- Don’t talk from a higher position than me!
The man with blue hair looked down with a fixed smile.
We, being cautious, each drew our weapons.
“Nice to meet you. This is the second time for that elf over there, isn’t it?”
“How dare you curse me. What are you thinking, showing up so shamelessly now?”
“Oh dear, I thought you’d be pleased. Humans in the past used to leap for joy, you know. After all, becoming a servant promises non-human power and a long lifespan.”
“Servant…? Don’t tell me… the Progenitor Curse?”
“You had quite good magical power. So I thought I’d make you my subordinate. I wonder why it’s been undone.”
Right after that, an intense killing intent assaulted us.
A freezing cold, like being thrown into the depths of winter, wrapped around our entire bodies.
Even denser magical power radiated from the man.
Avril took a step back with a frightened expression.
“This kind of magical power… is it even possible?”
I was also drenched in cold sweat.
Even the Undead King hadn’t given off this much pressure.
This is a demon. A different kind of creature. It was merely wearing a human appearance.
Felice and Zain were also extremely tense.
“To be honest, you came too early. If you had come a bit later, I could’ve given you the best surprise. It’s troublesome when things happen outside the plan.”
“Answer me. What are you trying to do using those Slimes?”
“To announce the master’s return in a grand way, of course. Any ceremony needs a pre-celebration. This is the preparation. Oh, you were asking *what* we’re going to do? Naturally—
—It’s an event to feed the townspeople to the Slimes.”
The man wriggled as if he couldn’t wait for the moment.
Putting a hand on his chest, he muttered something utterly insane like, “I want to hear the sound of despair soon. I bet they’ll have such wonderful expressions.”
At the man’s feet, the giant Slime was still bubbling and birthing regular Slimes.
Avril was speechless and unable to talk.
I stepped forward in her place and raised my hand.
How this will unfold is still unknown. For now, I judged that extracting information should take priority.
“I understand you want to have the town attacked using those Slimes. You mentioned ‘the return of the master’. Who is this master?”
“Why, it’s me, of course. This land used to be my domain. People, things, everything was mine. But while I was asleep for a while, the scenery had changed beyond recognition. And what’s more, humans are walking around like they own the place, as if *they* were the masters. I was a bit shocked, you know. That even my name and face weren’t passed down.”
“You were asleep until now? Where?”
“I’m sorry, but I’ll remain silent on that question. Trying to force information out is a poor move, young magician. You have to make your target feel good so they’ll talk.”
This guy… did he mistake me for a magician?
With this short staff, it should be obvious I’m an enchanter.
Unless… he came from a time when enchanters didn’t exist?
If so, he must have been asleep for a *very* long time.
That aside, this demon really wants to talk.
In order to get more information, I’ll play along.
“Took quite a while to prepare, huh?”
“It did. But that’s the beauty of it. I handpicked the Slimes myself and carefully chose their food. Once they grew to a certain size, I had them fight captured adventurers to build combat experience. And that’s not all—I administered various potions. Finally, they’ve reached this point.”
“Demons are said to be obsessive in literature. But it seems that’s true.”
“That’s accurate. We demons are the type to obsess over things we’re interested in. You might call it a habit. By the way, is it okay to be chatting with me like this? My Slimes are still multiplying by the second, you know?”
The Slimes kept multiplying without slowing down.
But Felice’s flames could still burn them all down—for now.
No, wait. What’s with that demon’s confidence?
He said it, didn’t he?
That if we had come a little later, it would’ve been the perfect surprise.
Is everything already prepared…?
“Seems you’ve realized it. I wasn’t stalling for time. I was just genuinely chatting with you. It won’t be perfect, but let the pre-celebration begin.”
“No way—!”
The lake stirred.
With a splash, an enormous number of Slimes leapt out.
They twisted through the air like giant serpents. They were wandering in search of an exit.
What a number. If those things reach the surface, they’ll swallow the town whole.
“Don’t let them out of here! Stop them!!”
“I’ll burn them with my flames!”
“Pu-purification aaahhhhhh!”
“I won’t let them destroy my Umbrella!”
“It’s useless. It’s too late.”
The horde of Slimes found the exit near the ceiling and burst through.
Felice’s flame blast and Avril’s wind magic hit directly. But the serpent-like bodies regenerated instantly. And all of them escaped through the exit.
What remained was only the Mother Slime still producing more Slimes.
“It’s a gift for coming this far. You can have that. Do as you please.”
“Don’t mess with us! Damn demon! Wind Blast!!”
“Magic Protection.”
Avril’s high-level magic was blocked by just one defensive wall.
Still holding her staff, Avril froze as if seeing despair itself.
That must have been her strongest attack magic.
And it was blocked with just one shield.
A former A-rank top-tier offensive spell, stopped by a single barrier.
“It really is a shame I couldn’t make you a servant. What do you say? Even now, will you become one of mine? If you’re still interesting, I’ll keep you alive. I’m a talented and generous demon, you see.”
“Guh… I’d rather die. No way I’d become yours.”
“I see. That’s unfortunate.”
The demon’s feet floated gently and rose from the fountain.
Using magic, he floated without even flapping wings.
“I’ll return to the surface a bit early. I must enjoy the pre-celebration, after all. Well then, farewell.”
“Wait! Damn it!”
The demon vanished through teleportation.
(He can even teleport? What should I do? I want to return to the surface immediately, but I can’t leave that Slime be. I have no choice but to do it.)
I raised my short staff.
To the stunned Avril, I shouted,
“Get a grip! Are you just going to stand there watching the town collapse?”
“Kh… Give me orders. I’ll protect the town no matter what.”
“Target is the Mother Slime. We don’t have time. I’ll support you—take it down as fast as possible.”
“Understood.”
“L-le-leave it to meeeeee!”
We have to take it down before it becomes a Demon King.
