The Unmarried Omega Falls into Being a Wife - Chapter 16
Lin Xunye didn’t wait for Zhang Wangjiang’s reply but got Lin Youjia’s “lesson” instead.
“Xunye, how can you speak to Young Master Zhang like that? That’s extremely rude. Apologize,” Lin Youjia scolded deliberately, having arrived half an hour late just to enjoy everyone’s attention.
But he hadn’t expected Lin Xunye to be here too.
He was supposed to be the face of the Lin family. What right did a foolish brother who had “married out” have to show up?
Lin Xunye’s good mood shattered. He sat back down and resumed drinking his tea.
No one paid any attention to Lin Youjia, and the atmosphere instantly became awkward.
Lin Youjia’s face darkened, but everyone present was someone he couldn’t afford to offend.
Before coming, he had done background checks on everyone.
Even the seemingly ordinary Ge Yan was no average person. As long as he got close to her and relied on the Lin family’s years of foundation, Lin Youjia was confident he could win hosting rights this time.
His first goal was to win over Ge Yan.
But it wasn’t as easy as he imagined.
He picked up a gift box from his assistant and “casually” placed it next to Ge Yan’s seat. “Professor Ge, I’ve heard so much about you. It’s truly an honor to meet you today!”
Ge Yan gave a faint smile. “Pleasure to meet you.”
Then she turned her attention back to her tea.
The tea was brought by Gu Pei one sip and you could tell it was top quality black tea.
The conversation ended too quickly, and Lin Youjia was unwilling to give up. He continued, “I heard Professor Ge has many talented students. I wonder when I might have the chance to meet them? My brother could certainly learn from them cultivate himself a bit.”
Upon hearing that, Ge Yan looked at him.
“Your brother is…?”
Lin Youjia immediately said, “Lin Xunye, the one over there drinking tea.”
Lin Xunye, who was just randomly staring off, suddenly felt attacked.
He hadn’t been paying attention, but seeing Gu Pei’s faint smirk, he knew it couldn’t be anything good.
They were definitely badmouthing him.
Zhang Wangjiang had heard the whole thing and leaned over to tell Lin Xunye, but was pushed back by a hand. If he didn’t have good balance, he would’ve fallen.
Lin Xunye instinctively looked toward Gu Pei.
At that moment, Gu Pei was extremely close to him one step closer and they’d be kissing.
Gu Pei’s voice, low and pleasant, sounded in his ear: “Lin Youjia suggested you learn calligraphy from Professor Ge’s students. To cultivate yourself.”
Lin Xunye: What the actual.
The world’s upside down!!!
He was nearly about to explode.
He swore, he was going to get that family registry changed one day.
On the other side, Lin Youjia kept droning on. Ge Yan finally put down her teacup and cut him off in a soft but firm voice:
“I don’t agree with anything you’ve just said.”
“Why do you assume Xunye is a rude, useless troublemaker?”
“Have you ever really taken the time to understand him?”
Three sentences, and Lin Youjia was speechless.
He tried to defend himself, stuttering, only to awkwardly mutter, “He… he’s always been like that since he was a kid…”
Gu Pei’s brow furrowed. Lin Xunye was about to go punch Lin Youjia again when he heard Gu Pei say:
“People with dirty hearts see filth in everything.”
Lin Xunye paused, raised an eyebrow, then coolly leaned back in his seat.
If it weren’t for the occasion, he would’ve asked Gu Pei if his heart was made of stone how else could his mouth be so savage?
Lin Youjia had already taken a beating from Lin Xunye outside and now got verbally destroyed by both of them inside. His string of misfortunes left his expression sour.
Lin Xunye shook his head. After silently lamenting his brother’s pathetic cowardice, he downed his tea in one gulp and gave Gu Pei a thumbs up when he noticed his gaze.
Mouthing: “You’re actually useful for once.”
Gu Pei’s brows and eyes subtly curved in a smile barely noticeable, but Lin Xunye saw it.
So he’s not a cold-blooded robot after all.
Interesting.
After getting schooled, Lin Youjia stayed quiet for half an hour.
Lin Xunye didn’t idle either he pulled out his phone and started browsing for new earrings.
Lately, his luck had been awful. Always running into Lin Youjia.
He figured he needed to buy something auspicious to turn his luck around.
As he tapped away on his phone, Gu Pei leaned over and spotted what was typed in the search bar: “Lucky earrings.”
The first result that popped up was a Buddha-shaped earring.
Gu Pei imagined Lin Xunye this rebellious red-haired youth with a Buddha dangling from his ear. Like a divine being tainted by worldly desires and dragged down into the mortal realm.
Gu Pei swallowed. His fingers, once resting on his leg, moved to the chair, and he unconsciously rubbed his palm against the armrest.
Not bad, actually.
But Lin Xunye wasn’t interested in that one.
He scrolled down and found something truly tacky looking. His eyes lit up.
Moments later, Gu Pei saw him place an order for an earring engraved with:
“Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.”
Gu Pei turned away, chuckling softly.
Lin Xunye remained blissfully unaware.
The planned dinner got pushed back to 8 p.m. The guests had encountered a car pile-up on the only direct road, which was now completely blocked. They had to take a detour. Fortunately, their vehicle was far from the crash site and unharmed.
When the news came, the first to complain wasn’t Lin Youjia he’d already been roasted a few times and had no energy to protest.
But those sharp-yet-dumb eyes of his irritated Lin Xunye. Especially the way Lin Youjia kept staring at him he really wanted to go beat him up again.
But he couldn’t.
Leaning back in his chair, Lin Xunye swept his eyes across the room. Professor Ge and Gu Pei were happily discussing details. He didn’t want to spoil the mood.
Just as he was about to look away, he met Lin Youjia’s gaze.
The open disgust in his eyes only added to Lin Xunye’s irritation.
“Excuse me, I’m going to the restroom,” Lin Xunye said and walked out.
But he didn’t go to the restroom. He headed into the hotel lobby and began admiring the calligraphy hanging on the walls.
He’d noticed them upon arrival many were pieces he’d practiced copying in the past.
After looking through all of them, he returned to the first one.
It was just four simple characters, but the brushwork and transitions between strokes showed profound skill.
He had a good guess who made it. Sure enough, in the lower-left corner was the name he expected Shi Congwen.
Shi Congwen and Ge Yan had studied under the same master, but their styles were very different.
Shi preferred roundness and fullness, often producing adorable-looking characters.
Ge Yan favored sharp strokes. Her writing was bold and powerful. Lin Xunye shared a similar style but with a casual flair others couldn’t mimic.
Ge Yan often praised him as a student already ready to “graduate.”
But the Lin family still clung to their old image of him assuming he spent his years abroad playing around and embarrassing the family.
Lin Xunye didn’t care one bit what they thought.
They were just strangers who happened to share his bl00d.
After staying in the lobby for a while, Lin Xunye got bored and headed outside.
The night air was warm against his face.
He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out a cigarette, sticking it between his lips. He didn’t smoke, but felt like pretending for a bit.
“Excuse me…”
A white blur ran toward him.
The person reached him, out of breath, and was about to fall over. Lin Xunye caught them in time.
“What is it?” he asked, pulling the cigarette out of his mouth bad taste, not doing that again.
“Do you know where Gu Pei President Gu is? I’m a new assistant. Haven’t gotten his personal number yet and I can’t find him.”
Lin Xunye’s initial urge to help suddenly vanished. He shoved his hands into his pockets and replied vaguely, “No idea. Might not be here.”
The assistant looked like they were about to cry.
Seeing this, Lin Xunye sighed and asked, “Do you need to give him something?”
The assistant nodded, eyes lighting up. “Wait a sec!”
Two minutes later, a bouquet of sunflowers was shoved in Lin Xunye’s face.
“You’re going to confess to him?” he asked.
Cheating while married? Divorce tomorrow.
He hadn’t even started investigating yet, and here was the perfect excuse to end this marriage right away.
But when he saw the assistant’s face turn beet red, he unexpectedly felt annoyed.
He grabbed the bouquet. “Alright, I’ll pass it to him for you.”
Then he stormed back inside, fast enough that the assistant couldn’t keep up.
She chased him all the way to the private room door, but Lin Xunye slipped in and shut the door tight.
She was a newly graduated assistant. First day on the job, and she’d run into someone as scary-looking as Lin Xunye. She didn’t know whether she should follow him inside.
When Lin Xunye walked back into the room with the bouquet in hand, Gu Pei and Ge Yan had finished chatting.
Lin Youjia had moved to a corner. Unless you were looking for him, you wouldn’t even notice.
Gu Pei noticed Lin Xunye right away but his gaze landed on the flowers, and his posture immediately straightened.
In Lin Xunye’s eyes, that was a confession.
He didn’t think he had feelings for Gu Pei. But they’d only been married for a couple of days, and the guy was already getting wooed? That ticked him off.
“These are for you,” Lin Xunye said and threw the bouquet at Gu Pei.
Gu Pei caught them, checked the freshness, then tried handing them back.
Lin Xunye leaned back with crossed arms. “What, you want my blessing now?”
Bless your new love already? That fast?
Gu Pei had no clue why he was so mad. He pulled the card from the flowers and placed it somewhere visible.
Lin Xunye frowned and glanced over at him. At Gu Pei’s urging look, he glanced down.
On the card, written neatly:
“For someone important Gu Pei.”
Lin Xunye scowled.
Was this how people confessed now?
Then, suddenly, a terrifying thought hit him. He looked up at Gu Pei.
Gu Pei’s calm, open expression hit him like a jolt of electricity.
Leaning back with arms draped on the chair, his glands pulsed slightly.
A terrifying realization struck him
What if… the flowers were meant for him all along?
