- Chapter 23 - Is Gu Peiren Really That Good?
The lounge was still empty, just like before only now there was a set of clothes placed neatly by the bed. It must have been the set Gu Pei had mentioned.
Lin Xunye picked them up and immediately felt more at ease.
The clothes were perfectly normal not women’s clothing, nor anything revealing. He was quite satisfied.
Once he was fully dressed, Lin Xunye frowned as he looked at the cufflinks.
The sapphire cufflinks reminded him of Gu Pei’s eyes. He didn’t really want to wear them.
But the cufflinks were objectively beautiful. He had no reason not to wear them.
After some internal struggle, Lin Xunye put them on.
He pushed open the lounge door. No one was outside.
His head throbbed for a moment, and he walked straight out of the office.
Outside the office stood a man. When he saw Lin Xunye coming out, he stepped forward, “Young Master, I’m President Gu’s assistant. The President had to step out briefly and asked me to take you to the car to wait for him.”
Lin Xunye was confused about why everyone around Gu Pei kept calling him “Young Master.” As he followed the assistant down to the parking lot, he looked around to make sure Gu Pei wasn’t around before asking, “Why do all of you call me Young Master?”
The assistant opened the car door for the back seat. “That was President Gu’s instruction. He also said that if you prefer a different form of address, you can let us know. We’ll change it once he approves.”
Hearing how much trouble that would be, Lin Xunye gave up on the idea of making them call him by his full name.
He waited in the car for half an hour before the opposite car door opened.
Gu Pei got in with a blank expression and slammed the door shut.
Lin Xunye was playing on his phone. Seeing this, he texted Xu Qian.
[Lin Xunye]: I think what you said about Gu Pei being moody is pretty accurate.
[Xu Qian]: Right? I heard he even hangs people up and beats them.
Lin Xunye found that part hard to believe.
Gu Pei looked like a gentleman. He didn’t seem like the kind who would tie someone up to beat them. If anything, Lin Xunye imagined that if Gu Pei wanted to fight, he’d probably just kick someone down in one move rather than waste time tying them up.
“Playing games?” Gu Pei’s voice pulled Lin Xunye out of his thoughts.
Lin Xunye turned off the screen. “No, just chatting.”
Gu Pei didn’t respond, and silence settled again.
As the car started moving, Lin Xunye closed his eyes.
The entire ride, he had just one thought this driver was nowhere near as good as Gu Pei.
By the time they arrived at the destination an hour later Lin Xunye was feeling nauseous.
Especially during the sudden stop the jolt made him almost lose it.
Before getting out of the car, Lin Xunye glanced several times at the driver, as if silently condemning him.
Is Gu Pei really that good?
Seems like Gu Corporation’s recruitment process is pretty lax. Maybe when he wants to try out another career path, he’ll apply at Gu Corp himself.
The nausea hit again, and Lin Xunye quickly got out to get some fresh air.
Inside the car.
The driver was sweating nervously and cautiously asked, “President Gu, was my driving okay?”
Gu Pei remained expressionless, then sighed. “No need to do that next time. If I say something that might make Mr. Lin uncomfortable, you don’t need to follow through.”
The driver nodded repeatedly.
Truthfully, he regretted not taking a day off today.
The more uncomfortable Lin Xunye looked, the darker Gu Pei’s expression became. By the end, the driver felt like dying right then and there.
Gu Pei said, “Assistant Lin is here too. You’ll ride back with him. I’ll let him know.”
Gu Pei got out of the car and walked over to where Lin Xunye was getting some air in the distance.
He regretted it.
Lin Xunye just didn’t have feelings for him. His words might’ve been a bit harsh—but that didn’t justify making Lin Xunye uncomfortable. It hurt him too, seeing that.
He was such a jerk.
Lin Xunye stood with one hand on his hip and the other fanning himself.
After a few breaths of fresh air, he felt much better. As Gu Pei approached, Lin Xunye spoke first, “Are we going in now, President Gu?”
He smiled while calling him that, still fanning himself.
The sapphire cufflinks sparkled in the light, moving with Lin Xunye’s gestures like part of a painting reflected in Gu Pei’s deep blue eyes.
Gu Pei felt a bit better and stepped forward to take Lin Xunye’s hand. “Let’s go in.”
Lin Xunye raised an eyebrow and shook their joined hands. “Do you shake hands with all your assistants?”
Gu Pei understood what he meant. They stared at each other for two seconds, then Gu Pei let go and stepped into the banquet hall ahead of Lin Xunye.
As soon as Lin Xunye, with his eye-catching red hair, walked into the banquet hall, he attracted a lot of attention.
Gu Pei seemed to sense this and swept a cold gaze across the crowd.
His deep blue eyes held no warmth, making the onlookers shiver.
As Lin Xunye walked further in, a few sharp-eyed guests noticed something: not only was his outfit similar in style to Gu Pei’s, but even the cufflinks on his wrist matched the color of Gu Pei’s eyes.
Meanwhile, Gu Pei wore ruby cufflinks matching Lin Xunye’s hair color exactly.
The entire room instantly understood their relationship. After all, no one would dress exactly like their boss especially wearing such expensive cufflinks if they were just an assistant.
People quickly came up to Gu Pei to chat, full of subtle probing about Lin Xunye’s identity.
After going abroad, Lin Xunye hadn’t attended many of these events and he never came to them before he left.
Back then, Lin Gaoyuan only ever brought Lin Youjia to these functions, introducing him to networks and resources. Lin Xunye? He wasn’t even told about them.
In Lin Gaoyuan’s eyes, Lin Xunye should’ve just stayed quietly at home only that would make him satisfied.
But Lin Xunye wouldn’t be controlled by others.
Most people at the event didn’t know Lin Xunye. A few who remembered him only did so because they were friends with Xu Qian or Li Ye.
Plenty came to dig for gossip, but Gu Pei didn’t greet them with his usual coldness. Instead, he clinked glasses and calmly introduced Lin Xunye as his “younger brother from the family.”
That pissed Lin Xunye off.
He was older than Gu Pei he should be the older brother.
Finally catching Gu Pei during a quiet moment, Lin Xunye dragged him to a corner.
He took a bite of cake and said after chewing, “I’m the older brother. You’re the younger one. If I hear you lie again, I’ll tell everyone you snore, grind your teeth, and sleepwalk!”
Gu Pei sipped his wine, took a piece of cake Lin Xunye had eaten from, and placed it on his own plate. “You haven’t slept with me. How would you know if I really do those things?”
Lin Xunye choked on his boldness. He downed his drink and glared at Gu Pei, expression fierce but still cute. “Because I said so.”
Gu Pei: “Okay.”
Lin Xunye was stunned.
Why was Gu Pei suddenly so agreeable?
Before he could dwell on it, Yu Ji walked over with a drink.
“Gu-ge, Young Master Lin,” Yu Ji greeted.
Lin Xunye frowned slightly. Then Gu Pei said, “Don’t call him Young Master Lin.”
Yu Ji: “…”
“Then should I call him… sister in law?”
Lin Xunye immediately flared up, ears turning bright red. He tried to argue but ended up stomping off with his plate.
As expected Alphas were all bad news.
Two Alphas together? Double trouble.
“Sister-in-law got shy?” Yu Ji leaned in, teasing.
Gu Pei shot him a glance. “Ease up. If you push him too far, he’ll really hit you.”
Yu Ji: “Then you better save me. He looks like the type to hit hard. My back can’t handle it.”
Gu Pei finished his drink. But in his mind, he was recalling Lin Xunye’s heat how he carried him to the bathroom, their bodies marked with scratches and bite marks under the light of the mirror.
They followed Lin Xunye at a distance.
Gu Pei flagged down a passing server and took another drink, then stood in a hidden corner, watching Lin Xunye’s back.
Yu Ji clinked his glass and whispered near Gu Pei’s ear, “You seriously into that Omega who’s fiercer than most Alphas?”
Gu Pei stayed calm and downed the entire glass. “Just an Omega. I know my limits.”
Yu Ji: Liar.
“Bro?”
Xu Qian waved a hand in front of Lin Xunye’s face. Lin snapped out of it, no longer distracted by the burning gaze on his back, and continued eating cake.
“Did you even hear me? I think I found the one!”
“You found the one again?”
Lin Xunye finished his cake, pulled out his phone, and showed Xu Qian a picture. “In the past six months, you’ve met five soulmates, six first loves, eight destined partners, and eleven love at first sights. And you almost had deeper connections with four of those Alphas because of your misjudgment.”
“Did I get the numbers right?”
Xu Qian was visibly discouraged. But Lin Xunye wasn’t done. He tapped the screen again. “This idiot right here does he look familiar?”
Xu Qian: “…”
“You’re too mean, bro!” Xu Qian pouted, but quickly brightened. “But this time’s different! We’ve known each other for days. He said he’s a vanilla-scented Omega, and I’m a fruity Alpha we’re a perfect match!”
Lin Xunye: “…”
Perfect match ×1
Lin Xunye knew reasoning wouldn’t work. Xu Qian would only learn from experience.
But he overlooked one thing: Xu Qian had already learned from over a decade of bad experiences and still didn’t change.
Lin Xunye didn’t know many people at the banquet. He sat in a corner listening to Xu Qian babble about sparks of romance until a woman suddenly sat down across from them.
She looked vaguely familiar, but Lin Xunye couldn’t place her.
He focused on his dessert, clearly uninterested in talking. Xu Qian ignored her too.
Just as Xu Qian was getting to the dramatic part of his story, the woman interrupted: “Young Master Lin, I’ve been watching you for a while.”
Lin Xunye paused with his fork mid-air. He immediately guessed where she had learned about him.
“Xu Qian, let’s go.” Lin Xunye picked up his dessert and stood. But before he could move, the woman stepped in front of him and said in a loud voice, “Don’t you want to know Gu Pei’s secrets?”
Lin Xunye’s voice turned cold. “No.”
The woman hesitated, then added, “What about his bed partners?”
“Not interested.”
“His blind dates from the past year, maybe?” The woman seemed desperate, grabbing his sleeve. “Please, just let me tell you one!”
Lin Xunye was mildly curious about Gu Pei’s past blind dates.
He wanted to know what kind of trauma led Gu Pei to choose him as a husband.
But before agreeing, Lin Xunye asked her one question:
“Does Lin Youjia hit you often?”
