A red, blazing slash was unleashed from Felice’s sword.
The opposing Mother Slime twisted its formless body and dodged the sword. As a counterattack, a high-speed, ultra-fine stream of water burst out like a trailing thread.
“Guh!”
Felice instinctively took a defensive stance and blocked the stream with her sword.
However, her shoulder was slightly slashed. And bl00d sprayed out.
Zain closed in and landed a kick. But the Mother Slime shook with a *bloop*, dispersing the impact. It then struck Zain with a tentacle-like arm and sent them flying.
“Dodge it—Water Cannon!”
Avril unleashed a mid-tier water-elemental attack spell.
The opponent reacted instantly. It launched torrent of water from beneath itself. It clashed with Avril’s magic and canceled it out—but not only that, it continued toward Avril herself.
“No you doooon’t!!”
“Zain!?”
Zain stepped in front and struck the water stream with their clenched right hand.
The impact caused the water to burst apart like an explosion.
The scattered droplets fell like rain. It was splashing against the water’s surface.
What an absurd Slime. While nullifying Zain’s martial arts, it was matching multiple opponents with water-based techniques. It’s likely true—this thing is just one step away from being a Demon King. A regular Slime couldn’t possibly fight like this.
The Mother Slime rapidly absorbed water from directly below.
It formed four tentacle-like arms and launched fine streams of water from their tips. It was targeting each of us.
The footing was nearly the worst possible. But thankfully, there were only a few attacks and the trajectories were easy to read. If it had dozens of tentacles, it would’ve been a different story.
The three of us, including me, dodged while keeping a close eye on our footing.
It didn’t seem like it could unleash those streams indefinitely.
Once it had released all the water it had stored, the arms retracted and began absorbing again.
“I’m casting buffs.”
“I’ll buy you time.”
While Felice fought, I drew magic sigils.
I cast six enhancements on the three of us: ‘Speed Up’, ‘Magic Shield’, ‘Protect Shield’, ‘Attack Up’, ‘Magic Up’, and ‘Element Boost’.
Not only using my short staff, but I also drew magic symbols simultaneously with my left hand fingers.
Casting one kind of buff on multiple people at once is no issue—but casting *several types* at once means I run out of hands.
Once all the buffs were complete, next was inflicting status effects on the enemy.
It most likely has high resistance to multiple effects.
But if even one goes through, the tide could shift in our favor.
From the Mother Slime, countless water bullets were fired.
Zain used a crumbled stone pillar as a shield and watched for a chance to strike.
“Flame Slash!”
Even with a flame-imbued slash, the Mother Slime easily twisted its form to evade.
Its shapeless body is unfamiliar to fight against and has vision in all directions. Though its movement speed is slow, its actions are fast—it’s a very troublesome opponent.
“Wind Fang!”
Avril launched a wind blade while dashing.
It struck the Mother Slime directly.
However, it didn’t reach the core stone at the center. The severed parts neatly reattached themselves.
Immediately afterward, a counterattack of water bullets struck Avril.
“Ugh!?”
A water bullet hit her thigh.
Stopping her movement, countless other bullets shot through her in succession.
With bl00d spraying, Avril collapsed.
“Avril!”
“Avril-san!?”
“I—I’m fine, don’t worry about me… just defeat that thing…”
Holding her side, Avril crawled away in retreat.
The Mother Slime had already locked onto its next target.
“YOU… SHALL BE PURIFIEDDDD!!”
Zain’s fist sank into the Mother Slime.
The shockwave pierced through and gouged out its amorphous body.
Right after, the tentacle-like arm whipped them aside.
Zain crashed into a nearby rocky wall with a splash.
Meanwhile, I continued testing status effects.
‘Paralysis’ – No good.
‘Confusion’ – Also no good.
‘Bind’ – Didn’t work.
‘Sleep’—?
“Flame Slash!”
“!?!”
The Mother Slime suddenly slowed. And a part of its body was burned away by Felice.
However, its mass was enormous to begin with—losing a portion didn’t seem to hurt it much.
The enemy backed off, slowed down, and stopped. Then it sluggishly moved and stopped again.
“‘Sleep’ worked!”
Zain sprang out from the cliff wall like a launched arrow. They struck not with their fist, but with their palm in a straight punch motion.
Nearly half of the Mother Slime’s body was blown away. And the impact blasted water behind it.
“*Hah… hah…* Dance, wind—swirl, air—*cough cough*—gather and spiral—crush and pierce—answer my will and strike my enemy—Wind Blast!!”
A raging gust shot out from Avril.
The direct hit shattered the Mother Slime’s body. It exposed the core stone, large enough to hold in both hands.
Its body extended tentacles from the cross-section. It was trying to reclaim the core.
“—Flame Slash.”
Felice swung her sword down on the core.
The sword passed through it cleanly, It incinerated it without a trace.
“Bl00d! Give me bloooood!!”
“Thank you for the healing. But please, go treat Avril-san first.”
“I’m already healed. It was just a Cure, but it worked like a High Cure. I was surprised. Still getting shocked even now…”
Zain treated Felice.
That was tougher than expected.
It was partly because our attackers mainly used physical attacks, but even so—it took this long.
No—we should be glad we defeated it now.
If it had become a Demon King, this wouldn’t have been possible.
There’s a massive gap between “almost-Demon King” and “actual Demon King.”
The recovered Felice pulled out a sheet of paper.
“Let’s hurry to the surface. I won’t let Umbrella fall into the demon’s hands.”
“Everyone ready?”
The makeshift teleport was set.
All of them nodded to my question.
We held hands and teleported.

The massive horde rising from the depths kept climbing upward. It was swallowing objects and lifeforms like jelly squeezing through a narrow path.
It was like sentient mass.
Reaching the mid-levels, the horde split like roots. Each branch was seemingly guided by something as it headed for the upper levels.
Upon reaching the first floor of the underground dungeon, the horde flowed into the sewers, then into the water channels. I destroyed small boats and reached the surface.
Those that couldn’t enter the water channels found other paths through the sewers to ascend.
The town was trembling.
People stopped in their tracks. They were looking around in confusion.
The shaking grew stronger and fiercer—
It became so intense they could barely stand.
Then, bursting through the stone pavement, fountains of Slime shot skyward from underground.
One after another. Slime fountains pierced the paving stones and rose.
Those that entered the water channels crawled up into alleyways.
“Phew, lots of customers today too. I’m so happy. This is what I live for.”
“Good work. Opening our shop in Umbrella was definitely the right choice. Our older child said it’s a beautiful town. So I’m sure this one will love it too.”
“Papa’s gonna do his best.”
The man with the prosthetic right leg gently patted his wife’s stomach.
Suddenly, the shop shook.
Wondering what it was, the man stepped outside.
The shaking grew violent. The sign reading “Silver Boat” swayed.
“An earthquake?”
“Hey, what’s going on?”
People ran by, fleeing.
Beyond them, an endless horde of Slimes surged.
“Monsters! Run!”
“But… what about the shop?”
“We can open the shop again anytime. What matters is you and the kids. Go ahead and evacuate—I’ll get Assam.”
The man rushed back into the store, ran up the stairs, and picked up his crying son in the hallway.
Then he ran back outside.
Right after, a Slime burst from beneath and destroyed the store.
But the man didn’t look back—he ran toward where his wife was.
“Ahahahaha! Yes, this! This is the sight I’ve been waiting for! Enjoy it to the fullest! This is the pre-celebration, after all!!”
The blue-haired man laughed from above the town.
He spread bat-like wings and watched the carnage unfolding below.
“Protect the town! The enemy is Slimes!”
“Fireball!”
“Thunderbolt!”
“Wind Fang!”
The ones holding back the tide were the adventurers.
They fought with their lives to buy time for the townspeople to evacuate.
Even former adventurers picked up weapons and returned to the fight.
Guild staff set up a defense line in front of the guild hall and continued to support the adventurers.
Black smoke rose in multiple places.
The central city of Umbrella was nearing its end—at the hands of a demon.
