The next day. Zain and I went to visit Avril at the Umbrella Guild.
“Once again, let me thank you. I shudder to imagine what would’ve happened if I hadn’t asked Unknown for help. Thank you.”
“Ah, ah, aaah, I’m sorry about that time.”
“Stop. I’ll remember it.”
Avril was sitting in the guild master’s chair. She had a calm expression.
She looked like she was in her late twenties. She seemed pretty young. But since elves are a long-lived race, you can’t judge actual age by appearance. It’s common to hear that someone who looks in their twenties is actually in their sixties.
However, there was a mountain of paperwork on her desk. Even Zain and I could easily predict the hell that awaited her.
Looking closely, it seemed like her eyes had no light in them…
Looking around the room, it was neat and tidy, with nothing unnecessary.
Even among guild master rooms, this one felt very different.
The guild master room in Avantale was full of stacked books and smelled dusty. But well, I’m used to that. So it would probably feel weird if it suddenly became clean.
“This is your reward. I added a 30% bonus.”
“That’s generous.”
“You achieved more than expected. It’s only fair.”
“Then, we’ll gladly accept it.”
I took the reward placed on the desk and stored it in my waist magic storage.
Of course, that wasn’t the end.
Avril, as if finishing the small talk, suddenly put on a serious expression.
“Let me ask you plainly—was that man really a demon?”
“Normally, you’d think he wasn’t. No one’s ever seen one before. He didn’t even have wings or a tail like in the old documents. He looked like an ordinary human. Even if he was pretending, his strength was abnormal. We can’t ignore him.”
“Either way, he’s a dangerous being. Did you report to HQ?”
“Of course I did. I told them there’s a possibility a demon appeared. But since there’s no clear evidence, they replied that they can’t spare personnel.”
“So they’re going to wait and see?”
“It can’t be helped. If I were HQ, I’d give the same answer. Until we know for sure, we have to deal with it ourselves. By the way—”
Avril’s gaze fixed on Zain.
She was probably about to ask what was bothering me too.
“I’m grateful for your help. But I need to know. How did you know the curse on me was from a demon? At that point, I hadn’t told you he was a demon.”
Her eyes sharpened.
I folded my arms and silently listened to the conversation.
Zain blatantly averted her gaze.
“I-I-I, I read it, in s-s-some, b-b-book.”
“Which book?”
“I-I-I forgot.”
“Remember!”
“Now, now, calm down. It’s true that it was a demon’s curse, right?”
“Y-y-yes.”
Zain looked at me.
Their eyes were pleading. It was like they wanted me to believe them.
“I believe what Zain says.”
“I see. Well, fine. For now, I’ll leave it at that. But you’ll have to explain it eventually. At least after this incident is over.”
“…Okay.”
“Don’t look so down. You’re making me look like the bad guy. It’s not like I’m saying this to be mean. It’s part of my job as a guild master. I’m responsible for protecting this town. Really, how can you be so sensitive despite looking like that?”
“Don’t mind what the elf says, okay?”
“You could say that more nicely.”
Resetting the conversation.
Avril cleared her throat with a *ekhem* and sharpened her eyes.
“Now, to the main topic. I believe that man is still in this town. We still don’t know what the ‘surprise’ is. And the timing overlaps too well with the Slime outbreak.”
“Oh, that thing the newbies are happily hunting. You originally went underground to investigate that cause and met him, right?”
“Yes. We’ve had Slime outbreaks before. But this time, the growth speed is abnormal. No matter how much we hunt, we can’t keep up. That’s why I promoted Slime hunting in other territories to buy time while we investigate the cause. That’s when that man showed up to interfere. I don’t think it’s unrelated.”
It’s certainly suspicious.
Randomly running into a demon deep in a dungeon isn’t normal.
Did he show himself to prevent us from getting close to something?
“So, what do you want us to do?”
“I want you to escort me. I want you to accompany me on the Slime investigation. I’ll pay three times the previous reward.”
“That’s generous. Because we might run into that man?”
“I won’t deny it. It’s not a bad deal for you either. Unknown is strong. But it still gets treated coldly by society and lacks trust. Even HQ still sees you as low-ranking within S-rank parties, just a group specialized in anti-undead. But if you uncover the cause of this Slime outbreak, HQ might reconsider—seeing you as the group that saved Umbrella.”
“Save it? Is the situation that bad?”
“If it continues like this, yes. I want to identify and stop it before it escalates.”
The reward is great. Our reputation will rise.
Not a bad job, right?
But with this kind of task, just me and Zain isn’t enough. We’ll need reinforcements.
“I’ll give you some time. So let me know if there’s anything you need. I’ll prepare whatever I can.”
“Let me borrow the guild’s communication magic device.”
“To contact Avantale?”
“I’m an enchanter. We’ll need an attacker, right?”
Preferably a sword user with fire abilities.

By the time the outside of the window turned dim,
I was in my inn room, teaching thief-chan enchantment.
“Not like that. Like this, like this.”
“Too fast—I can’t see. Do it slower.”
“Write like this, then this.”
“I saw it. But drawing with fingers is hard.”
Right now, I was teaching the ‘Confusion’ debuff.
It has relatively few characters. So it’s easy for beginners to learn.
Thief-chan had already memorized the magic symbols and was now training to use them in practice.
By the way, Zain was also in the room. They were quietly watching us from across.
“Would it be better with a staff?”
“Sensei, that’s Rinoa’s thigh. But I do want a staff.”
I lifted my gaze from the soft-looking white thigh and replied, “A staff, huh.”
It’s not impossible to enchant with just fingers. But it could develop bad habits. That’s why, during my own training, my master lent me a short staff.
She’s basically my apprentice at this point. So lending her a spare should be fine.
I pulled a short staff out from my magic storage at the waist.
“I’ll lend you this. It’s a beginner-friendly staff, easy for anyone to use.”
“Really?”
“In return, when you become great, tell people it’s all thanks to Lux-sensei.”
“Got it. I’ll tell it as a legend.”
“That’s a bit much.”
I looked toward Zain.
When they noticed my gaze, they leaned in so close it felt like they’d touch me.
“I think we should take tomorrow off. We have to wait for Felice to arrive anyway. Hey, how about we go on a little boat trip around town?”
“I’m coooomiiiiiing!!”
“It’s decided. What about you guys?”
Looking toward the door, I saw two eyes peeking through a slightly opened gap.
Whispering voices followed and the door opened.
“Ahaha, so you noticed.”
“Please let us come too!”
“What about you, Thief-chan?”
“I’m going.”
Watching the excited butts of the newbie girls, Zain looked at them with dull eyes.
