Master was lying on the bed.
“I need to talk to Lux. Leave us alone.”
At Master’s words, Kusaya-san silently complied.
When he left the room, I muttered.
“I didn’t know you were that weak.”
“Of course you didn’t. I never told you.”
“If you had just said one word…”
“Even if I did, you couldn’t have done anything. In fact, I’ve lived longer than most would.”
Since the time I first came here, she had a chronic illness.
Except for sometimes looking in pain, there was nothing much wrong.
That’s why I convinced myself she was fine.
“Can’t it be cured with medicine?”
“The doctors and healers all said it was too late. And what’s that face? I’ve accepted it. It’s not like I’ll die right away. I still have regrets left, didn’t I tell you? Like worrying about what will become of the foolish disciple who broke his staff.”
Master smiled gently and said,
“Show me your true face.”
I peeled off my face. It revealed the one beneath.
Her fingers stroked my cheek.
Then suddenly, she pinched my cheek hard.
“Ow!”
“Don’t make such a gloomy face. Just looking at it makes me angry.”
“That’s cruel.”
She released my cheek and sat up. She then pulled out her short staff.
“Are you alright?”
“Don’t make a fuss over something like this. Now, I’ll teach you something special. I’ll only teach it once, so listen carefully.”
The tip of her staff shone brilliantly.

When nearly a month had passed,
Nonon and I were saying our goodbyes.
“I’ll come back to see you again. So make sure you’re alive.”
“I’m stubborn, you know. I’ll live another thirty years.”
“Knowing you, you might live fifty.”
“Haha, maybe so.”
In front of the house, Master’s black hair swayed in the wind. And she smiled warmly.
Beside her stood her husband, Kusaya-san.
Nonon was riding on Grannaughts’s shoulder. She also spoke up.
“It was the best countryside life ever. Thank God for today. Come visit Avantale anytime, we’ll welcome you!”
“I’ll look forward to it.”
“Yep!”
While they were talking, Kusaya-san put his arm around my shoulder and whispered secretly.
“Isn’t it time you told me? You’re dating her, right?”
“Huh?”
“From what I’ve seen, Nonon is perfect for marriage. She’s straightforward and honest. So? Are you two together?”
“We’re not like that. We’re just comrades, that’s all. I only found out recently that she was even a girl.”
“Hmm, so I misunderstood. I really thought you two were close.”
He looked thoughtful. He then suddenly snapped.
“Wait, don’t tell me you’re after Kuroa!? Well, that girl will definitely grow up into a real beauty.”
“I’m not after her! And you know I don’t get girls.”
“…Being unaware is scary.”
Hah? What’s that supposed to mean? Don’t ask like you already know.
“See ya, bye-bye!”
Nonon waved many times as we left.
When we exited the village, a carriage bound for Avantale was waiting.
Nonon and Grannaughts climbed aboard. They greeted the driver.
Grannaughts climbed in first. It shook the cart with its weight. It then exhaled steam like a sigh.
“Lux!”
“That’s Kuroa, isn’t it.”
Kuroa came running from the village.
She hugged me and headbutted me under the chin.
“Gueh.”
“Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving!? You always do this. Even four years ago you left without saying anything! I think of you like a real brother!”
“Sorry. I don’t like gloomy farewells.”
Come to think of it, I did leave without saying anything last time too. Completely forgot.
Even if I knew we’d meet again, farewells were painful. That’s why I liked coming and going casually.
“You *have* to come back again. If not, we’ll all go to Avantale. And you’ll pay for everything.”
“That’s terrifying. Seriously terrifying.”
I patted Kuroa’s head, and she narrowed her eyes happily.
I put my wish for her to stay well into the gesture.
The carriage started moving slowly.
“Take care!”
“See you.”
We waved until Kuroa was just a small figure.

By the window, a page was turned.
Someone spoke to Hilda, who was absorbed in reading in her rocking chair.
“Are you lonely? Now that he’s gone.”
“Not at all. I’m glad it’s finally quiet. He’s noisy as can be.”
“That’s just like you.”
“And you, how long will you keep that face on?”
“Ah, right. We promised to take it off when it’s just us. With Nonon there, I forgot.”
With a rip, Kusaya peeled off his face.
Beneath it, another face appeared—his ears were longer now. It made it obvious to anyone he was an elf.
“First a Demon King, and now an Archdemon with Baron rank. The kingdom has become dangerous.”
“I feel like something bad is moving in the shadows. Maybe coincidence, but that boy is at the center of it. You could only call it a strange fate.”
“He was born a hero. He attracts both bad and good, even without meaning to.”
“And the fact that he doesn’t mean to—that’s the biggest problem.”
Kusaya chuckled pleasantly.
Hilda closed her book with a snap, sighed softly, and felt a little lonely in her mouth.
“Sorry, but could you make some tea—huh? He’s already gone?”
When she turned, Kusaya was nowhere to be seen.
◇◇◇
The carriage bound for Avantale was caught in a storm.
Heavy raindrops battered down.
The dark sky rumbled with thunder that shook the body.
“Sir, we can’t go any further.”
“There’s a cave over there. Let’s take shelter until the storm passes.”
The swaying carriage raced through the forest and reached a rocky cave.
Inside, cool air flowed.
Grannaughts and I jumped down to check outside.
At the cave’s mouth, water poured like a waterfall. It splashed noisily.
Rain blew sideways with the fierce wind.
Lightning flashed and thunder boomed.
“Achoo!”
I shivered and sneezed.
My head felt hazy.
Nonon jumped out from Grannaughts. She pressed her hand to my forehead.
“You’re burning up! Mister, light a fire!”
“O-okay!”
The driver pulled hay and wood from the cart and struck sparks.
Meanwhile, my nose started dripping.
Huh? Did I catch a cold?
I hadn’t had one in years… maybe I relaxed too much back in the village.
“Lux, Mister, take off those wet clothes. Do you have blankets in your magic bag?”
“Uh, I think two. Achoo!”
“Which one… this must be it.”
She reached into my magic bag at my waist and pulled out blankets.
Then she stripped off my wet clothes and covered both me and the driver.
“You two rest. I’ll make something warm.”
Clothes dripped water.
The fire lit up the cave. It dried the clothes hanging on ropes.
The driver and I shivered under blankets.
Nonon was still dry from being inside Grannaughts. She worked quickly and without trouble.
My nose dripped again.
I found myself staring at Nonon’s butt wrapped tightly in her leggings.
Her body was well-balanced and toned. Yet it still had feminine curves.
Her line from back to hips was perfect.
If I cast ‘Beautiful Butt’ enchantment on that butt, it’d be even better.
Not only that—her modest chest too. If I added ‘Big B00bs’ enchantment, it’d be completely my type.
“Beautiful Butt Enchant! Beautiful Butt Enchant!”
I waved my staff at her butt.
But she snatched it away instantly.
“Stop fooling around and eat this, then sleep. There’s no Zain or doctor here. So you need to rest properly. Here, ahhh. Oh Mister, feed yourself.”
Nonon held a spoonful of bread porridge to my mouth.
My body felt heavy, my thoughts fuzzy.
Seeing her concerned face saying “ahhh” made me feel guilty. So I obeyed.
“Amm, tasty.”
“This might be worse than I thought. Your face is so red. Did we have fever medicine? Ugh, I should’ve kept Grannaughts’s insides better organized.”
*Munch, gulp.*
Sho good~..
