Enchantment Arts is a derivative magic that shares the same origin as Orthodox Magic.
It is said that what was once known as Written Magic became independent and gradually evolved into the current form of EnchantmentArts.
There are two methods of enchanting: “Written Enchantment” and “Engraved Enchantment.”
Written Enchantment is a speed-specialized method.
Its duration is short. And compared to Engraved Enchantment, its effects are also small.
In exchange, it is very easy to use and the biggest advantage is that it can be performed anytime, anywhere.
Engraved Enchantment, as the name implies, is a technique that involves directly carving the base magical letters to apply the enchantment.
As long as the letters do not disappear, the effect is permanent and very powerful.
The drawback is that it takes considerable effort and time. It is not suited for battle and is generally used to enchant weapons or armor.
“—That is the basic knowledge of Enchantment Arts. Unlike the ‘verbal magic’ used in Orthodox Magic, enchanting is done by writing letters. Therefore, the speed of your brush directly links to the speed of enchanting. Of course, it’s not enough to just be fast. You need to draw the letters both quickly and accurately.”
In my home’s dining room, I write on the blackboard as I explain.
The three people gathered around the table listening attentively are the new recruits who requested to become my disciples.
Two of them seem to just be tagging along. But it’s not like they’ll never interact with an enchanter in the future. So it doesn’t hurt to have some foundational knowledge.
Right now, the one being my disciple was the thief girl. She was taking notes while listening.
As usual, her face is expressionless. But I can sense her passion.
The thief girl raises her hand.
“If you write magical letters accurately, is there some benefit?”
“Magical letters are the ‘forms’ that draw power from the deep layers of the world. Each form has its own nature. And even now, magicians and enchanters are searching for the most efficient forms. Now, back to the point—the benefit of drawing letters accurately is that you can bring out stable effects. As I said before, magical letters change in effect and efficiency depending on their shape. Extra hooks or elongations can sometimes weaken or strengthen the effect. You wouldn’t want to use an enchantment with inconsistent results, right? That’s why we set standards to always get consistent effects.”
“Is that what accurate magical letters are?”
Exactly. The standard magical letters defined in block form so that anyone can replicate them—those are the basics.
However, don’t misunderstand—this is just the basic form for beginners and intermediate users.
The more efficient magical letters are in cursive. And the beauty of the letters directly affects the result. The more beautiful the letter, the stronger the effect. Therefore, the letters written by skilled enchanters are artistic and incomprehensible to amateurs.
This is the reason enchanters are said to have high expertise.
And they must be able to write those letters under any circumstances.
Even if a comrade is about to die right in front of them, they must keep writing. That is the duty assigned the moment one becomes an enchanter. A fragile heart can’t handle it.
In that sense, the thief girl might be suitable.
Her emotional fluctuations are small. Which is ideal for enchanters.
She always has an expressionless face and reacts little. Moreover, the thief class is suited for stealth-based combat. Agile and faster than other classes.
Maybe she’s actually a pretty promising candidate?
“Today, I’ll teach you one enchantment even a beginner can use. It’s useful not just in battle but also in daily life. If you master this, you might be able to reach the next rank.”
“Really!? We can go up to D-rank!?”
“If you master it. Feel honored. Normally you wouldn’t get a chance to be taught directly by a top-class enchanter like me.”
The thief girl nodded and muttered, “We’re lucky.”
Continuing the lesson, I handed out sheets of paper to each of them.
“Write this magical letter on that paper like your life depends on it. I think you already know, but don’t write sloppily. Write carefully and precisely every single time. Get to the point where you can draw it with your eyes closed.”
I wrote a three-letter magical symbol on the blackboard.
“This is the enchantment for ‘Physical Guard’. It reduces damage taken, increases healing ability, and gradually restores stamina. It’s highly recommended. With only a few letters, it’s easy to use even for beginners.”
“I want it! This is the buff we wanted the most! I’ll learn it too. So Bell and Rinoa, let’s work hard so we can all use it!”
“It’s certainly convenient if we can all use it.”
“You two don’t need to learn it. Only Rinoa is learning from Lux.”
““Why!?””
Rinoa was being questioned by the two. She stayed silent for a while. Her face was slightly red. She was averting her eyes.
The sword girl suddenly realized something. She held her forehead and went, “Ahh, so that’s it!”
The mage girl looked puzzled. She did not understand at all.
Well, I don’t get it either.
“But this enchantment is better if everyone learns it. Let Rinoa learn a different enchantment next time.”
“That’s true. Rinoa, is that okay with you?”
“If there’s a next time, I can compromise.”
Hey, no one said anything about a next time.
Are these girls assuming I’ll always accept their requests? I’m not always free, you know.
While I was thinking that, the three of them were already scribbling magical letters with feather pens.
I quietly peeked at their hands from behind.
The sword girl’s handwriting was messy and crooked. It was just like her personality.
Had she already forgotten my warning? She was adding unnecessary hooks and extensions—it was pretty bad.
The mage girl wrote beautiful and basic letters. As expected of a magician.
She probably learned it in her academy classes.
However, her writing speed was slow. In Orthodox Magic, neatness is prioritized over speed when it comes to magical letters. She’ll need practice in speed.
The thief girl was accurate and fast.
Among them, her letters were the most beautiful. And there was no hesitation in her moving pen. The more she wrote, the more she eliminated waste and increased speed—without losing accuracy. No doubt, she has talent.
A disciple, huh… This is trouble. I had no intention of taking on a disciple.
But this girl’s talent is too great to leave alone.
Maybe teaching her regularly isn’t a bad idea. Well, it depends on her, though.
—
“I can’t do it anymore, I’m tired and bored!”
“Akane-chan, that’s too soon. You’ve only filled half the paper.”
“’Cause it’s boring. Swinging a sword is way more fun.”
The one who gave up first was the sword girl.
It’s just as expected, or rather, I’m impressed that she’s exactly what she looks like.
Enchanter training is extremely dull and indoors. It doesn’t suit someone aggressive and easily bored.
In that regard, the mage girl is suited for it.
Her delighted attitude as she keeps writing letters shows she’s the right type for a magician or enchanter.
“This is so fun! Akane-chan, you’re missing out! Hah, hah… writing letters is fun! So funnnn!”
Never mind, she’s a maniac.
Why is she an adventurer? She seems like the kind who should stay at the academy and be a researcher.
The thief girl continued writing silently. She was even filling the back of the paper.
Soon, the whole paper would be covered in letters.
“I’m done. I can write it with my eyes closed now.”
“Then let me test you. I’ll lend you a short wand—try drawing the letter in the air.”
“Lux-san’s wand…”
Receiving the wand, the thief girl closed her eyes and focused.
She was rehearsing how to draw it in her mind.
Let me say this first—this is a challenge that’s meant to fail.
Indeed, magical energy trails can remain as traces in the air. But unlike paper, air has depth. Even a small misalignment can alter the letter and affect the result. Enchanting is delicate and deep.
*Swish*—the wand tip fixes in the air.
That alone made my eyes widen.
Holding the tip steady is a basic but vital skill for enchanters.
She had already mastered it.
The wand tip draws the magical letter in the air.
When she finished, ‘Physical Guard’ was enchanted on her.
Even if it hadn’t activated, I could tell. It was a perfect enchantment.
“Rinoa, right? From now on, show up directly without paying requests. I’ll teach you useful enchantments.”
“Is that okay?”
“I may be a sloppy guy, but I’m serious about enchanting. You’ve got talent. Whether you succeed is up to you. But if you learn it, you’ll definitely be useful to your party. I guarantee it.”
“I’m happy. I’ll be in your care, Master.”
“Don’t call me that. I’m not good with that stuff.”
“Then, Lux-sensei.”
That’s better.
The word “Master” brings back trauma.
It reminds me of my own teacher.
Suddenly, the door opened and Felice peeked in.
“Thank you all for your hard work. The bath is ready, so please go in. I’m also making dinner. So feel free to relax.”
