Two weeks had passed since I came to the village.
The old man who was a staff craftsman had steadily been doing his work. And it was all thanks to the daily delivery of alcohol.
And finally, the staff was completed.
“This is your new staff.”
“Oooh.”
It was completed earlier than expected.
The old man sitting across the table handed over a wooden box.
Quietly opening the lid, inside was a single milky white short staff.
Although it had no decorations and looked simple, it had a strange pressure that made one hesitate to touch it.
Resolving myself, I touched the staff and lifted it.
“A little heavy.”
“You’ll get used to it quickly. The weight balance is exactly the same as the previous staff.”
When I gave it a light swing, I was surprised how easily it could draw characters.
It clung to my fingers better than the previous staff. It was as if I had been using it for a long time.
The transmission of magic power was also fast.
With this, I’d be able to perform enchantments faster.
“Thank you for the amazing work. You really are the kingdom’s number one staff craftsman.”
“Took you long enough to notice. Ka-ka-ka.”
The old man laughed as he poured alcohol into a cup and gulped it down.
Beyond the window behind him, children were playing in the lake.
The old man turned around and said, “Guess I’ll go fishing too.” He relaxed after finishing his work.
I placed the freshly-made staff into the case at my waist and left the hut.
By the way, the payment had already been made.
I’m satisfied with the quality. But honestly, it was a painful expense.
“Sorry for asking you to watch over them.”
“It’s a request from Raku-cchi. And I get to drink while watching this peaceful scenery. So I’m enjoying it in my own way.”
The one tending the campfire in front of the hut was Nonon.
Out on the lake, Grannaughts was playing with the children in something called auto mode.
Fish that had been caught were roasting over the fire.
“You were hiding your real face because you didn’t want to be underestimated, right?”
“It’s weird, isn’t it? But for me, it was quite a desperate choice. You know, even adult dwarf women still look relatively childlike. Elder dwarves look even younger. And even when they’re over thirty, they’re mistaken for teenagers.”
“It’s common for impressions to be pulled by appearances.”
I picked up a fish and took a light bite.
The tender, crumbling meat and the perfect saltiness were delicious.
Out on the lake, Grannaughts was shooting water streams from both hands. The children and Kuroa were playing energetically. They didn’t even care that their wet clothes had become see-through.
Apparently, Kuroa wasn’t wearing any underwear. Her clothes clung tightly to her body.
I chewed on the fish meat.
“Can I move next to you?”
“Feel free.”
“Then I’ll take you up on that. Ehehe.”
Nonon stood up and sat down next to me.
My eyes naturally went to her firm lower half clad in spats.
She sat close enough to almost touch me. She was smiling cheerfully.
“I’ve always wanted to talk directly with Raku-cchi. Actually, you know, ‘Unknown’ isn’t my first party.”
“Well, of course, you probably had a former group or something.”
“Yeah. Back then, me and Grannaughts were treated horribly. We were forced to carry shields we didn’t even want, just to be a wall blocking attacks. Made to carry luggage and do chores, and only got half the reward. We had just left our hometown and didn’t know much about the world. Even so, we worked hard, thinking we were being valued.”
Her story continued.
“I happened to overhear them. They only saw me as a child who could control a moving puppet. They only saw me as a convenient wall. Maybe I was also wrong for not telling them I was an elder dwarf. But still, that was awful. So—I beat them to a pulp. I took back the remaining half of the money I was supposed to get and quit.”
“You’re strong.”
“After that, we wandered from town to town, without a new party. That’s when we arrived at Avantale. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much. I was half giving up. I thought it would be the same everywhere. I was thinking, if it doesn’t work here, I’ll go back to my hometown. And then, Raku-cchi had posted a recruitment flyer on the bulletin board.”
“That time, huh.”
“When I talked to you, you said, ‘That armor’s cool. You’ve got good taste.’ Ever since I left my hometown, no one ever complimented anything about Grannaughts. Everyone praised its durability or power. But no one paid attention to its design or function. But Raku-cchi noticed. I thought—you’re the one.”
I really did think it looked cool.
I didn’t expect the one who talked to me to show up for the interview that same day, though.
The conditions were within acceptable range. And more than anything, I just needed someone—anyone—so I decided on the spot.
I didn’t expect a gal to be inside it, though.
Not a “man among men,” but a “gal among men.”
“Do you like Unknown?”
“Yeah. I totally super love it.”
“I see, super love, huh.”
Nonon made a heart shape with her fingers.
Oops, looks like the water play is over.
Grannaughts and the kids are coming back.
“Did you have fun bathing in the water?”
“Lux, you should’ve joined us.”
“Just watching is enough for me.”
Kuroa returned with soaking clothes. She said that as she wrung out her hair.
Her clinging clothes highlighted her figure.
She still didn’t seem to have the habit of wearing underwear. And the wet clothes were see-through. They revealed her chest.
“Kuroa-chan, you’re see-through! Raku-cchi is looking at you with lecherous eyes!”
“Eek!? Lux, you perverted enchanter!”
Covering her chest, Kuroa ran into the shade of a tree.
Nonon grabbed a change of clothes and ran after her.
Perverted enchanter, huh…
Suddenly, I felt a sharp gaze.
Not just that, but intense killing intent stabbed into my skin.
However, there was no response in the magic net.
I quietly drew my staff. I was preparing for the moment the enemy might attack.
But there was no movement—the presence quietly vanished.
Apparently, they left the area.
“There’s something bad here, right?”
“You noticed?”
“Before being a technician, I’m a dwarf warrior.”
“It might still be nearby. Let’s withdraw quietly so we don’t provoke it.”
“Roger.”
We called the children back and returned to the village.
