
If it’s not magic, then how are they being controlled?
“The Undead King led countless undead and invaded this town. Skeletons, Zombies, and even formless undead.”
“Wraiths, huh. If it’s using them to possess people and control them… While possessed, they’d be unconscious and thus unaffected by the miasma. If we drive the Wraiths out of their bodies, we can get the townspeople back.”
“Yes. That’s why I believed if I defeated the Undead King, I could save them.”
The living townspeople were turned into corpses while still alive. They filled the streets.
Among them marched actual undead—Skeletons, Zombies, Skeleton Wizards, Skeleton Knights.
Zain stepped forward.
Their arms hung limp. And with bloodshot eyes, they stared at the enemy.
“I’ll leave the clearing to you. Go all out.”
“I-I-I’ll heaaaalllll themmmmmm! Puuuurifyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!”
The holy magic Holy Field was deployed.
It was a mid-tier spell that purified a wide area of undead and miasma using holy power.
But their insane output gave it the power of a high-tier spell—like Sanctuary.
The light spread in a circle from beneath their feet and engulfed the entire town.
White mist-like entities flew out of the townspeople’s bodies.
But they couldn’t escape the holy light—screaming, they vanished one after another.
With the possessing entities gone, the townspeople collapsed in heaps.
The undead mixed among them were purified. They were dropping to the stone pavement like puppets with their strings cut.
“C-c-c-c-cleaned iiiiiiit!! Hya hya! Healed! Purified! Purifieeeeeeed!!”
Zain twisted their body and laughed as if they had gone insane.
